yo I have had REALLY bad anxiety for almost my whole life and my doctor wont prescribe me benzos cause im "to young" blah blah blah, anyway he prescribed me something called "Buspar" it is a "Azapirone" I know absolutly nothing about this, are they similar to SSRI's / SNRI's?? Antipsychotics?? I AM MORALLY AGAINST THOUGHS. bad long term effects?

and can I smoke pot on these? do the hold back effects like those I listed above or bring them out?? like snris? also what about psychedelics? LSD, mushrooms, etc. All help GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Taken from Wikipedia:

Buspirone (Buspar) functions as a serotonin 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist. It is this action that is thought to mediate its anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. Additionally, it functions as a dopamine D2, as well as α1, and α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist to a lesser degree, though these properties are generally undesirable in an anxiolytic and likely only contribute to side effects.

-------------------------------------

SSRIs are 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptor agonists and therefor are not similar in action to Buspar.

SNRIs are 5-HT and norepinehrine receptor agonists and are also not similar in action to Buspar.

Neuroleptics generally act as potent dopamine D2 receptor antagonists so yea there is a similarity to them because Buspar is also a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist (albeit not as potent as a neuroleptic).

You should be able to smoke weed.

LSD and Psilocybin Mushrooms as far as I know are potent 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptor agonists. Combining them with Buspar (which is also a 5-HT receptor agonist albeit partial) may cause serotonin syndrome which can kill you.

I haven't tried Buspar so I cannot tell you how well it works for anxiety and/or panic attacks. It's not a recreational drug though so if you're looking for a high unfortunately you're not gonna get it.

I suffer from Panic Disorder and have been on Xanax (Alprazolam) which is obviously a benzo for over 6 years. It's worked wonders for me but it's also caused my body to form a serious chemical dependency. They can also be very addictive for certain people. If I miss a dose or I run out, my body begins to convulse, I begin having delusions, spontaneous panic attacks and so forth. Not fun. Also, my short term memory recently has begun to really bug out on me and I'm certain that the fact that I've been taking Xannies for several years has contributed to this.

Buspar is definately a unique drug. Just a couple of things to note about this drug:

It has equal efficacy in helping with anxiety as SSRI's and Benzos.

As far as time it takes to kick in, it is sort of in the middle. Benzos kick in right away, while SSRI's may take up to 4-6 weeks to have an effect. Buspar is in the middle of these, taking up to 3-4 weeks to see the full effects.

There may be an increase in anxiety when you first start taking this medication, like you see with the SSRI/SNRI's. It just depends..

One thing to elaborate on with what ro4eva said, one of the metabolites of BuSpar is 1-PP, which is an alpha-2 antagonist. What this means is that it inhibits the body's natural way of decreasing the amount of norepinephrine in the synapse in the brain. Because of this, if you suffer from Panic Disorder or have panic attacks, it is not recommended that you take this medication because this may exacerbate the problem.

Serotonin syndrome is possible, but it is rarely seen when combining BuSpar with psychedelics. The reason being is BuSpar is a full agonist at presynaptic 5HT-1A receptors (which will actually decrease the amount of serotonin in the synapse) and its only a partial-agonist at postsynaptic 5HT-1A receptors.

Keep in mind that taking BuSpar with psychedelics may decrease the effects of the hallucinogen.. I know alot of people who take SSRI's and can't seem to trip, or need to take excessive doses to reach the level where they want to be at. I'm speculating you might run into the same problem with BuSpar.

SUMMARY:
BuSpar is something worth giving a shot. You get quicker results with fewer of the sexual side effects than with the SSRI/SSNRIs. You may need to be careful though, because taking this medication may increase your level of anxiety. Smoking weed on it should be fine, but it may diminish the effects of psychedelics. Best of luck to you and please PM me and keep me updated on how you're doing with this med or any others that you are taking for anxiety! :D

thanks to both of you it help tremendously. I think I'll give it a shot, but cap, yes I do have REALLY BAD panic attacks here and there it kinda just goes out of control and I cannot do anything till its over, last time i had to go to the hospital, Hionestly my doctor is a asshole, not just cause he wont give me benzos but he ust always has been, hes deffinatlly there strictly for money and not there to help anyone but him get his fancy car, i'v tries to switch doctors but my mom is crazy(literally) I am going to try it but the worst part of my anxiety is the anxiety/panic attacks, which is why i want benzos for them, but my doctor is an asshole like i said before, I hope this helps my anxiety attacks more than exacerbate them. Thanks all : ) ill keep u updated yo

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

Also, is your doctor aware that you smoke weed or do other street drugs?

I guess it wont hurt, I'm 16 years old, and no my doctor is not aware. But does that really matter? I'm taking the responsibility to find out for myself whether or not this is safe. I don't use drugs irresponsibly so I don't think it really matters.

Sorry if that came off kind of "assholeish" It was not my intention.

No problem. Considering that your doctor doesn't know anything, I'd say the main reason he doesn't wanna prescribe you benzos is because they're not indicated for anyone under 18 years of age. Although I know a 16 year old who's prescribed Klonopin (Clonazepam).

Have you tried any herbal supplements? Mainly Kava kava or Valerian?

The reason for that as you may know already, is that the drug company didn't want to spend $1,000's of dollars on a new clinical trial to prove their drugs safety and efficacy in kind under 18. This doesn't mean people under 18 shouldn't take benzos, it just means the prescribing doctor should be a little more careful when they prescribe these drugs. There are benzos approved for kids under the age of 18, but not the indication of panic disorder. It's usually for the benzos anticonvulsant activity. I also know quite a few doctors who prescribe benzos to children under 18, but for as needed usage. it is rare to see a Dr. prescribe a benzo for on a daily basis because of the risk/benefit factor of addiction. See if the doc will prescribe you any type of benzo for on an as needed basis for panic attacks, and not just for generalized anxiety. Trust me, it is a lifesaver to have a benzo with you wherever you go, as a little safety net. He really shouldn't have a problem with this.

Also, it is ur business whether to disclose ur extracurricular use of substances, but it is smart to check if they do have any interactions like your doing. I personally think that you would have no chance in hell getting a benzo script if u admitted ur doctor about ur drug use...ha But every doctor's different..

cap: yea I really agree with you lots, I think it honestly should have just been a closed case, "benzos here you go!" like really, I have some of the worst anxiety theyve ever seen, said multiple doctors I talked to when going to the hospital for anxiety attacks cause i stopped breathing! My doctor is litterally just a fucking dick! I'm trying to get switched to a different doctor, its just hard as fuck when I have to go through my guardian for it, and believe me, she could give a fuck less. I'm going through the imancipation proccess soon believe it or not (for personal reasons) and maybe ill get my own fucking doctor that I can talk to on the same level, instead of having my doctor take a superior fucking stance on everything and treat me like a lesser human being cause im fucking 16!!

sorry just lot's of anger about that as u can see, lol, but I mean really I want a doctor that can respect me as a human being not, "tolerate" me as a child.

I don't dispute that. I'm just quoting what the prescribing info says. If I was your doctor, I'd prescribe you Xanax because I know what you're going through because I suffer from the same thing and I went through 2 years of antipsychotics, SNRIs, SSRIs, TCAs and Trazodone and nothing worked.

same year i went through 6 years of SSRI's SNRI's antipsychotics, all sorts, u name it iv probaly been on it, but that was for deppression, I am 100% morally agaionst SSRI's and SNRI's and most espiccially antipsychotics. unfortunatly my doctor isnt you. lol

i was once Rx'ed Buspar for anxiety and it just made it much worse.

imo Buspar and drugs similar to it are complete bullshit, but thats just my thought.

god i hate that drug.

I have the same problem.
worst case of anxiety and panic attacks
but my doc wont prescribe me any Anxiety meds
also, if your doctor knew that you smoke weed.
hed most likely make yo do random drug tests
and if you showed up dirty you'd loose your meds
it sucks.
i suggest just going to a psychiatrist and getting you meds through them
its way easier.. and they give you much better drugs.

Everything works different for everyone. Sometimes it is trial and error. Taking drugs at such a young age could be setting off anxiety issues as well. I would go clean, see what is working and what isn't and try some herbal supplements. A small amount of Melatonin may work for anxiety, Gaba, Lemon Balm, L-Tyrosine ... it is all trial and error, but will definitely help.
I am also looking for alternative to benzo solutions. I am unique that my anxiety is also ADD, and not having a lot of help. Chamomile works great, but puts me to sleep ... Ativan was wonderful, but I don't want to get hooked on Benzo's.
Has anyone tried Phenibut? I have no idea what it is and how it works, but I've heard a few people mention it. Thanks for the input ;)

I wouldn't even waste time trying the buspar they are absolutely useless! I know a lot of people including myself that tried it out for a couple months and no relief at all. Have you tried clonidine NOT klonipin? Clonidine is used for high blood pressure, opiate withdrawl and anxiety. I was on 6mgs of klonipin a day for 5 years and switched to clonidine after tapering off the pins and it really works. The part that sucks is that it gives you bad constipation. You should talk to your dr and start at 0.2mgs three times a day you will feel it working your first day. hope this helps!!

I feel for you so much OP. doctors and Phyciatrists who dont have anxiety and panic issues cant fully relate to the struggle us people who do have it go through. im 22 and have been experiencing daily anxiety which affects daily life for about 3 solid years now. and its only gotten worse, yes i do abuse drugs but i originally started doing that because how much i realized it helped my anxiety. But i have kind of let it get outta control..thats a different matter though. i think if you are a responsible person who cares if youre 16? if a benzo would really help your horrible anxiety attacks and allow you to live a happy better functional life than thats what it takes. especially if all those lame SSRI's didnt help. the only downside is the addiction potential with benzos but i guess you give up something to gain something else. eh go figure..

If somehow you do get the benzos because it sounds like you need them... try not to take them everyday. Benz addiction and withdrawal suck and I wish I never took them except when needed, basically what we are all saying is addiction is not fun and your 16 so be careful
