EADD Browsing and Tech Woes - Hands up who's gottem

So ATM you have no anti virus or Malware protection ? Read through this review :-

http://uk.pcmag.com/security-reviews/142/guide/best-free-antivirus-2014

If your machine is really in a pickle it may be easier to back up all your data (photos, music etc) to an external USB drive and then reload the OS, which I assume is Windows.

If your issues are exclusive to browsing have you tried a different browser, IE tends to suffer more issues because of it's wider distribution, much the same as Windows. I'm no Microsoft fan but the truth is that users suffer more virus, malware and other nasties because there are so many machines running Microsoft software.

For personal use I've switched to Linux Mint, it's free and you can load it from a UASB pen drive in less than an hour, it comes with Libre Office and everything else I need for a general use machine. Most versions of Linux can be run from the USB pen drive, this tends to be a little sluggish but gives you a chance to try it out and could get you out of trouble if your installed OS has gone west.

Cheers. I will check out those links.

Yeah, my machine really is in a complete pickle, so much so that i rarely even switch it off, as its so tempremental whether its even going to load Windows or not. Unfortunately the machine didnt come with an O/S disk, or Ive lost it, and it's now no longer supported to create a recovery disk or w/e. I have most of my stuff backed up to external HDDs incase the worst happens. I have AVG anti-virus installed, but no specific malware remover.

I use(d) Firefox since i discovered that it seemed quicker to load pages back in the days when broadband speed was an issue, and i'm too lazy to bother to change and export all my bookmarks and all that. 8) Plus firefox has loads of useful 'add-ons'.

I also have a virtually unused newer pc, but that fucking thing has been cursed, with one problem after another. Ive spent fucking hundreds on it, and now its playing the "operating system not found" game. I think the hard drive must be fucked. And its no longer an easy job for any layman to swap out hard drives. The cabling is way too complex, it used to be quite easy on earlier PCs :!

Complex cabling? I thought hard drives only run 2 cables, mines a few years old, sata and power cable, easy to swap a hard drive

Every PC harddisk I've used since the early 90s has been connected by just two cables: one for data, one for power.

there's about 50 cables coming out of this HDD, many of them going to inaccesable places. Earlier PCs seemed to be far more straightforward.

Theres loads of cables connecting a motherboard to components, there wont be 50 cables coming out of a hard drive

Likewise

There will only be 2 connectors, 1 power and one 'data' . ATM there are 2 common types IDE and the more modern SATA.

SATA will have 2 smallish connectors in black plastic, the cables almost always red

IDE will one power connector, usually in white/clear plastic with a number of coloured wires - its a standrad connector and there will be several powering other things like the DVD/CD drive. The 'data' cable will be a flat ribbon cable, often grey with a flat often black connector with a location key on one side.

I appreciate I've spent far too much of my life messing with cables, wires, beeps and shit but PCs really are fairly simple to put together and ultimately fix.

If you getting that 'no operating system found' message it likely to be one of a number of things:-

1.) Your OS install it totally fekered - unlikely but possible and best resolved by reinstalling if you don't have an Win 7 or XP disk borrow one or use you 'imagination' you have an internet connection ;)

2.) Your BIOS settings arent right and the PC isnt even trying to boot from your Hard Drive - on Boot up you'll see a message about getting into 'setup' it's usually F2 but it might be something else depending on the motherboard. Get in there and look for the boot order and check it has HD1 or similar as the first device also try and see if it recognises the HD is there, the BIOS menus havent changed much in many years...you'll feel right at home;)

3.) You Hard drive is fucked and mechanically or electronically faulty - it happens but if it's a desktop and not all that old I'd be quite pissed, that said you can get one for £30-40

A good way to get back online quickly, check if you have a serious motherboard fault etc or if your obsessive about security is to create a bootable Linux USB Pen Drive, try here https://tails.boum.org/ I wopuldnt want to uise that everyday but it's a useful backup and would help rule out numerous components

I've re-installed the O/S numerous times, from a rescue disk, and reset the bios settings to the right thing after doing that. (I'll double check that though when i next hook the thing up)

I was gonna post a pic of my HDD cabling many months ago, as i was having this very same conversation with someone else at that time. I think I will get round to charging my camera, taking the cover off the PC, and posting a pic of the inside sometime over the next couple of days. It is very irritating to have what would should be a much better PC that doesnt work. As this other ancient PC is just about hanging on in there i haven't bothered to get round to getting the new one repaired (again).

Is your hard drive actually a power supply unit? Or a Christmas tree?

So, any folks experiencing these kinds of issues (especially) if its affecting your ability to post and its keeping you away, please feel free to detail it here, yo <3

Yeah, cretinous moderators who don't understand the concept of a synonym.

lol

sounds like an os issue id say. you need to do a complete format of the hard drive using an actual OS disk, assuming you didnt mess up the cables already.

Not so much posting but on the mobile skin you can't view NSFW posts, so annoying! More of a vent really but yeah fix it. Been like it for absolutely ages.

You can use the desktop version on your mobile... links for different ones are in the support thread although perhaps you already know that. It would be nice if the mobile version would allow NSFW though agreed.

Bluelight Mobile (With Links to Both Mobile and Full Site!)

Yes I'm very proud to say I made the complaining thread (with a few other threads merged into it for good measure :) ) with the links in support n now it's a sticky :)

In all seriousness though go to "Support," "Bluelight Mobile" n on the first page you'll see two links (Knock worked them out when he was going through server-history or summit, n gave them to us, Bronson very kindly put them on the first page).

I'd recommend favouriting (wow that's actually a feckin' word) because BL has a habit, at times, of signing people out n putting them back onto the mobile version (luckily that's not happened to me on this new iPhone 5 c But does on my iPhone 5).

Hope that helps somewhat.
