Your word of the day.

Haha yeah it depends. I'm on holiday at the moment so I've got an insanely irregular sleeping schedule, which always happens as soon as holidays start, I'm a professional night-owl

Good actually, I still have lots to learn - that's why I chose intricacies as word of the day =D - but I'll get there. It's nice to know I have a positive impact on such a big and varied community. How's it going for you? EADD is a much much more busy subforum than MED. I think that can't be easy. More so because there are a lot of social topics. You seem to be doing a great job however, judging from what I've read

To be fair, people are behaving themselves largely speaking (*edit* - I spoke too soon) & there are plenty of us to chip in. Much the same as you though... just learning as I go. Still waiting eagerly to give my first infraction. Any takers?

My word for today is Mountain. (thread index updating 8()

Damn fine word, BlueBull. I never got along with German at school but have always admired the unique way of wording things y'all have. I think it was the German word for television which I first noticed as being especially kewl. I won't try to spell it now (cos I can't) but did like the meaning of it. Summat to do with windows from memory. Very descriptive anyway.

Haha I'm not German, though I do speak the language a bit =D I like that word a lot though, not just the meaning but also the sound of it. It has to do with instinct. It means to have a great instinctive proficiency to handle a certain situation. Meaning your actions come naturally, you understand the situation in all its' aspects, you have great situational awareness, you display immense proficiency when handling it, almost incomprehensible to others. For example someone that diffuses an enormously tense situation here on bluelight between members, a situation that seems unsolvable, using just a few perfectly timed and carefully weighed words. That person in that situation would have 'fingerspitzengefühl'. Or when you drop something, and catch it in mid air with a seemingly superhuman reflex, that's also having 'fingerspitzengefühl'

In my case I forgot I had my headphones plugged in my laptop and when I got up the cable hit a can, which I caught in mid-air with my foot. Aw yeah %)

I obviously had to look it up to have the slightest idea what it meant and - like many German words - I'm not sure there really is a precise English equivalent. Not in a single word anyway. Lots that may suggest elements but not the whole thing. Unfortunately, German words are quite hard to spell and pronounce if not proficient in Germans spelling and pronunciation so doubt it will take root here. Really is a nice word though.

I think my favourite German word is the one for guinea pig which sounds remarkably like a sneeze.

You mean Fernseher?

The Germans make up some fantastic words with way too many letters, try pronouncing Rechtschutzversicherungsgesellchaften (legal protection insurance companies) for example :)

edit: a guinea pig is a Meerschweinchen in German

Apparently,

If there's a certain time of day when your kittens all settle down to nap, then you can call that period their quiescence Their period of quiet and restfulness.

But I dunno. There might be a riot going on.
