Blood work to get prescribed Xanax

I went to my doctor several weeks ago about my anxiety problems. After talking to him in depth, he prescribed Paxil. He then scheduled a follow-up visit, and said that if Paxil wasn't working, he would do blood work and we would move on to more powerful medication (Xanax, I'm assuming). What would be the purpose of him doing blood work? Is this normal protocol?

My psych doctor wanted me to have blood work too which I had no problem since I had recently had blood drawn several times. My primary doctor had forwarded to him. At my next visit, he mentioned that there was no drug test included. He's not prescribing anything besides antidepressants anyway so he didn't press the issue. I would think your doctor wants to ensure that you are not taking illicit drugs. Or make sure you have no other abnormalities. Only guessing though. What did he write on the order paper?

He hasn't done the blood work yet, so I'm not sure. I take Xanax on occasion, so I guess my main concern is whether or not he is doing it to see if I've been taking drugs. Would that be why?

Oh so it's an MD who can do it there ok. They check your cholesterol, liver enzymes, white/red count, etc. It may be possible that he would check for drugs too. Didn't they want a urine sample? At my old practice, they always wanted urine. But nowadays, they just seem to want blood work. It's hard to say. Just make sure when you do give blood that you're clean.

just cuz ur getting bloodwork doesn't mean its a toxicology, it could be for certain things, checking if ur levels are normal to use a controlled substance, most likely if they want a tox for drugs, u wil piss in a cup in the bathroom at the lab...blood testing is way for expensive for drug testing, besides they want urine to see how severe and how long u could be using if u were

the DEA cracks down on practices to test they're patients now and again that are RXed controlled drugs..plus saving his ass in case u die mixing it with drugs an dnot doing a drug test to make sure ur not shopping..# of things
