Just got a call from my doctor regarding some blood-work I had, all came back perfectly healthy, except they said my b12 levels are extremely low.
they were pretty confused about all of this because i'm not a vegan, and i eat a balanced diet. in all other respects i'm perfectly well, aside from this b12 anemia. also i haven't used nitrous for several years. we are both very unsure about how this could have come about, has anyone else had this issue? if so, what caused it for you? i've had a problem with low-energy and general malaise for a couple of years now and i'll be seeing my doctor for further blood-tests next week, but id like to hear others stories.

Perhaps it is an absorption issue? Things like achlorydia, acid suppressing drugs or in more severe cases antibodies to intrinsic factor can cause improper absorbtion of b-12 from the diet regardlessof how much you take in.

just had a quick google of achlorydia and one of its symptoms is acid reflux, which i take omeprazole for. however i've only been taking omeprazole for about a month, could it have depleted my b12 levels that severely in such a small time frame?

One month is probably too short a time to make drastic drops but may have contributed if something else was going on.

Good find brink. Most of the studies I read looked at much longer time frames but conclusions were similar. Higher the dose of an acid reducer (either PPI or H2 antagonist) the lower the absorbtion of b-12. For what it is worth, they mostly concluded the longer the duration on acid suprresion therapy, the lower the levels of b-12.

If I have b12 deficiency from taking omeprazole for years on end, will b12 supplementation still work?

they couldn't find any absorption problems, or any other strange disorders. they assumed it was the omeprazole and now i'm taking supplements.

Are you sure this is the reason. B12 applies to a great diversity of malfunction, health conditions. It´s also recommended to be used even if your health is okay.
If you think or know you have a condition you will need more than that to be in equilibrium, so to speak.

I've read that certain intestinal bacteria actually manufacture vit. b-12. How is your intestinal flora? Maybe you need to get some good, raw probiotic (food)s in you.

Also, kiss lots of people to diversify bacteria ; )

Only times I've been b12 deficient is from years of DXM abuse and only about a month of heroin abuse. Just don't add any of that shit to the mix.

I had a B vitamin deficency. The dental hygenist pointed it out to me while cleaning my teeth before I saw the dentist.

I felt a great deal better after taking B 100 complex. Really just took a few days and my gums were much better.

Also my energy levels and skin improved with B vitamins.

My overall concescious is that drug use will deplete your B vitamins as most drug addicts I know have vitamin deficiencies. I am sure that is not the only reason, but I am pretty sure it is the reason in my case.
