Why do people glamorize drugs so much?

The here and now
Listening to any addict or watching any documentary will show you that drugs other than weed and psychedelics are bad. They turn normal people into prostitutes and sociopaths, causes them to lose their home and car and family. The drugs eventually stop working and addicts only take them to not feel like they're about to die. Their teeth fall out and their veins collapse and all that shit.

Yet a part of it just seems cool. The only drugs I've done that I'll openly talk about and advocate are weed, DMT, LSD, and psilocybin... but I gotta admit there's just something that seems cool about someone who does heroin and coke. For some reason when I was younger and dumber and a lot more depressed I just thought it would be so cool to move to the west coast and get in on the drug scene.. Black Tar Heroin is still my favorite documentary ever. I still think the drug scene is cool as fuck I just have a better understanding now on what to mess with and what to stay away from.

I think it has to do with counter-culture. It's illegal, forbidden, and frowned upon, which makes it seem all the more interesting.

It also has to do with the bigger pop-culture influences. Stars do drugs and party all of the time, and they're famous, rich and successful so 'how can drugs really be that negative'. Then, once you do a drug once or twice, and it feels amazing, you think that you can control it until one day you're being eaten alive by the drug that you once called your friend.

A lot of the addiction shows are reeeaaally played out, and the addicts there are over-dramatized. I'm not saying that addiction isn't bad, but there are plenty of functioning addicts who, while they only think about drugs, still do have their life kind of in order and can get out without having their lives entirely ruined.

Let's just knock it down to it being society's fault and call it a day.

Yeah, I think tv and movies try to project one extreme or the other when it comes to drug use/addiction...and like with most parts of life, reality is a lot more likely to be somewhere in between. I remember when i used to find coke and ecstasy extremely exciting...glamorous in a way, i guess. And I also remember spending years living hand to mouth and hustling every day to feed my opiate addiction-which was in no way glamorous, at all, lol.

Maybe its bc hard drug use is something larger society still doesn't really understand/criminalizes rather than treats. The flipside of that attitude is a tendency for media and outsiders to "glamorize" whatever is forbidden by law.

They are only glamorized by those who dont really do em

Just like most things that are glamorized, the truth is always falling short of the imagination/expectation and perpetuated by those who dont live it

Coke gets glamorized the most, probably because next to no one can afford a real binge on it, so its that chic party drug that shows up seldomly to make a random night memorable (maybe not for the right reasons)

People on message boards may express their love for certain drugs but thats far from glamourisation tbh

They can let you Learn A LOT About yourself..... Although Not EVERYTHING!

You said it right SirTophHam

To be a rockstar you have to bet the whole thing on making it.

90 percent fail. You made it because you did it and risked it and got lucky.

Hard drugs are the same. its risky, but you push it. Then some live.

The two fit we together, if we're talking about music of course. Spun three nights on tour and on camera you might need a "fix."

Money, advertising… cultural social conditioning. Check out Century of the self… Thrives on internal drives to promote drug use~

And OP, I can relate to the BTH documentry, use to watch it even before I did opiates, thought I would be the character Alice who had the red hair who said her friends read books by William S Burroughs, Jack Kerouac etc and go down to San Fran for the weekend...Well I was reading those exact same books(not saying reading them will turn you into a drug addict at all) and just always thought it would be great to take off travel and do a buncha uppers and opiates...Thought I had it under control with the opiates, but looking back I never did, use to call myself a weekend warrior but all I ever thought about was when was the weekend gonna get here and I was gonna get my Lortabs or whatever opiate they had...and still one of the only books besides Harry Potter I still have is Junky by William S. Burroughs...

Its just a cultural thing.
Well drugs are pretty awesome if you think about it, it's like the next step in the human evolution, being able to control your body chemistry like that is not an obvious thing to do so i guess there is a reason behind the cultural behavior (of course there's also the social media and money thing...)

If anyone glamorizes drugs, its because they were molded into that thought process because of the movies they see on TV about drugs.

We as humans have had our minds molded into thinking a specific way by what we watch......if you watch pornography several hours a day, you will want to have sex more often than someone not watching porn.

You want to see glamorization, watch "Cocaine Cowboys" about how wide open Miami was in the 80's.......we are bombarded with drugs & fashion, what's cool & what's not........

I never glamorized drugs & never will.........
