Hi, I've been AWOL for a while. I won't explain why just that my life has been a clusterfuck. I need advice on what to ask for when I go in to pain management next week. I'm an opiate addict and I plan to tell them that but I need something for my back, I was thinking of asking for methadone since before this I've been using heroin for the pain. But someone said I should ask for suboxone but I thought only methadone was effective for pain not suboxone? Please let me know about this thanks.

aside from its better known role as an 'opiate-blocker' to help with addiction, suboxone is often prescribed for pain management in instances ranging from: serious cancer, neuropathic, even post-op pain. I have a friend who was prescribed it for his back pain who had very little experience with opiates, hope everything goes well for you.

Suboxone is not indicated for the relief of pain,it has said this with the info sheet that came from the pharmacy with every script of subs I've ever had.Going into just about any doctor and asking for a specific drug by name is a good way not to get it unless you've been prescribed it before and have medical records to back you up.Obviously don't mention H.Sometimes(usually)you have to take a script or 2 of something else and go back to the doctor and explain it just isn't working.Jump through the hoops.Careful not to wear it out though by asking for something better on every visit, you normally will be quickly flagged and sent home with a script of motrin.I'm under-treated as hell for my chronic pain but I just have to take what I can get and feel lucky I got even that. These days so many people have fucked it up for those of us who truly have chronic pain that it's a real bitch to get adequate treatment.Sorry to be the one to tell you this but that's how things have gotten.I'm truly sorry and I feel your pain.It sucks but what can you do.See what the doctor says and keep us posted.Based on the responses you get I or someone else can help you work out a plan of attack.PM me if you need advice, want to vent, have questions or whatever.I've been at this for many years ans I'm happy to help when I can.

downerhead

Forgot to mention this but unless you have recent opiate scripts do not mention being an addict, even if you walk in there sick as hell.Your high BP and sweating are also classic symptoms of pain so put it off on that.

I went through a similar experience and I´m taking methadone. Methadone works for pain.
It seems that a lot o people are taking subs and not methadone.
It may have to do with timing as mmt stays in your blood stream for a long time.
Up to 4 days approximately and you only take it once a day. Probably the routine with subs is similar. Idk.
Some will say that methadone has many side effects. I have dealt with all of mine, including taking other meds.
I have no experience with subs but can surely say that methadone has worked for me and I´m off drugs.
And have dealt with my pain issues quite well.

Bah, suboxone gives me killer migraines, I hate it, and does nothing for my pain.

Methadone helps some with my pain and cravings. I normally do a 20mg dose when tapering for a break. I have zero migraines on methadone.

Good luck at PM.

If your going in for pain management ask for strong pain killers. Don't ask for methadone or any drug by name. Ask for something strong and if that doesn't help go back and ask for something stronger. Suboxone isn't given for pain, temgesic is. They're both buprenorhine but suboxone is for treating opiate/opioid addiction. Good luck.

Exactly.

OP: Threads dedicated to what to ask your doctor are not allowed. We cannot tell you what drugs you should be on, or what drugs to ask to be on.

BTW: Suboxone is not for PM, but it's main ingredient, buprenorphine is.

^^^^ can't tell if OP has actual pain issues or is just trying to doctor shop. DO NOT TRY AND ASK FOR ADVICE FOR DOC SHOPPING ON BL!

I'm closing this because it's turned into a "what should I tell my doctor to get ____" thread. This is not allowed, I strongly advise that anyone who participated in that specifically reread the site rules and the guidelines for OD before posting again.

OP, you can ask what medication used for the treatment of addiction is also good for pain management. What you can not ask is what to say to a doctor to get a medication prescribed.
