Inside Llewyn Davis

dingy movie. whole thing feels like the homes he couch crashes at. overall the movie is nothing. not all that entertaining of a take on life. the road trip is the best segment. the initial beating is the best shot. that's my favorite aspect of the reprise. the assailant is my favorite character. "what you do."

out of context, the repeat beating could be a comment about alcoholism.

I can't really disagree about its cinematic qualities, which are about standard for a CNN documentary, but I thought it was highly effective as investigative journalism. The idea implied by the neurologist -- that the emotion processing limbic system of Killer Whales' brains' is more elaborately structured than that of our own, and so there's a sense in which in being made captives they may feel isolation, the grief of familial separation, and homicidal psychosis to a degree of intensity we cannot fathom -- was especially heartbreaking and angering to me in light of what was shown of Sea World's callous, profit-driven whale care policies.

@ mr scagnattie full metal jacket is my all time favorite war movie! That viet sniper chick can never be forgotten!

I just finished watching 300 Rise of An Empire and as always, very entertaining and Artemisia captured my heart damn that girl is hot!!

Did you ever see The Thin Red Line? Full Metal Jacket is definitely one of the better war movies. However, earlier this year I saw The Thin Red Line and was very impressed with it. I think it's the best war movie I've ever seen. It came out the same year as Saving Private Ryan and they were both WWII movies, one with Germans the latter with Japanese. Saving Private Ryan seemed to overshadow it even though I think The Thin Red Line is a superior film. Worth checking out if you haven't seen it yet
 
the girls and i went to the weekend premiere of "the fault in our stars" today. i psyched myself up for the film and convinced myself that i wasnt going to cry. how wrong i was. throughout the second half of the film all you could hear were muffled cries and wet sniffles echoing throughout the cinema room and as the credits rolled, noone dared to move an inch. i too took a moment to (hopefully) remove the running mascara from under my eyes and look somewhat presentable as exiting. a beautiful film that was very true to the book and a wonderful adaptation of the story. loved it.

Yes I have seen thin red line and Saving Private Ryan. Did you like Letters from Iwo Jima? Jarheads?

This is probably off topic but I just remembered the movie The General's Daughter with John travolta and Madeleine Stowe.
 
The General's Daughter was a pretty heavy movie what with it centered around a rape case and all. Never saw Letters from Iwo Jima. I thought Jarheads was pretty cool. I thought the scenes shot in the burning oil fields were real cool. There doesn't seem to be too many movies about the early 90's Desert Storm war. Jarheads covered it well.

The Hurt Locker was a real cool movie about the current Iraq war. Plus I like Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie
 
The Thin Red Line is my favorite war movie as well Carl. Something about it just captures the absolute horror and hopelessness that the pacific theater must have been.

cool. i find the first half is great and the second half is not that great.

have you seen apocalypse now? pretty much the only movie about the war in vietnam as far as i am concerned :)

so many unforgettable scenes in apocalypse now. martin sheen has to be in my top 3 favorite actors, that one stare he does and that look in his eyes.. I fell in love with him after watching Badlands. not really a fan of war movies but it has to be my favorite no doubt.

I have never thought that I would enjoy this horror movie!!! So for those of you horror movie fanatics I assure you that you will like this ;)
 
Persepolis

this film is meant to be a more accessible copy of the graphic novel. the adaptation is only compromises. i assume the second half is derived from the sequel. not that it matters as it's in all aspects inferior to the book, but i liked the first half more.


Her

this was a letdown. for a science-fiction movie, it didn't really invest enough in it's world. how these relationships were perceived was the closest to interesting, but it was half-baked. insipid and the main character is effeminate in a way i found grating.


The Way Way Back

the cast far exceeds the script. it's overall a bland, formula movie. i'm assuming the only dialogue that isn't horribly stilted is edited in performance. sam rockwell and friends have funny moments.


Romantics Anonymous

stamped out to like Amélie. certainly not saying Amélie started the quirky european romance. i do think its resulted in an influx of thoughtless genre flicks. in the same sense that The Ring did. this one's about anxiety and romance.


The Station Agent

i didn't dislike this movie. i don't really remember anything about it, but it's important i remember i've already seen it.
