EADD Movie Recommendations Thread v.4...not for TV series and stuff Dan...

Yeah it was Tony Scott.

I'm a great fan of Tarantino. For sure the script is the most memorable parts of most his films but I think you can't down play the role of the direction in facilitating that. He puts the emphasis on the dialogue at just the right times.

I would agree. I'm sure it would've been better if he did but he didn't and although it has that feel of being a bit of a nearly-there it's still a bloody good script and it's not like it's so badly done it is actually bad - it's just that it's very obvious that it lacks the flair. Tony Scott is one of those 'competent' directors who makes decent films but it does tend to always feel a bit like he still thinks he's directing adverts at times. I liked Natural Born Killers too even though it strays a fair bit from his script at times. He sold the scripts so somebody else gets to overlay their particular vision (that does sound wanky yes - I blame the film and media courses ) on top and around it.

Not seen that one. <adds to list>

To be fair, I obviously don't pay enough attention to credits... I didn't realise he directed the likes of Top Gun, Spy Game, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State. I quite enjoyed Spy Game actually.

I would say dependable would be just as good a way to sum him up. You get pretty much what you expect out of his films.

Oliver Stone ripped it to fuck and changed the whole intent completely. ie he gave it a moral compass.

BUT for all Oliver's sins as a preacher packing a baseball bat, I fucking love NBK so much. Everything about it hits my buttons in the right way. Casting, stylization, soundtrack, it's fucking perfect. Possibly makes my top 10 even.

I have the scripts to all Tarantinos movies cept the last 2 I think. A coupla doubles too if you want em <3

[edit] Re Tree of Life. I liked it but it was a fucking mess towards the end. An attempt at filming streams of consciousness and perception imo, which isn't an easy concept but I like that direction of ideology in films. Lynch is best for that imo

<3 Tarantino films

Went on a lil downloading spree and ended up watching the new Transformers film the other day. it was even shitter than i expected. awful directing & editing, dull empty characters, shitty dialogue, high budget soulless bullshit, a film for gormless retards

Well. Transcendence was a let down, but I figured as much.

Dawn of the planet of the apes was pretty good.

Got Divergent to watch on the train home. Then Season 3 of Suits to start!

Best Tarntino film he never made for sure. Worth watching just for Gary Oldman in dreads but handily the rest is also brilliant. Love that music too - the one that was suddenly on every advert and telly prog for years afterwards. Belter of a film that.
.

Work of art that film

Work of art that film, haven't seen it for ages. might watch it again tomorrow

What, True Romance? It was brill, my mum recommended it to me cos it's one of her favourites. Had no idea what it was about before I started watching but it was so my kind of thing. I wish I was Alabama <3 There are some vague similarities anyway haha.

Yeah, such a good film... amazing. beautiful ending

"I look back and am amazed that my thoughts were so clear and true, that three words went through my mind endlessly..."

All this talk of Tarantino made me eventually get round to watching:

Death Proof

2007-08-ukdp.jpg

Am I glad I did... this a hidden gem. It's actually part of a duo of films called 'Grindhouse'... I might watch the other one at some point but I just watched this half because Tarantino did it. If you look at the reviews they are rather mixed but if you ask me they are all inbreds. This film is exactly as it is meant to be... quirky & a bit silly. It's flaws are meant to be there. It's sexy & fun with some scares... what more could you ask for? A classic in it's own right.

I was particularly impressed by Kurt Russell & Zoë Bell in their respective roles. If you haven't seen it... watch it NOW! :D

I think I'll have to go & watch some of the movies that inspired it soon.

I really didn't get on with Death Proof. Possibly because I watched it in the full, uncut form of Grindhouse complete with trailers and the 'B-movie before the other B-movie' Planet Terror - all of which (including the trailers) piss from a great height over Death Proof (in my opinion and all that).

This does bug me slightly cos it seems odd for such a massive missfire from Tarantino. Especially when it's based on (ie ripped off from (it is a Tarantino movie after all ;)) such classics as Vanishing Point (which is to this day one of very few VHS films I still own a copy of - so good Primal Scream based an entire album (of the same name) on it). I have always had the feeling I must've been missing out on something somewhere but it bored the shit out of me. Grindhouse would've worked better if they'd switched the order of the films I (strongly) suspect cos Planet Terror is just brilliant whilst Death Proof is kinda plodding. I know they're meant to be aping B-movies - and many, many B-movies are pretty frikkin dull - but it would've worked better if they'd put just a smidge more thought into it instead of Tarantino getting the top spot purely for his name and reputation. In this case his effort was the least interesting aspect of the entire package. And by some considerable distance.

What do you think of Dusk till Dawn shambles? Watched it a few years ago, loved the first half

Yeah I had read that it was better standalone. At least you've given me some motivation to go & watch Planet Terror soon.

I don't know... I honestly think it is exactly what Tarantino wanted it to be. Maybe it's not what some fans or critics wanted, but it worked for me.

I watched Vanishing Point earlier in the year with my old man... great film.

^ I'm sure it is what he wanted it to be and there are two versions of it (and Planet Terror) at least. If you get Grindhouse itself both films are shorter than the separate releases. I have all the variants but never gotten around to watching the full-length version of Death Proof cos it just bored me to tears frankly. Will get around to it sometime but even if the full-length improves it 10x it stilll ain't gonna come close to being as good as Planet Terror - nor even any of the (frikkin genius) trailers that are part of the original Grindhouse package.

I don't doubt for one moment it is what he intended to make. It's just that he didn't do a very good job of it (my opinion blahblah). When he rips stuff off as blatantly as that he usually adds something to make it his own even with the rampant theft, but in this case he seemed to have lost everything which made the source films classics in the first place. I may well be being too harsh - if I saw it standalone I could well have liked it more - but in context it was such a poor relation to the rest of the stuff it was an embarrassment frankly.

I <3'd the whole thing myself. Worked a treat - especially seeing it at the cinema with no advance knowledge of the plot. In related news, I have a feeling I may be the only person on Earth to have also seen both sequels to it (yes, it is a trilogy). They are truly, truly shocking. Perhaps in the right way, perhaps not. Kinda depends what you want from a film. Isn't there a TV series based on it now which also has Rodriguez involved (unlike the sequels to the film)?

Yes I noticed that the TV series is up on Netflix... apparently it is worth a watch.

I saw a trailer for the series somewhere and looked decent enough and the fact that Rodriguez not only is involved but actually put his name to it suggests it's probably worth a watch. I don't have Netfllix but will watch it at some point via *ahem* other means I'm sure.

..what's wrong with the second half? Good film, that.

I still need to see Vanishing Point, too. Been on my to-watch list since that Primal Scream album came out..

It's the film that Tarantino wished he could make but even he couldn't 'borrow' from it to quite that extent so ended up with a pale imitation of it. My opinion blahblah.

Wasn't Hobo With a Shotgun one of the Grindhouse trailers? I'm sure it was. That is how to do a proper B-movie tribute. Rodriguez 'got it' with Planet Terror. All the other trailers (orginally the project was going to include full version of all of them but Grindhouse flopped so badly that never really happened) 'got it'. Tarantino - 'King of the B-movies' missed by a country mile. Bizarre. But also FACT! Unless he really did intend to make one of those kinda B-movies which actually are borderline unwatchable due to immense dullness that is I suppose.

(my opinion blahblah)
