Why do prolific posters 'disappear' when they become mods?

Just wondering why formerly prolific posters like Shambles and Mailmonkey (not to mention poor Knock :() seem to disappear once they become (or re-become in Shambles' case) mods! Is there a BL black hole? Is the site run by alien lizards from another dimension feeding off our people? Do they lure you into their 'inner circle' then devour you whole, then regurgitate a thoroughly indoctrinated shadow of their former selves? Come on, what's going on?

to bring you up to speed;

knock, quiite possibly the best mod to have ever graced our grubby collective here at eadd, is no longer alive. shambles on the other hand, for better or worse yada yada... most certainly is. in fact hes as nauseatingly prolific as ever, replete with standard v1. tyrannical personality change. not quite sure how you missed the guy. the board usually suffers some form of stim-binge related, bizarre alteration on an all too regular basis

knock, fighting on the side of common sense and true love for the open forum of debate, hr, bitch and counter bitch - community we had (thats had) here at eadd... managed, via his HUGE natural besting in both intellect and manhood-size, of certain individuals up the chain - was conspired against by said halflings, to lose his job of BEST MOD EVER over a ridiculous minor technicality that - given normal circumstances - should not have resulted in more than a passing admonishment in private.. advertisment for his now vacant position began post-haste, knock - understandbly devestated, laments to a few close friends and im sad to say, terribly - is found dead.. two days after his removal.

all the while this is happening, and in the typical newfound spirit of efficacy - the hunt for knocks' replacement continues apace, and very shortly afterwards, indeed before even the guys funeral had taken place.. well, small world etcetera etcetera - knocks hurriedly adopted bythe afore mentioned shambles himself (this may have been a de-facto no-contest though, given the fact the majority of us were away in shock and doing our best to keep our stomach contents from showering our keyboards, monitors and screens (cracked or otherwise) in a fine mist/chunky soup of toxic disbelief. so yeah, the best candidates may not have had opportunity to apply

but its actually all okay now, so dont worry

hope that helps

Each has their own personal circumstances. However, there are still ex-mods here such as SammyG who is still active.

You get burnt out modding eadd, its hard work and can take a considerable amount of time out of your life. You don't always see what a mod does on the public board, a lot of the work is invisible to members - the mod screen is very different. The responsibility is massive, so when you let go it's quite liberating!

After all that intense interaction and time on a drug forum is it really surprising a lot of us get other interests, move on and do other things..

Knock was one of the best - though to name any is unfair and none of us see the type and complexity of work that goes into modding eadd. Evad, whore to name a few I have so much respect for too.

Thanks for reminding me to put something on my shopping list:

You have to start reading every post in every thread and dealing with admin issues that mean you are less inclined to make regular posts.

So, where is Shambles these days? I know he enjoys his occasional PV binges, but not for weeks at a time.

Pretty sure he's been gone for months at a time in the past. Always comes back eventually though.

I agree with Kate - modding is extremely time consuming on a busy forum, and can be quite intense at times - I ended up posting less and less too I think - mainly due to my own life needing more of my attention than that I was giving trying to stay on top of this place.

Modding a forum sort of changes your relationship with it / posting style imo.

^ Yeh, thoroughly understood Owen x 2 - and BHM, thanks for that detailed response. Of course, I am well aware that Knock is no longer with us, just as I am well aware that something happened to his mod status shortly before his demise (though I have no idea what that something was). I just hope that it wasn't a contributary factor in his passing. However, some posters, like Shambles, are conspicuous by their absence. Similarly, MailMonkey seemed to disappear without trace very shortly after becoming a mod. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I've got my tinfoil hat ready just in case....

I disappeared shortly after becoming a mod and didn't resurface for years.

So why was that? Was it the sudden and unexpected responsibility which comes with the job? (Something which us druggies don't take to very well in all honestly). Was it more than you bargained for? It seems that some people desperately want to be a mod whenever a position becomes available, without thoroughly understanding the consequences. Perhaps this should be seen as a warning to those who crave the title, but cannot handle the position?

No it was life circumstances.

There was nothing stopping me from weighing in with a message I just didn't do it for some reason.

Look at it this way: imagine waking up to a house full of screaming children every day. They're neither your own children, nor are you being paid to endure their company, but they'll carry on screaming regardless.

Would you not consider that a bit of a raw deal? :D

Yeh, I see yer point.. but mods volunteer for the position don't they? So it's tough titties as far as I'm concerned ;)

Edit: that's not directed at you Owen by the way - if your circumstances dictated otherwise then obviously, real life must come first.

Meh I don't mind even if it was directed at me.

Would have taken two minutes for me to send a message explaining what was going on for me and relinquishing my post but I didn't do it. It was a poor show.

Great post, BHM. Maybe a bit harsh on Shambles, who made quite an effort to put EADD on track after Knock's death and has been by far the most active moderator since. (bar a few temporary awol's)

Knock was the best Moderator I've ever come across. Though, in fairness, I think there's a lot more behind the scenes towards his demodding than a lot of people realise. I did notice he would publicly rebel against the admins (and with bad reason) in the support forum, which is never going to go down well.
