How do e-cigs work?

Can someone explain to me the process of purchasing and using these?

Are they safer than tobacco?

Can you use them indoors or on a plane?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure HOW they work but I have many friends that use them. All I know is that you can change the flavors (the flavors come in cute little vials), they need to be charged (like a cell phone), and you can change the nicotine % to get as much nicotine as you want or none at all.

Not sure where you live but here in SoCal you can buy them legally in pretty much any tobacco shop as long as you're 18 or older.

I believe they're still too new to have the research done so I don't think there is an answer to this yet. I personally think they're worse than cigarettes, but that's just my opinion and I'm nothing remotely close to a professional.

That depends on where you live, I think. Here you used to be able to smoke them indoors for the first year or so but people started complaining, saying that just because they don't smell gross doesn't mean the 2nd hand smoke is any safer. You can still get away with it pretty easily in many places but do it at your own risk. I have no idea about smoking them in planes though. Maybe in the bathroom? People might think it's air freshener and think u just went to poop lol :P

What's your reasoning behind them being more harmful than cigarettes? Just curious. Being a former cigarette smoker I have to disagree with this completely. I feel much healthier now, and I have completely quit smoking. I barely even use my ecig these days! All those nasty fuckin chemicals in cigarettes make me cringe now.

Alrighty, enthusiast vaper here, so this may take a while.

How they work, well, although there are many different kinds of E cigs (cig-a-likes, pre built coil head tanks, rebuildables, rebuildable tanks, etc. etc.) It all comes down to "atomization" which is basically just resistance wire (kanthal A-1 in this case) wrapped up into a "coil" (essentially a spring thats been pushed together) and heated within specific boundaries in order to vaporize the juice rather than burn it.

You can pretty much order everything you need online at a bazillion different sites that are all pretty legit, it's pretty hard to stumble upon a trick site as long as you stay within the US.

They are generally regarded as being safer than cigarettes by the majority of scientists, there are many different studies that have shown the carcinogenic content found in vapor is exponentially lower than that found in cigarettes, comparable to most kinds of unavoidable pollution like car exhaust etc. Since so little is found in the vapor, second-hand smoke is also generally concluded to be much less harmful than that of cigarettes, although residual nicotine has been found in some studies, it is a very minimal amount, and with most beginner products, you will have absolutely no problem with any use indoors, even if you're trying to hide it!

Ehh, for planes I'd say no, you probably could take some puffs with and ghost them and get away with it, but anyone seeing anything resembling smoke on a plane (not to mention getting through security) would not be worth the risk in my opinion.

Ya, for me they've helped my abstain for tobacco products (smoked about a half a pack to a pack for a couple years) for about 8 months now, with one of the easiest withdrawal periods I've ever experienced being a former opiate abuser lol
If you're a smoker then I definitely recommend em' to ya, feel wayyyy better after like a week of using them, just all around more convenient because of indoor use and ease on the lungs.

First of all, congrats on quitting!! Idk how you did it, I don't think I can ever quit any of my addictions.. So major kudos to you, sir :)

And well.. Like I said, I could be very wrong.. I didn't do any research and I don't have any evidence to prove this. These are just my thoughts. Though I'll admit my opinion is pretty biased since I smoke nothing but Marlboro Reds and think any flavored smoke is gross lol but anyway, this is my rationale..

They say that menthol cigarettes are worse for your health than regular cigarettes.

They also say hookah is worse for you, pretty sure they say it's a lot worse..

Therefore I basically generalized it and came to the conclusion that all flavored smoke is worse than regular cigarettes. Those cute little vials for the e-cigs have nothing but synthetic stuff in them. Yeah cigarettes have rat poison and God knows how many other poisons.. But they're still not as bad as menthol cigarettes and hookah.

Idk, I might be stupid for thinking that but whatever :) To each their own, I suppose. I can't judge.

Oh cool, didn't know there were studies that proved that already. I guess I take back all that shit I talked about them, but I still think they taste gross lol

Hi.

I smoked a pack to 3 packs a day from 1982 to 2009. My own mother died of lung cancer due to smoking cigarettes. If there are two things in this world I am an expert at, its smoking cigarettes and smoking crack.

When you smoke a cigarette, it is literally no different than raking up the leaves in your yard, lighting them on fire, and standing over the smoke and inhaling it.

Can you imagine if you saw your neighbor doing that? Can you imagine watching him EVERY day for twenty years??? You would have gotten him committed long ago.

While smoking is socially nothing like it, its physically the exact same thing. Smoking leaves. Tobacco itself has loads of different chemicals in it. The tobacco companies have also through the years added in more. I think at one point there was over 400 different chemicals . Now there are much tighter restrictions on the industry but its still well over 100 carcinogens.

Anyways, when you have been smoking for years , it aint about nicotine withdrawl anymore. That is the easy part. A few days of withdrawl. The rest of the time (in my case a full year of being unemployable) was the severe damage I had done to my lungs. Not only was the pain agonizing , but there was so much 'tar' stuck to them I was unwittingly releasing more nicotine into my system as my body peeled off each layer of tar, which of course brought on more cravings.

I gained 40 pounds , which I have never been able to lose entirely. For a full year I was boned but it was worth it. I watched my wife smoke every day since and I have never had a smoke in almost 6 years.

How the e cig fits into my story is that when I quit smoking I went onto the 'patch' . I bargained with myself that I was so desperate to quit smoking that I did not care if I had to wear a patch for the rest of my life. Anything to save my lungs and eventual emphysema and lung cancer. So it wasnt even about the nicotine for me. It was smoking.

So this e cig comes around and I get one for my wife. I had done a lot of research into it and found that nicotine itself is not harmful for you in moderate doses. Its about as bad for you as caffeine is. Its all the tar and chemicals in cigarettes that cause the cancer.

The e cig has none of that. It has pure liquid nicotine, water and a form of vegetable oil which vaporizes the nicotine. That is it. So I tried it myself. I started 'vaping' them after 5 years of non smoking and I vaped my e cig for 8 months. Every day.

Then I quit. Cold. No patch. No gum. Thats it. Went through the 3 days of nicotine withdrawl and boom. Like I had never smoked. It was so far removed from my cigarette withdrawl I cant even describe the night and day difference.

Nobody will ever convince people to stop doing drugs. Not from antiquity to alcohol prohibition to the dumb war on drugs now. Humans will forever try to find a chemical to change the way they feel on demand.

My hope is all the kids coming up to become smokers choose this e cig instead. No more cancer. No more second hand smoke. The world will be better off.

Make the sale of tobacco ILLEGAL. Vape this instead.

Thank you, I feel very good about myself for doing so :) But I do have to stop you where you say "ecigs have nothing but synthetic stuff in them". Though it may be true that nicotine synthesized or extracted and put in a liquid is semi-synthetic, it's not really. The liquid itself? Not synthetic at all. VEGETABLE glycerin and propelyne(sp?) glycol and used in the liquid and I have yet to see anything bad coming from it. As for the flavors, some have natural flavorings and even the artificial ones can't be too harmful as I assume they use the same types of flavorings in juice for kids! Idk, maybe I'm the biased one :p

Yeah, reading the other comments I realized that apparently there are studies that show they're better for you haha and I had no idea what they were made of. But that's why I wanted to make it very clear that I didn't look any of this up.. I didn't want to make myself look stupid on top of my ignorance on this topic lol didn't want to make a bunch of false statements and insist that they're true when they're really not. I have no problem admitting I'm wrong and now I know the truth about them. Good to know even though I'm still stubborn and refuse to smoke them lol but now the only reason for that is because I'm very picky. I only like the flavor of Marlboro Reds. I have been told that there are regular cigarette flavored ones too but every time I have tried other cigarettes, I always go back to my reds.. Can't help it.

wow a lot of great information so far, thanks.

Can anyone compare the different kinds. Right now im looking and it seems theres blu ecigs, vape pens, and ones that actually look like a ciggarette?

I'd stay away from blu or the ones that resemble small/cigarette like pens, they're small and discreet, yea, however, you're better off with a starter type-vaporizer.. like the EVOD.

Reason I suggest you to stay away from those is because they generally don't have "great" quality (especially for their price compared to a 'real' vaporizer) and it seems like a vaporizer of good quality has a better experience (nicotine-wise and control-wise). You have more control over your unit, such as air intake, voltage.. may seem confusing at first.

Here an example of what I'd suggest for you to look into.. https://vaporhq.com/kanger-evod-starter-kit

The kanger evod kit is generally for starters, it's the LOW END of the GOOD products if you will.. Very reliable! It will outlast any ecig you buy that is roughly the length of a cigarette (typically) and you can exchange "e-liquid" with a huge variety of flavors and nicotine strength, which, in my opinion, is much cooler than buying "disposable inserts" like the blu-ecig has.

No MAOIs, only 1 alkaloid compared to many in tobacco (unless vaping WTA), no smoke.

I always thought of it like going from smoking opium to ingesting morphine pills.

Plus I like the refilables, since I used to vape my BTH when I was in a hurry & my coke HCL without freebasing it.

E-cigs do substitute quite nicely for traditional cigs if smoking as a behavior is more the point than effects. I got Green Smoke and the cartomizer/battery/case were all neat, but the effects were not quite the same as traditional cigs. Vapor products have pure nicotine with none of the drawbacks of regular tobacco, but tobacco has the full spectrum of alkaloids. If smoking is something to do than e-cigs are definitely the way to go, but they may not fully satiate the compulsion for cigarettes

What are the cons, I wonder.
It really seems like a good idea.
But does it satisfy?

Many people do notice a big difference satisfaction wise.
Biggest difference satisfaction wise I think would be the lack of MAOIs.

Some people say having the full spectrum of tobacco alkaloids makes a difference, but that can be compensated for by using WTA (whole tabacco alkaloid) oil.

For me, I didn't smoke a full cigarette until I was 26 (I shot heroin before I ever smoked a cigarette!) and still can't stand them and their smoke.
However, I do like the e-cigs. They don't make me cough and I like the flavors. (That's why I like mini-cigars too)

Obviously one shouldn't kid themselves into thinking that e-cigs aren't bad for you in some way, and more research is needed as well as proper education and regulation.

That said, my vape pen seems to be helping me some. I was about a pack-a-day smoker. I moved fully over to the vape pen, starting at the higher 18 mg concentration and coming down to the lowest (6mg) that I cut 50/50 with 0Mg (effectively making it 3mg). I'm using it less and less, and hope to be fully off nicotine in the not too distant future.

Anctedotally, I have noticed improvements in my breathing. I used to wake up and hack up a big 'ole mass of dark mucus. My smokers hack is almost gone.

I've also read that using lower voltage is better (as mentioned) and I do keep mine at it's minimum. I've also heard that if you purchase USP grade liquids, there isn't a worry about a lot of the contaminants (I wish I had a citation).

Overall, it's a trade offs vs cigarettes, and I hope we get more information quickly. The lack of carbon monoxide and tar seem to be real health benefits, but at what cost. Nictone is obviously bad regardless (hypertension), and putting anything in your lungs but air is going to be bad. The question is how bad.

How do e-cigs work?

Small coil made of wire with a wick/cotton through it gets heated up by a battery
The coil heats up the ejuice-soaked wick, vaporizing the juice
You inhale the vapor

Are they safer than tobacco?
Oh yeah. Whether they're harmless is yet to be determined but its my opinion that you'd have to be pretty dense to claim that ecigarettes are more dangerous for your health than analog cigarettes.

Can you use them indoors or on a plane?
Definitely not in a plane. I haven't been stopped yet for carrying my box mod in my carry-on (which wont last once they realize you can start fires with the coils) but rest assured if I were puff on the plane I'd have an air marshal up my ass before I could exhale.

MOST states dont have laws against using e-cigarettes indoors but it still all depends on whether the owner of the store allows it or not. I cant imagine restaurants, movie theaters, or department stores ever allowing it since the vapor has the potential to annoy, but a lot of bars and clubs will allow it and certainly ecigarette shops let you vape away in the shop.

If you end up buying one, get it online, not from a brick and mortar store. They'll probably charge 3 times what the hardware is worth.

I quit smoking 3 months ago and using an ecig made it so much easier, I couldn't believe it myself.
There are many different models to choose from and it can be pretty confusing at first. I would advise against buying disposable ecigs as they are a total waste of money.
I use a basic Ego battery and I'm satisfied with it, but you can get a better model if you have more money to spend.
I would suggest you go in a vape shop and compare different models before buying anything.

e-cigarettes don't produce smoke, they only make steam by vaporizing a liquid (which contains some flavourings and a specific amount of nicotine) with a heating-element. when you inhale the steam, nicotine is absorbed by the lungs like from normal cigarette smoke and you feel the nicotin-buzz. the great benefit from e-cigarettes is the harm-reduced way of consuming it, because the aqua steam does not contain toxic substances like tar or carbonmonoxide. and also you can purchase liquids without any nicotin to get rid of the addiction. I would recommend the e-smokes to every smoker!

side-note: a propper e-cigarette should be refillable and it should contain a rechargeable battery for the heating element, you can recharge it by pluggin it into your usb port.

They have had 10 years to 'evaluate' the e cig.

There is nothing wrong with the e cig. If there is something bad for you about it , its so miniscule they wont release the report. They are trying to plead ignorance of the non effects and just try to control it anyways.

Its liquid nicotine, water and vegetable oil. Its the same as going into a steam bath and inhaling that except there is nicotine in it.

When I smoke the e cig, I get no head rush. This is because I am not blocking the oxygen to my brain the way tobacco smoke does. The vapor is nowhere near as dense as the smoke. I do get a nicotine buzz though.

The e cig is going to eliminate lung cancer and emphysema along with several other maladies. The only thing I would change about the e cig is to lower the temperature it vapes at.

I would also change the name from e cig to 'nicotine inhaler' which is a much more accurate description. Its not a cigarette.

I just want to add that I vape. I smoked menthols for years and I feel so much healthier now!!! I'm going to eventually wean myself off the e-cigs as well but the ones I smoke have four levels: high nicotine, medium, low, and none. I'm going to pass through each level and then eventually just smoke the no nicotine ones just for the placebo effect and because it'll feel weird waiting for the bus without a cig in my hand. The ones I use are Smoking Vapor brand and I like them because they look like real cigs only in different colors so I can coordinate with my outfits, haha. They have a plethora of flavors and my favorites are piña colada and watermelon and strawberry. But they have ones that taste like real cigs or menthols too. They even have two different flavors each for those! Ones that are supposed to taste like Marlboro reds and two kinds of menthols too. I highly recommend them. Just google them and I think in Arizona you can buy them in stores. Happy vaping!!!
