RIP Rik Mayall

culminating?

drop dead fred was released over 20 years ago.

alasdair

But that was still a decade after the young ones. I remember when I first saw Bill Hicks after a decade of the young ones and fucking blackadder. What a breath of fresh air.

The Young Ones - broadcast 1982-1984
Drop Dead Fred - 1991

If you're going to be an asshole, at least get your facts straight.

9 years is close enough to a decade isn't it? Anyway it wasn't as if there was any massive change in his material after Drop Dead fred was there. Bottom was after Drop dead fred and he was pulling the same schtick in that.

Incidentally I did think he was a nice guy and I liked him in bad news but the young ones really stank like shit. And you always had to suffer cunts quoting the young ones in the playground - just like the monty python bores of the previous generation.

9 years is indeed almost a decade...

Incidentally I did think he was a nice guy.

I'm not far from Barnes & I know a gardner who did some one-off fencing work a few years ago (probably about 10) for these guys & by his account Rik Mayall was as funny in real life as on TV but also a true gent.

I don't care what people quote; people quote bill hicks, the Simpsons and Shakespeare to the point of them all sounding like clichés - but personally I still like and enjoy all of the above.
Whether people do or don't like a tv show or an actor is subjective and totally a matter of taste.
I suppose what bothers me is people commenting in tribute threads specifically to slag off or denigrate the person in question.
The occurrence of this in bluelight lately has been a bit of an eye-opener (to me, anyway).
Really, besides getting a reaction - what's the point?
If the death of the person in question doesn't mean anything to you, why bother saying anything? It reminds me of reading some of the crap that gets posted in the comment sections of online tabloid 'news' articles. Armchair critics...cheap shots - meh.

(probably about 10)

Close enough to a decade then? :)

I always thought he wasted himself a bit - Kevin Turvey was a lot better than the young ones. But once he hit on that childish persona and realised it was popular he just repeated it until it annoyed the living fuck out of you.

No, I'm not slagging the man, I'm slagging his work. Big difference. He wouldn't have wanted everyone licking his arse and saying it smelled nice.

Am I saying something so outlandish here? That he repeated the same act for decades? Didn't anyone else notice it? Are you saying you actually liked drop dead fred?

Didn't see drop dead Fred, so I can't comment on his performance in it.
I'm not saying you're not entitled speak your mind or have an opinion. No artist is above criticism, but neither is any forum post.
I don't give a fuck about the vast, vast majority of "celebrity" or entertainer deaths - I just don't personally understand the need to post about disliking someone's work when they've just died. I'm referring to all of the Shulgin denigrators that came out of the woodwork recently as well, so I'm not specifically attacking you. I'm commenting on more than just your post.
Just seems like a bit of an asshole thing to do.
Is that so outlandish an observation?

Now...where was I?
Ah yes - virgin

I don't think it denigrates the man at all. He needed to feed a wife and 3 kids so he churned out the same money-making shit for 30 years. Nothing wrong with that at all - I've done shit jobs to pay the bills too.

I didnt say you denigrated him - but you're saying (at least some of) his work is shit.
Fair call, I don't happen to agree, but whatever.

My 'wonderful, generous, foul-mouthed and hysterical' father: daughter pays tribute

The family of Rik Mayall have paid tribute to "the man, the myth, the legend", calling him "wonderful, generous, foul-mouthed and hysterical"

Rik Mayall’s family have paid emotional tribute to the comedian, calling him a "wonderful, generous, foul-mouthed and hysterical" father who will never be forgotten.
Bonnie Mayall, his youngest daughter, called her father her "idol" as she posted a favourite photograph online.
Her sister Rosie and mother Barbara also published recent family pictures on Mayall, in tribute to the 56-year-old who died on Monday.
Bonnie, 19, said her father was “loved not only by my family, but by many many others”.
“We will never forget him and neither will the world,” she wrote on Facebook.

I hate to say it but I'm with Ismene here. He's not saying "Fuck that guy. I'm glad he's dead". He's just daring to say that he didn't like all of his stuff. Quite an easy/natural thing to do when there's post after post about how great his work was while you're sitting there thinking "I didn't like it". We're not at his funeral, no-one is going to be incredibly upset at a comment on the guys work that isn't gushing praise.

I disagree right enough. I loved The Young Ones, Bottom, most of The Comic Strip stuff. I don't think I've ever seen Drop Dead Fred tbh.
