The Ferguson thread / additional race discussion

^God I've been waiting for this for years. It just makes sense. It doesn't only protect citizens from police brutality, it also protects police from false accusations. I wonder if they include audio.

Now to make this a national requirement....

Yeah but they are worried about potential victims privacy. They can blur out your face on YT with no problem I dont see the issue other than cost.

lol cost

here's a piece of spending from the county where I grew up:

Scrap the APCs and remove the need for them by providing more full transparency of police interaction with the public.

In regard to privacy, I don't really follow. Who is the "they" in that they are worried? The victims will surely want their faces to be seen in order to prove unjust actions by police. The police will have full access to the raw video which they can just release themselves. Can you elaborate a little more?

They'd want to be hard wired in a way that officers could not independently turn them on or off - there would also want to be regulatory oversight so that the footage is not managed by individual police precincts. Otherwise, I could see them as being little more than a fig-leaf with no real accountability :\

A. They are decommissioned and have little value left to the military
B. They are used solely for defensive purposes
C. .50 cal and larger is not authorized to be used for domestic purposes even with the military
D. I find as the more this Brown kid is discovered to be a drug crazed violent offender this is becoming more of the go to argument with the discussion of Ferguson...

What changes have we made to the system so far?

NOTHING!

Obviously there are systemic problems, and Ferguson is just another in a long line of incidents.

There is no way to even prove this officer is guilty of anything.
1. - He did not have to wear a camera. (he didn't even have to have his dash cam on either)
2. - we as a nation do not limit the deadly force of an officer once an "alleged" assault occurs.
3. - more shit i didn't think of.

every fucking time we divide into 2 dramatic groups and debate and moan, yet rarely are systemic changes made.

FUCK YESSSS
OMG WTF ?!?!? i can't believe we are taking steps in the right direction, what is happening?

A. They are decommissioned and have little value left to the military

Indeed. Scrap them all. Pay for the camera system.

B. They are used solely for defensive purposes

Weren't you recently photographed snorting Opana off of the barrel of your gun? Let's be real.

Besides, the recent debunking of the officer's eye socket injuries don't help his case either.

Makes you wonder if the brains are making decisions based on the premise that shit is going to get so bad that US citizens will start making IEDs.

During a time of budget crunching maintenance costs of such vehicles are certainly a legitimate concern, especially when considering how the educational system has been gutted.

The underlying and ultimate variable is class. Although, it's also a racial issue as some races are disproportionately stratified compared to others.

Yes identity politics do unfortunately play into it sometimes because in some places as some ethnic groups or races do have it better then others. Dealing with the identity politics and abolishing divisions within the Proletariat is the first step in the revolutionary process really. Once the working class are all put on a level playing field as opposed to having a sort of 2 tiered working class where one ethnic group, gender, etc is oppressed slightly less and turned down for a job first then you present the biggest threat to the bourgeois dictatorship as they have nothing else to use as a false flag to cause divisions.

MDAO, I have worked with multiple races of people as well, especially recently, and have formed relationships with these people. The interactions weren't really any more negative than with whites, for the most part. Dealing with black drug dealers on the other hand has been different for the most part. And as well, I guess I do notice a difference, in for instance when I worked in service, that blacks really dont tip well, in general, and oerhsos that led to resentment, but I can say that it might be and probably mosy likely is more to do with some vibration from where they have come from in society... Not just current socioeconomic status but what has carried on.

I get that we are a blended culture, and quite honestly, I feel a divide in myself when I wish for segregation. Since I have, I find myself at best, in conflict, and seemingly rejecting a part of myself. I don't see how some of the strict whites only people do it, honestly. What music do they listen to? Even 'white' music has roots in kinds of musics that were largely influenced by people who are black, for instance, and in times I've felt the certain split that I feel sometimes, I'm unable to enjoy things like I did. I'm in a fight with things. I go through times when I agree in ways, and those when I don't, with many of those I speak with here.

As for one culture basically forcing another to assimilate, this is what I worry about with multiculturalism. I am not threatened by people from Latin America moving into the States, because largely, I consider our cultures similar. They have a strong similarity. Perhaps its the same religion... Even though it was imposed upon them. They were colonized by people culturally similar to me, in the ways that matter. But one of the reasons I fear for a place like Britain, culturally, is that they are a declining population- they aren't having many children, and those of alien cultures, Islamic cultures, are having more children. In this case, at some point they may be the dominant or most plentiful people, and their interests might overshadow naturals.

Part of it is racial. Maybe its attaching my culture to my race.

Holy shit you are actually admitting more or less that segregation is a stupid idea 8o . Wow i think i am going to have a coronary here. Of course America and the South African Apartheid government found that out awile ago themselves but better late then never for you. For one thing there is no white culture as being white does not mean you have the same culture as another white person at all. When people say white culture they really mean white nationalism as it's just something used by white supremacists to try to make up some kind of mystical white identity. Much like the same kind of Ultranationalism Nazi Germany used really. My culture has no more in common with say someone from Italy as a example then someone from Iran really.

And yes you are right about music if black blues musicians had never existed the Beatles, Rolling stones, the Kinks and every other band that came after never would have came about or atleast sounded anything like they do. Even heavy metal is influenced heavily by the blues as anyone who has ever listened to Led Zeppelin knows. Even Rave was heavily influenced by the Northern Soul music that was made by black DJ's in Northern England and was really popular with white working class northerners. American country music was also heavily influenced by the blues and Hank Williams was taught how to play guitar by some poor black guy that he knew. So yeah if your a racist you'd better start deleting your music collection :\

I don't see why this would cause a conflict in yourself. I mean it's not as if all white European culture is the same now is it? So why should you feel conflicted about liking another cultures music or whatever just because they are a different color then you? I just don't it you POV on this at all.

About fucking time! They should make it so it cannot be turned off accidentally or otherwise and have the video stored by and if needed investigated by a completely impartial monitoring authority. You can't leave the pigs in control of that because they will covered for each other. I really hope they do this in Canada but seeing as Canuks just love their fucking red coat state lackeys (for some reason people think the mounties are better then city cops or American cops which in my own experience is the opposite) i can't see it happening unless the cops up here shoot and kill another black or mentally ill person here again for no good reason.

Then they should sell the gear they don't need to buy the fucking cameras. As for the Brown kid yeah umm drug crazed violent offender lol. Id bet my arrest record is far longer then that kids is ffs. Also calling someone drug crazed on bluelight is being abit hypocritical don't you think? :\

The us government throws money at the police forces for the "war on drugs". The more they focus on the drugs the more the government is willing to throw their way. That's why all these little towns have paramilitary type guns, apc's etc. it's fairly common for most police depts to have the majority of cars with no cameras etc. (from my experience anyway)

Ain't it just hilarious that we have to have black men killed plus a few good riots just to change something so simple as cops wearing body cameras? In England we have a similar story, though with a more ridiculous ending than the one you'll have hopefully.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Mark_Duggan

Sorry for using wiki, Im sure y'all can find better sources. But basically Mark Duggan was followed by police and shot dead in his car at traffic lights. A gun, purported to be his, was found an unfeasible distance away from the car he never managed to leave before being shot. At the inquest, the cops got off. I believe this is currently being appealed on the grounds of stupidity amongst other things. There is no way Duggan could have thrown the gun the distance it was planted found and an independent witness who saw what actually happened had his evidence dismissed.

Still, we're getting cops with cameras yo. Sure they will never switch them off at opportune moments either.

^^...They certainly need to be tamper proof.

Evil, the war on drugs makes a good facade. It has allowed our law enforcement to form a never ending enemy, which is not a true enemy or threat. This has allowed law enforcement to seize everyone's (not just drug users) rights and desensitize us to being handled against our will without complaint. Their motive is to subdue and control, and to protect the interests of the few that their handlers tell them too (hint, in this few are included the people involved with funding, producing, distributing, arming, and fueling their toys...and I don't mean the ever replaceable workers).

I wasn't going to come back to this thread because it just got stupid, but I couldn't help myself when I read this...

Protests, anger, doubt prevail at Ferguson meeting

By ALAN SCHER ZAGIER

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Elected leaders in the St. Louis suburb where an unarmed black 18-year-old was fatally shot by a white police officer hoped to use their first public meeting since Michael Brown's death as a chance to promote community healing.

Instead, they were greeted Tuesday night with anger, outrage and warnings of voter retribution at the ballot box. Proposals to overhaul the municipal courts and create a citizen police review board were greeted warily, if not with outright skepticism.

"You've lost your authority to govern this community," said St. Louis activist John Chasnoff. "You're going to have to step aside peacefully if this community is going to heal."

The shooting last month exposed an undercurrent of racial unrest in Ferguson and other mostly black communities of north St. Louis County, and prompted days of sometimes violent protests.

Officials have pledged to boost minority hiring in Ferguson's 53-person police force, which has just three black officers, and to meet informally in city neighborhoods to promote a public dialogue.

But within minutes of the start of the City Council meeting, where the proposals were briefly discussed, several demonstrators stood up and shouted as the council tried to cover some routine business. Later, others stood and chanted, "Shut it down!" while raising their hands in the air. Several witnesses say Brown raised his hands as officer Darren Wilson shot him.

The first person to take the microphone during the public comment period said he was there for the mayor's job. It was a theme echoed throughout, as speaker after speaker expressed doubt about planned reforms — and anger at the government officials on the stage.

"I heard the mayor say Ferguson doesn't have a race problem," said Taurean Russell, 30. "There must be two Fergusons."

Earlier, the council had announced proposals to reduce revenue from court fines used for general city operations and more broadly reform court procedures. Critics say reliance on court revenue and traffic fines to fund city services penalizes low-income defendants who can't afford private attorneys and who are often jailed for not promptly paying those fines.

In the last fiscal year, court fines and fees accounted for $2.6 million, or nearly one-fifth of the city budget. That's nearly twice as much as the city collected two years earlier.

The meeting, exactly one month after Brown's death, was held in a local church to accommodate several hundred attendees who had to walk through metal detectors at police-guarded entrances.

Several speakers reiterated plans to block Interstate 70 in Ferguson on Wednesday in an act of civil disobedience. Organizers say they want to bring rush-hour traffic to a standstill.

The U.S. Justice Department announced last week that it was launching a broad investigation into the Ferguson Police Department, looking for patterns of discrimination.

Ferguson, a city of 21,000, is about 70 percent black. The mayor and five of the six City Council members are white. A 2013 report by the Missouri attorney general's office found that Ferguson police stopped and arrested black drivers nearly twice as often as white motorists, but were less likely to find contraband among the black drivers.

Police have said the shooting of Brown followed a scuffle after Wilson told Brown and a friend to move out of the street and onto a sidewalk. Autopsies concluded Brown was shot at least six times.

Brown's parents joined about 20 supporters and activists outside police headquarters earlier Tuesday to reiterate calls for Wilson's immediate arrest.

I like how it said that the shooting of Brown followed a "scuffle". It's usually not good to get into "scuffles" with cops. They like have guns and the right to use them to defend themselves from violent thugs and stuff. But seriously when the fuck is the black community going to quit feeling sorry for itself. They already had the schools shutdown do to their stupid antics and now are going to throw a hissy fit and block the interstate? That'll really stick it to the man, you know what with stopping working people from getting home to their families. Apparently those things are very important to them. And when the fuck are they going to stop doing the fucking wave? Seriously that shit is getting old. The cops shot a violent thug in self defense, fucking deal with it. /rant

If the cop was assaulted, and Brown had gone for his weapon, and if Brown was charging him, yes.
