To my shame both my parents speak good German, for obscure reasons but I barely know a word, I could just cheat with Google translate in which caseL-

To be fair mein liebchen I only know broken German. I lived in Germany for 3 years but was sheltered by an English speaking community so I only know bits and bobs. Shameful really seeing as I was in their country. I knew enough to get me by. Even when I tried that was better than being ignorant and they were very nice about me trying.

Its weird though isn't it how when we go abroad we always kind of expect the locals to speak english rather than us learning their language. It probably stems from school as languages don't start to be taught until late on in school and can be dropped when GCSE options are decided (or at least that was the case in my school all be it many moons ago!) :)
