Nice to see at least one mom seeing another way than the "ban them, ban them, ban them" approach.

A teenage schoolgirl died after taking an 'exceptionally' pure version of the party drug ecstasy, an inquest heard today.

Martha Fernback, from the Summertown area of Oxford, suffered a cardiac arrest last July at the city's Hinksey Park after taking 0.5g of MDMA, known as ecstasy.

The drug the 15-year-old GCSE student took turned out to be 91 per cent pure, compared to the average street-level purity of 58 per cent, Oxfordshire Coroner's Court heard.

She died at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on July 20, only a couple of hours after taking around half a gram of the drug.

Following the inquest at County Hall in Oxford, Martha's mother Anne-Marie Cockburn called for drugs to be legalised and regulated and said she wants to meet senior politicians, including the Home Secretary.

'It has been 328 days since my precious girl was safely by my side,' she said. 'Martha wanted to get high, she didn't want to die - no parent wants either, but one of those is preferable to the other.

'I would like to meet with Theresa May, Norman Baker and Yvette Cooper to start a sensible dialogue for change, from prohibition to strict and responsible regulation of recreational drugs.

'This will help to safeguard our children and lead to a safer society for us all by putting doctors and pharmacists, not dealers, in control of drugs.'

At that trial, prosecutor David Povall said Martha had used the drug before.

'Martha was saying the drugs were amazing, "It feels like a dream, it's better than the last time that we did it".'

Her friends then noticed that Martha was sweating a lot. She said she was going for a swim in a pond to cool down.

'At that point, Martha collapsed,' said Mr Povall. 'Her legs went from underneath her.' Shortly after arriving at hospital Martha died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The remaining quantity of the 91% pure MDMA has been left with a Mr Ismene, who has promised to destroy it.

Most interesting comment on the first page being...

So-called legalisation would not have affected the issue in this sad case - no Government will allow drugs to be dispensed to 15 year olds. Take drugs illegally at your own risk.

Precisely the point. Whilst she would've scored either way it would at least be harder to score if legal whilst concurrently being of known purity and dosage. Legalisation absolutely would have prevented this. Not the way it "should" work cos she'd still be underage, but as with booze we know that is hardly a major obstacle if determined. The difference is in knowing what you are taking. Nice to see a decent proportion of the Heil's commenters acknowledging this fact. Shame they still patronise a paper which espouses only the views of its most extreme conservative readership cos the comments can often be surprisingly sane.

PS: Gotta <3 misuse of the term "so called" - always a good indicator of basic intellect.

Must've been very experienced or daft to just drop half a gram without taking a smaller dose first.

Full marks to this woman for recognising what the real problem is: her daughter was a Casualty of Prohibition.

In Juliestan (TM), ecstasy would be sold legally in a 2-pill pack; with a small pill containing 1 mg., and a larger pill containing 100 mg. You would take the 1 mg. first; it would be enough to set off an allergic reaction if you were sensitive, but would still be mild enough to be dealable-with at home for most, with only a minority requiring professional medical help. If you felt O.K. after an hour, you would take the 100 mg. and enjoy yourself. This would be explained as clearly as possible in the leaflet in the pack.

Anyone selling it any other way would be treated much the same way as ecstasy dealers currently are .....

She was fifteen though, wasn't she? Plus she was probably used to stuff half as pure, if not less.

I was still carelessly boshing that amount of street-purity MD crystal in one go in my late twenties. Which obviously isn't clever - quite the opposite in fact - but it's what a lot of reckless young people do.

I was boshing half a gram too Sammy - frightens me to think I could've copped for the 91% stuff. Although to be honest I didn't think MDMA had that lethal an LD-50. I thought if you had any tolerance you could bosh half a gram regardless of it's purity.

Yeah bodyweight would've played a part. It obviously went ok at the start because she was saying it was like a dream and better than the last stuff but then her body must've given out. Perhaps there was some medical reason unique to her behind it too. Presumably all her mates took the same stuff in similar amounts.

I remember getting some "E pills" once. Took about 5 of them and after 30 minutes realised they wern't MDMA. I turned white, went rigid, vomited twice and shit myself once and then went back to normal.

You'd probably be fine on a 100% pure half gram Ismene. You'd be in some state, but I'd be willing to be bet you'd survive with nothing more than a chewed up mouth and a stinking comedown.

Thatd be nuts.. Bet my eye balls would be rolled rattled loose, tripping my tits off, jaw off its hinges

Can't imagine.

A friend of mine once split & baggy & licked up the whole gram of molly in it. I doubt it had much MDMA in it mind.

To fried/lazy to read through the replies but I applaud the woman for seeing what the problem is & calling for change. I think it is a much deeper rooted problem than just prohibition, it is also because of the poor advice that is given out about drugs on the whole. That is to say no real advice & just scaremongering. Unfortunatly, this has been instilled into the public psyche & people won't hear otherwise now.

This rings a very loud bell... but don't recall the precise figure. It's enough to really annoy many a dealer though.

Depends if you're on about how much MDMA Freebase or MDMA Hydrochloride. You can have 100% pure MDMA hydrochloride, which by weight is 13% hydrochloride, but as they're bonded as a chemical compound so it can be said we have 100% pure MDMA HCL. It's not a 'mix' of hydrochloride and MDMA, they combine into one molecule!

100% pure MDMA Freebase would be a caustic alkaline oil!

The same could be said for any drugs, Cocaine HCL is a certain percentage HCL, but you don't see people harping on that there's a maximum percentage it can reach that is below 100% (99.5% if we're being realistic

And holy shit talk about a megadose, even I wouldn't take half a G. Most I ever bombed in one was 300mg by accident, I had heavy tolerance and I was a mess.

Too true.

Purity alone isn't everything; you also have to consider bioavailability.

A molecule of a hydrochloride salt of an alkaloid is going to be heavier than a molecule of the free base, and other salts (such as acetates or sulphates) even more so, especially if there is water of hydration involved (if a salt is described as being, for example, a decahydrate, that means that each molecule of the drug is accompanied in the crystal lattice by ten molecules of water. Dihydrocoeine tartarate crystallises as a hemihydrate; you can't have half a molecule of water in practice, but two molecules of DHCT can share one molecule of water between them, and the maths works out just as though the formula contained whatever an imaginary molecule of HO0.5 might look like); so there will be fewer molecules per milligram.

But, and depending on the route of administration, only a certain proportion of those molecules will actually do anything. This is the bioavailability; which sometimes can be improved by slight changes in the structure of the molecule, such as conversion of free base to a salt or a substitution of a side chain away from the main fuctional group. And the product of purity times bioavailability is what ultimately matters in determining how much of the drug you will end up absorbing. 50% purity at 90% bioavailability is still way better than 90% purity at 10% bioavailability.

It's a similar situation with cooking vegetables; cooking destroys vitamins, but it also destroys the cell walls that prevent the body from absorbing them. Undercooking can therefore leave fewer molecules of vitamins accessible to the body than cooking for a little longer and so giving the body a better chance of absorbing the surviving vitamin molecules.
