Gibberings CLXXII - I Have Zero Imagination

What's the world coming to when you can't drop a casual Norman Tebbit reference into a conversation on an internet drug forum without people taking it literally? :D

My house currently looks like its been burgled, a few chaotic mad dash mornings to get my shit together in time for work (why does time pass far quicker when you are short of it like this than on any other occasion:?) Anyway, a shitload of hoovering, clothes washing, and food buying needs doing.

But that can wait as a pool table is beckoning me, i have found that since starting work that my temprement has already improved quite a bit in this regard, in that i dont get so very easily wound up, swamped by frustration, disappointmnt, despondecy, anger and confusion etc when things dont immedieatly go as well as i would like them to. A greater level of patience, and tolerance to frustrations and dissapointments helps enormously. I found last time that turning up with low expectations of myself helped, that way if things do hapen to go well, then my confidence grows, i start striking the ball more fluently, things click into place allround, and i become almost compulsively addicted. I keep saying "last frame now" but i enjoy playing so much, especially when i am 'on form' that i cannot drag myself away from the place.

Pentedrone?

Hope you're okay, MDB. How's work?

The only things I know about the 80s come from Ashes to Ashes. Gene Hunt pretty much epitomizes the 80s to me...

The stylised and idealised eighties, maybe.

You missed a hell of a lot. The arse end of the Cold War, the arse end of working class dignity, the arse end of that chick who sang 'I Think We're Alone Now' (the first time), the Miners' Strike, football hooliganism aplenty, bad hair, bad food, bad British cars, bad music, great music, people wearing jumpers with holes in without it being a 'statement'...

I was only a kid at the time, but I was there.

The Care Bears. Fucking hell, I've tried to blank them out. My sister used to chuck my Transformers down the stairs if we had a row (as we obviously did on an almost daily basis) but I never had the wherewithal to take a knife to her Care Bears. More's the pity. :D

One of my most vivid memories of the decade is of the day Kenneth Williams died. If we didn't cry, we came pretty close.

Given my age in the 80s, my only experience with them was dealing them in Dope Wars, the game. Sounded fun though.

I find a lot of these things aimed at kids down right creepy.

Mind you, can't go far wrong with the Clangers. =D

Wee.. thunder & lightning! Not seen any in a couple of years. Unfortunatly I think I'm right on the edge of the storm & it's moving away.

I remember once we literally had it overhead in the middle of the Winter believe it or not... there was a blizzard outside & suddenly there was a huge flash with the thunder going off simultaneously... it sounded like a plane had crashed into our lawn or something.

*edit* - storm is moving closer. :)

narh, i ditched the rest of it. Apart from my reliabilty issues over the last couple of weeks, other aspects are improving, like the getting to know some of the people and getting the hang of the job itself, so some days its actaully enjoyable as they are a good bunch. Gonna be trying my utmost to keep my reliabilty blip to just that, so that over the course of 12 weeks it wont look so bad (hopefully), especially if i never let them down again by either being late or absent over the next 8 weeks, they may take a chance on me, and keep me on a bit longer as a temp. That's all i can do, despite the fuckups for which i have no one to blame but myself.

Truth is they are woefully understaffed, and if i can proove myself and convince my doubters over the next couple of months that i can do the job and fit into the team, then that will work in my favour and they might overlook the handfull of reliabilty fuckups. Managment have yet to raise the subject with me, its virtually like they are not managing me at all, and are just seeing what i do under my own steam and motivation. I dont think i can be all that bad, even if i have had a few blips, or they would surely have fired me already no matter how short staffed they are. I really dunno. I do know that i have to put in an unblemished 8 weeks though, and then i might stand a chance of being kept on. Could certainly use the fucking money continuing to come in, thats for sure. If i succeed in making another 4-6 weeks without any more fuckups i may ask for some feedback as to my chances. (wont be ordering any more pent!) Also the guy who interviwed me, and decided to hire me, seems to continue to have some belief in me.

Good stuff, MDB. On both the binning of pentedrone and the job front. I was pretty worried for a sec.

The coolest thing of the 80's has to be the original Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.

I fuckin loved the Turtles. Heroes in a half shell, Turtle Power :D

Later they were renamed TM Ninja Turtles. Just some turtle trivia for ya.

How could we forget the Turtles? How could we forget April O'Neill*? <3 :o

I was under the impression (though this comes from the memory of my nine-year-old mate telling me) that they were originally 'Ninja', but the UK and Ireland marketing team thought that would seem too violent, so they changed it to 'Hero' just for that one market.

As with many things I say, that may be complete bollocks, but it's what Matthew Wright told me in the playground, and his surname was 'Wright' after all.

That's twice I've alluded to the guy in one day. Wonder how he's doing? He's supposedly gay now. The girls used to adore him too.

*Better looking than any journalist I've slept with, anyhow.

Most of the things mentioned in the last page or so have gone right over my head. I feel so young. I remember watching the clangers when I was little though, used to have a video with them and bagpuss on. No idea how old I actually was but it was one of my favourites <3

Matthew Wright is correct. Hopefully the guy you are talking about isn't that prat off the telly. Odious man.

a friend of mine once met the woman who knitted the clangers! cool.

alasdair

That's not cool...

NSFW:
It's fucking epic!! :D

I used to get up at 5am to watch Clangers on the TV when I was like 5 or something. I didn't even need an alarm clock for it... I just woke up at the right time.

Dedication.

I tried to get my Nephew hooked on it but he wasn't interested. I did manage to get him into Fireman Sam though. The only downside to that was I had to watch it with him all weekend long. 8)

Haha, I almost qualified it with 'not THAT Matthew Wright', but didn't. And you're right about that particular Wright. What a dick.

Summer, stop rubbing it in. We're not all that old, y'know. I swear.
