Legalising drugs will not solve problems just destroy our children says Carole Malone

My blood boils when I hear loony liberal politicians (I’m thinking Nick Clegg) and middle class do-gooders telling us that ALL drugs should be legalised. That heroin, crack cocaine and LSD should all be freely available – even to teenagers.

Their argument is that if the State was in charge of the drugs industry instead of criminal gangs then the drugs wouldn’t be toxic and fewer people would die.

And there’ll be more of that silly talk in the coming weeks thanks to a Home Office report – trumpeted by Clegg – which claims punitive laws have no effect on curbing drug use.

What, so do we just give up and legalise them? If we can’t win the war on drugs do we just call it off? Do we do what we’ve done with other crimes we don’t have the money or the will to police – and just ignore them?

One of the countries cited as an example of decriminalisation in this report was Portugal. They legalised drugs in 2001. But now we know the numbers of 15 and 16 year olds using drugs has doubled there since laws were relaxed. Which is a total no brainer.

Then a bloke called Ian Birrell said on TV this week our Government spends billions of pounds on failed drugs policies. I’m sorry – unlike Portugal – our drugs policies aren’t failing. Since 1996 the use of Class A drugs among 16 to 24 year olds has plummeted by 47 per cent and the use of Class B by 48 per cent.

But commentators like Birrell still argue we should legalise them anyway because they’re everywhere and people can take them whenever they want. Well, maybe in his world they can, but not in mine. I don’t mix with people who shoot up every day or trip on LSD.

Don’t these lettuce-munching liberals realise millions of mums and dads all over Britain are fighting tooth and nail to keep their kids away from drugs?

And even though many of these parents live on estates where gangs sell drugs openly they’ll do whatever it takes to keep their kids away from them. Because they’ve seen what drugs can do.

Unlike those middle-class liberals, they live among hordes of hopelessly addicted youngsters whose lives are over before they’ve even started. These parents don’t want that for their kids. And they sure as hell don’t want to be lectured on the “benefits” of legalisation by a bunch of jumped-up modernisers who’ve never even set foot on a council estate.

Who the fucks says they should be allowed sale to teenagers? That's just not true. We want drugs regulated similar to alcohol. Which is ironic because when I was underage it was way easier to get illegal drugs than it was to get alcohol. I've never been carded by a drug dealer have you?

Why the hell is LSD always lumped in with things like crack, goddamn. I mean I'm in favor of legalization of EVERYTHING, but comparing LSD to crack is just...ugh. smh

She's spewing because there is a huge push in the UK at the moment in regards to drug law reform -

The case for decriminalising drugs in the UK is becoming irresistible

Drugs are a great evil – but it takes a lot of political courage to admit that keeping them illegal has completely failed.

There are now signs some MPs are realising the impulse to lock up drug users rather than treat them hasn’t worked for decades.

Yesterday’s report by the Home Office demonstrated that countries with severe penalties for using drugs, like Japan, haven’t seen lower levels of drug use than those which have more liberal laws.

‘Liberal’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘letting people get away with it’, by the way.

So why is it so hard for politicians like David Cameron to actually suggest to voters they’ve been wrong for so many years?

Here’s what the prime minister has to say on the question of reforming our drugs laws:

We’ve been focusing on education and prevention, and treatment… The evidence is what we’re doing is working. I don’t believe in decriminalising drugs that are illegal today. I don’t want to send a message that somehow taking these drugs is OK or safe.

It’s almost as if he wishes drugs were already legal.

They’re not, prime minister. Changing that is going to take some real bravery from a frontline politician.

It’s a shame Cameron isn’t going to be the man to do it.

Sooner or later politicians whose gut instinct is to stick with the status quo are going to realise their approach is losing them votes.

As soon as that happens we’ll see change. And, judging by the way public opinion is shifting, it doesn’t look like we’re going to have to wait much longer.

With a poll on 'should drugs be decriminalised in the UK' so far it's 90% Yes, 10% no.

Heh.

Follow the money... Her donations probably come from rehab centers and drug testing companies, the pariahs whose businesses will likely fail after prohibition, because they don't serve for the betterment of society, they just profit off a corrupt industry.

Besides all of her facts being incorrect of course... Everything I've read shows that drugs become less available to teenagers under any kind of regulation, as opposed to prohibition. (and they also become less appealing as subversive tools, both to teens and to addicted users)

She's sounding sort of desperate. I think that's a good sign. %)

We're living in a very important time for drug policy. We just have to keep the momentum going!

It's funny how any one who used illegal drugs in their teenage years will openly admit it was much easier to buy cocaine than to buy alcohol.
But don't listen to us, we're just a bunch of drug addicts right?

if they actually gave a fuck about childrens welfare they would implement finlands education system, legalise drugs, and campaign against mainstream politics

I belive this woman's brain is fried from all the hair treatments and toxic face paint.. vanity is your pathedic addiction, Get help.

This woman's arrogance and ignorance is astonishing.

She has the audacity to speak for others as if they elected her to represent them.

She peddles the same shit over and over again: "think of the children!"

Stupid conservative - most likely with ZERO first-hand experience of the mind altering substances she mentions.

These drug warriors will desperately grasp any and every remaining straw they can in order to bla bla bla their bullshit.

My blood boils because the arguments laid out by these idiots continue to be interpreted as rational - albeit, with increasingly less frequency.

Thank you for putting up that poll, so that you can see for yourself how many people disagree with your biased, distorted views.

43 years of the same shit, and you wanna continue. Sorry, but that's not gonna fly anymore. You better get used to it.

This revolting era of using a minority group as a scapegoat for everything that's wrong with your quality of life is coming to an end - get over it.

"Lettuce-munching liberals"??? What the fuck does that even mean? The sheer stupidity and ignorance of that comment alone is enough to discredit her and her fear-mongering. If she's implying that all liberals are vegetarian or vegan, she is wrong. But fuck, being wrong hasnt seemed to stop her before from spewing those toxic farts she calls words. Serious, what idiot decided to give her a platform for this bullshit at The Mirror

I've done more than my fair share of crack and LSD, an if anything, LSD is more intense than crack and lasts 12 hours instead of 15 to 30 seconds.

Aye, LSD is a long time to be trippin' - in my opinion at least. 12 hours is just too much, which is why I now only bother with it if I'm also using MDMA. And while that may seem even worse than only LSD, I find 'candyflipping' to be a very memorable experience indeed (in a good way).

Edit - This is also why I'm not a big fan of methamphetamine, as it lasts too freakin' long, I find. Dextro-amphetamine - while less potent and euphoric - is convenient because the effects last about 6 - 8 hours at most in my case. And then there's also the issue of neurotoxicity, but I digress.
