Study: Medical pot might reduce drug overdose deaths
Trevor Hughes,
August 25, 2014

Access to medical marijuana appears to have saved thousands of lives over the past few years by reducing accidental overdose deaths from drugs like Vicodin, Percocet and OxyContin, a new study says.

States with legalized medical marijuana saw, on average, 1,700 fewer deaths a year from prescription drugs than they would have otherwise, says the study led by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Even if there is a legitimate correlation, it's quite the stretch to claim that the cannabis access has actually reduced the number of deaths.

I didn't read the article, but Weed+Opiates have always given me a nod, poetentiated my opiates(small amounts too). Benzo's and opiates, although go well together have never given me a nod unless ricdiulous doses have been taken of one or the other or high doses or both. Like 8 30's shot and 10mg of xanax/klonopin throughout the day when I was actively using all the time(on subs now)..but same or lower dose of 30's w/ some weed and I was in the spot I wanted to be, maybe add one or two benzo's throughout the day...not 10.

I love marijuana, I self medicate with it and think it should be 100% legal but hate how biased the pro-mmj movement's anti-opiate stance is. Lots of people misunderstand the term accidental overdose. It doesn't mean you made a mistake with your meds and accidentally took too much, all it means is you didn't try and commit suicide. A vast majority of the people in the ODs they mention were from people abusing these medications and not taking them as directed by their doctor; people who would still abuse them even if they had access to marijuana legal under state law.

which in the long run, opiates or canibus end up providing the greatest amount of pain relief?
It depends on the person and depends on the condition; telling somebody who gets better relief from opiates they should just use marijuana is no different than telling somebody who gets better relief from marijuana they should just use opiates.

I can't wait for all the alternative meds to come out of this legalization movement.

But I also hate stoners I tried to get people to simply agree with the statement that smoke inhalation is harmful. I explicitly put not marijuana but any byproduct of combustion. Everyone argued that you can eat it and called me stupid :( I just wanted stoners to admit that though its "better" it's not safe or healthy. It took days for 3 people to agree. Ignorance and confirmation bias is annoying on both sides. And was called a clergy loving Obama care supporter who wants to steal our guns... Man insults in 2014 have become lame /rant
