Ibiza 2015

June 30- July 17

I'm dreading the comedown already. I'm thinking I'll only do pills on Thursdays as it's the only popular trance night with ASOT and Cream.

Also, what's with the endless techno nights? Has Ibiza always been packed with techno? I'd still take an edm night over a techno one, I find the edm crowds way more fun. Cocoon and Enter were my least favourite parties, I don't understand the need for all of those people in the dj booth? Then again, techno does seem to attract all the elitist. :D =D

Ibiza has been about the underground forever.

If you'd rather take an EDM night over the likes of Sven Vath, Richie, Solomun, Jamie Jones, etc.....then that tells us enough about you, lmao.

Where abouts in Majorca are you going? Was there a few years back. Stayed in Palma, which is quite nice but not jumping nightlife wise. Went into Shagaluf a couple of nights. Saw TEED/Fatboy Slim at Majorca Rocks (which was good). Outside of Majorca Rocks, Magaluf is a pretty scary place - probably as many really pissed people in one place as I've ever seen. If you're trying to get laid, it should be easy and, yeah, there were definitely drugs about too.

We are sailing from Barcelona so will likely dock in Palma. We only have a couple of days, some of which is already filled with engagements.

Magaluf looks as appealing as a sick on a footpath. I was hoping to find a DJ near the beach and a friendly Moroccan or two

A genre of music doesn't define who I am, but funnily enough techno elitists seem to think so. Musical preference is a subjective thing, so it is kind of pointless arguing over it, but I really have grown tired of constantly listening to techno elitist criticise every genre of electronic music out there. Believe it or not, but a lot of people think techno and tech-house sound repetitive, mechanical, lifeless and devoid of any emotion. It never goes anywhere, no euphoria. I feel it's better suited to a Berlin basement or even an elevator somewhere. Hawtin and Sven Vath come from industrial cities as well, and I think their music reflects this, so I don't see how their sound can be synonymous with the Ibiza sound. I would quicker associate something like Beachball by Nalin & Kate with the Ibiza sound than anything ever produced by Sven Vath, Hawtin etc.

I also don't see anything underground about techno to be honest. Enter and Cocoon have had more things in common with the mainstream clubs I've been to than what something like Cream has. Now Cream has more of an underground feel for me, banging tracks, friendly faces, hugs all round, jaws swinging and hands reaching for the lasers. Anyone new to the scene that wanted to blend in and just stand there lifeless would find Enter much more comfortable. I also can't understand the need for people being in the dj booth, seems like an elitist thing to do. Even on MDMA I still could not enjoy the crowd at ENTER or Cocoon.

This is the biggest load of shit I have ever read and I can tell you are seriously out of touch. You are either 18 and clueless or 40 and trying to hold onto 90's trance. When I say "underground" I mean the more non-commercial sounds that are techno, tech house and deep house. I could even lump in real trance to that group, but you won't hear that on the island.....especially not at Cream. It's funny you say those genres lack emotion when the current hot trend within the "underground" scene is all about emotion....might want to get up to speed. The repetitive argument could be made for just about every genre, but it's especially true with the EDM Trouse that you love so dearly. Talk about a genre using the same synths, kicks and formula for so long it's become a joke of itself.

I'm not sure what sound belongs to Ibiza, but you are much more likely hearing "Beachball" type tunes at Enter, Cocoon, Solomun, Paradise, etc. than while seeing Calvin Harris at Cream. I can guarantee that. There is a lot more than Berghain techno at Enter.

If you think Cream has an underground vibe you are clearly off your rocker. As for people behind the dj booth, sometimes it can be a bit ridiculous, but it's about the vibe and connecting the dj booth with the crowd. You sure are concerned about elitists a bunch...insecure much?

It just doesn't feel like an underground sound to me, most of it just sounds really safe. I do want to get into a new genre so I would love to hear some examples that have some emotions, but I can't find any. I mean sometimes the music threatens to go somewhere but it always returns to the same boring place. Luckily trance came along and completed the evolution. :D =D

As for Cream, I was talking about the trance room. Apart from the Above and Beyond nights I can assure you that no trouse was being played in the main room on the proper trance nights. The trance in there was banging, and I did hear a ton of classics. Paul Van Dyk took me on a journey full of emotion and euphoria whilst Sven Vath made me feel like I was trapped in an elevator for hours on end. I still remember the moment Take Me Away (no vocals) came on in the main room and the place erupted! I just don't see how any tech-house song could ever move an entire room like that. I didn't see anything at ENTER or Cocoon that came even close. I don't particularly like big room house either but at least the crowd is friendlier and more energetic/ enthusiastic. This quote from Laidback Luke sums it up well for me and why I would still choose someone like Hardwell over Hawtin.

"It absolutely is. It's about the rage. It's about the rave. Don't forget, we raved as kids too. For me it started with the UK rave sound in the early 90s, evolving into the harder dancey stuff from Germany to the Dutch Gabber, even. We've all been teenagers ready to rock the fuck out. When you become older, it's all of the sudden not cool anymore and then it seems you'll need to party like you're a sophisticated old person, tasting wine. I still like jumping, sweating and losing myself, to be honest. I'll do the relaxing when I'm not partying. Wait, wasn't it always about the party anyway? What happened to actually partying at a party and just having fun?"

If you want non-pretentious banging, 'proper' techno, try Carl Cox. He's playing at fabric in April if you want a tester. Totally different to Hawtin

If I'm sitting in a club debating the merits of different music genres, I'd starting questioning if my drugs are shit. Under the right influence I'd likely dance to two tin cans being tapped together

It's the total opposite for me. It's more about the music than the drugs. I could survive all night on just a couple of cans of red bull, if the tunes are spot on and the club and crowd are right. The drugs just complement it...that's the way it should be. I can't handle being in a club full of people who are just there to get fucked and don't appreciate the tunes.

I'll be out of London at that time but I do plan on seeing him at Space this summer with a mate that's a big fan. I did go to Enter amd Cocoon with an open mind but I just didn't like what I found. I also started listening to a bit of techno before my last Ibiza trip but after Enter I haven't touched it since. Maybe I shouldn't give up on it so soon, Cox could be the answer haha.

I don't like Hawtin or Sven either mate. Coxy on the other hand is proper bangin, old school style techno. Nothing pretentious about his music at all

Probably the same way I feel about dudes chin stroking on the dance floor, jizzing themselves about a dude pushing buttons and changing CD's

Not sure who you saw at Enter, but they had a steady rotation of Maceo Plex, Dixon, Tale of Us, Mano Le Tough, etc. I don't love Richie's sets too much recently, but I don't know how anyone couldn't get into his supporting cast. Top notch stuff.

I've been watching some of his Space videos and it does look pretty good, I could see myself having fun there.

I went a week after the opening party. I was rolling my face off at Armin Van Buuren before it, and Armin was playing a ripper set and the last hour was all harder stuff and classics, so everything after it was always going to a downer for me. It was Calvin Harris and Above and Beyond at Cream that night so Enter made sense. I checked out most rooms but I was just wasn't feeling it at all.

When I went to Cocoon it was the emptiest I've ever seen Amnesia which doesn't help. I think this year I'll give Carl Cox a go this July and see how I go. Sorry for coming across as such a dick before as well, but I forged all of those opinions on the back of an Ibiza bender haha. My emotions were all over the place to say the least.

Its a pretty unpopular opinion but I gotta say I 100% agree with this. That Berlin style of techno really is everywhere on Ibiza, its not remotely 'underground' like the elitists would have you believe. I've never gotten the 'MY MUSIC IS BETTER THAN YOURS' techno-elitist arguments. Surely on an island with as many clubs and nights as Ibiza there's room for every genre of music that has enough fans. Why judge someone else's taste in music if it makes them happy?

Music is art, it's appreciation is entirely subjective. If one genre of music makes you happy then that music is 'good music' for you.

The American "EDM" style isn't perfect, it can get very pop-y. But it at least its a bit more uplifting and similar to older school trance than the omnipresent techno on the island. I'm actually sort of hoping one of the major venues has an EDM night this year, just for a change.

I couldn't agree more with you brother!!! Fingers crossed we see some new stuff this year.

Truest words on this thread. I'm kind of with chojek - trance has always been my first love (at least as far as clubbing is concerned), and I've never been fully able to get into techno, but almost any variety of house can do it for me. I went to Be at Amnesia last year and spent an hour thinking "I can hardly bear to listen to this, never mind dance to it", but then the pills kicked in and boom, that was me leaping around like a lunatic till 7am. Clubland was ridiculed by almost everyone when it had a 3/4 year spell at Es Paradis but I went every year and had an amazing time.

For me though nothing can blow a room away like real trance played loud. Has an extra dimension that other types of dance music don't. IMO.
