Laughing gas is used to relieve the pain of childbirth - but could it be the answer to depression, too? That's the suggestion behind a study testing the use of nitrous oxide - known as laughing gas - for low mood. Previous research has shown mixing the gas with oxygen can ease the symptoms of depression within hours or even minutes; antidepressants can take weeks. It's thought the gas blocks a brain chemical that could play a key role in the problem. Now this is being tested in a clinical trial.

The standard treatment for depression is antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These are said to work by increasing levels of the brain chemical serotonin, boosting mood. But they do not help everyone and some research has suggested that for mild to moderate depression they work no better than a placebo. Even when antidepressants do work, they can take weeks to have an effect. However, U.S. research suggests the brain chemical glutamate - involved in memory, learning and cognition - may be involved in depression.

Glutamate is a neurotransmitter - a chemical that passes messages from one nerve cell to another. It locks on to a receptor in the brain. Depression has been linked to glutamate's chronic overstimulation of this receptor (known as NMDA). Nitrous oxide - a weak anaesthetic used in dentistry and childbirth - is thought to block these receptors.

In a trial at Washington State University, patients will breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, or a placebo, for one hour. The severity of their depression will be assessed 30 minutes and two hours after each treatment. Previous research has shown that drugs which block NMDA can have a powerful effect on symptoms of severe depression. A study of 22 patients given the drug ASD6765 intravenously showed 32 per cent had improvements within 80 minutes.

Salvia, Ketamine, and now Nitrous... seems there's something special about dissociatives!

How long does the improvement last? Do you have to breathe it for an hour every day, or every couple hours?

I believe with ketamine treatments, the effects lasted for several weeks after the infusion, so it's possible this could somehow be viable.

Know how they used to give x-rays to every newborn, just "to be sure"?
I would give ketamine, salvia, and nitrous to every new mother, just to be sure.

I'm trying to imagine what it would be like for a woman to give birth in a k-hole. Now that would be some mind blowing stuff.

I didn't know salvia was a dissociative! I mean, the one time I really tripped off it was aweful, but that was years and years ago. Since then I've fallen in love with ket. And although back then I disliked DXM, I've also since fallen in love with it while using it to detox off heroin (worked like a miracle for that btw). And of course I've always loved N2O. And don't get me wrong, the three are the shit afa recreational use goes, but I find they provide me more of the sort of analgesic, anti-depression anti-anxiety effect that blows classic medications like opioids/opiates (although I am on methadone to begin with fwiw), benzos and ssri/snri used for those conditions out of the water.

So, maybe I should give salvia a try again? Any recommendations as to what type/ROA (how to properly smoke it)? Is it a dissociative in the same sense as n2o, dxm and ket, or in another? I am not like excited to try salvia again, even if technically a dissociative, it I have to endure the same experience again, albeit it only lasted like five minutes...

And btw sorry to get off track...

It's hard to classify, I consider it simply an atypical hallucinogen. Traditional dissacioatives are NMDA antagonists which salvia isn't.

Thanks for the info and tips folks! Yea, I'm down with the NMDA antagonist dissociative classics like DXM and ket. I specifically like them because I find their NMDA antagonist action extremely medicinal is used properly. Improperly the side effects can waaaaay outweigh the benefits, but I've worked with them enough to know where to draw the line depending on what I want to get out of them.

the only nthing i hated about nitrous was when the baloon would blow uo in my face

Maybe my doc can give me a tank of nitrous instead of the bipolar meds i'm on :D . I've tried nitrous for depression and i found it to help lift my mood for days after taking it. Ketamine works far better then nitrous though in my experience at treating depression.

Nor is N2O as far as understand it.

Salvia is a novel dissociative/hallucinogen through agonism of the k opioid receptor.l

Can anyone confirm that N20's disassociative action is mediated by some other way than NMDA antagonism? I'm 99% sure it has nothing to do with NMDA.

Try 3-meo-pcp at low doses, SLOWLY titrated upwards, it'll rock your world. Do it rectally or orally measured with a mg scale and 1ml oral syringe and be safe. At real low doses, the hypomania it induces is pretty fun. Most bipolar or cyclothymic people say they like their mania, and hypomania is a less crazy mania - and fun.
