The ninth of november? ;) Sep 11 was the anniversary of pinochet's coup in chile 73, the very first test run of 'neoliberalism'(thatcherism/whatever). I wouldn't put it past the neo-con nutjobs to have chosen the date for that very reason.

'Go sober' just looks like more charidee commerce and marketing bollocks (call me a cynic...). Cancer could be vastly reduced by us not filling the environment and our bodies with known horrible carcinogens and EM waves (cancer in the current proportions didn't exist a few hundred years ago) - funnily enough, many of the corporations that make the horrible carcinogenic chemicals also make expensive cancer medicines that don't actually cure you (there's a you tube vid about it, i forget the name...). I distrust corporate 'cancer research' as it's usually focused on creating a product to sell as opposed to what may be needed, eg prevention measures (like not eating/breathing carcinogens). Charity to help cancer sufferers is great obviously, though it's pretty much doing stuff that the government should be doing using taxes.

Nor did the ability to accurately diagnose many forms of cancer.

I don't disagree with you about the insane levels of carcinogens we expose ourselves to, and I wouldn't necessarily argue with the assertion that cancer's on the increase, but it's important not to forget that diagnostics have improved tremendously in the past century. Deaths / health problems which would at one time have been unexplained can now be attributed to cancer.

I'm sure this was done last year too. But I wasn 't on EADD this time last year. You all didn't have the luxury of EVEY back then but ya done now hahahaha

Slightly off tooic but does anyone know how to stop my iPhone screen from rotating ? It's getting right on my tits. Thanks, in advance.

I am not an Iphone expert, but im pretty sure all you do is drag down the settings menu from the top of the screen, there you will see a little backwards looping arrow. Just deselect it.

As far as i know a small % goes to the actual cause in question. depends on the organizations. google some stuff

AFAIK life expentancy was very low a few hundred years ago, before they developed cures for TB and other major diseases that have since become preventable or curable. Off the top of my head life expencancy was around 50 or something even lower in countries that have since gone on to become 'developed nations'. Cancer generally strikes people aged 50+, AFAIK people generally werent living that long centuries ago.

It's quite misleading to go off average life expectancy figures though because the amount of children dieing in their early years heavily skewed the average figures, its not saying that no one, or that it was very rare for anyone, to live to be older than 50.

Ofcourse the introduction of tobbaco and unhealthy diets and lifestyles has far worsened the situation though by causing the premature deaths of millions of people.

I was vaguely going off a meta study i half-remember reading (on here i think) which looked at cancer through history; it looked at egyptian mummies, among other things - the upshot was a large part of what we think of as 'normal' cancer rates and types only seem to occur in modern industrial societies, and so the implication is that 'modern life' itself somehow causes the extra cancer.

Low life expectancy could give less time for cancer to show up, but those egyptians often lived to a ripe old age and still didn't have much cancer. I still think the modern prevalence and variety of cancer is not natural and mostly is some side effect of our technology/commerce/culture. We've become used to the general level of unnatural carcinogens in our environment (on top of fags and such) - i suspect this helps cover a generally increased risk from previous/ongoing nefarious actions (bomb testing, radium watches, pcbs, dioxins, dodgy chemicals in plastics/foods, EMF etc etc)
 
Was considering doing this, mainly just to cut back on the old weekend binges. I managed all of January and 40 days over July-August totally sober but I've got a trip to Manchester the 3rd of October which will be a mad one and looks like I'll be going over to Ireland towards the end so no chance of me staying sober.
 
I dont binge, i might have one bottle of westons vintage a week atm. I wish i liked alcohol more tbh it would be much cheaper then the other shit i do

It's relatively common for students to indulge in something or other every day. Most of the students i knew did.

However, it was on the news the other day, that the current generation of twenty-somethings are increasing shunning drink and drugs compared to previous generations; they are being called "generation sensible".

Enlighten me, my dealings with them has always been very positive, I'm no great supporter but I do have a problem with those that claim to be christian but do nothing more than go to church and moralise about other people.

IMO Christian should be living to the overriding principles of Jesus's teachings, helping those in need and spreading a little bit of goodness. I'm sure the homeless would much prefer a blanket and a cup of hot soup than a load of people they don't know 'praying' for them.

I may have the Saly Army wrong but I've seen them doing these things and other good work in the community, that said they are god botherers so are bound to be into some dodgy stuff.

Why Christians? What about other religious people? Christians DO follow Jesus teachings. That post is a bit stereotypical. I am a Christian n I help people. I come on BL n try to help those in need by listening to their problems n talking to them. Most Christian help out - there are many ways of helping just because it's not getting a blanket for someone who's homeless don 't assume that the go to church n do nothing else. It's quite offensive to say the least.

To be fair - I don't know if they're still using Workfare (i.e. slave labour imposed on those claiming jobseekers allowance), but it left a nasty taste in my mouth as, prior to finding that out, I too had pretty warm attitudes to them.

I'm pretty anti-charity on the whole though (despite a couple of subs for things which definitely wouldn't be provided by the state). When effing donkey sanctuaries turn in thousands of times more revenue than research into rare genetic conditions that are cutting people's lives short in their droves, it's just a depressing reminder of how weakly sentimental a lot of people are.

Tax more - distribute more. None of that ill-earnt feeling of superiority for flashing cash.
