Which type of Oxycontin is sold in England - OC or OP??

Being sat with a GP and a private DR whom also writes PX, I can, on behalf of them say that - you will, under no circumstances have your px filled by *ANY* UK doctor.

As a chronic pain patient living in the Netherlands, which I assume to have similar pain medication products marketed there are the following things that are prescribed:

weak opiates:
  • Tramadol (Zaldiar - mixed with Paracetamol / APAP, Tramadol 50 and Tramadol 100 Sustained Release tablets).
  • Codeine (10 mg and 20 mg Codeine HCl mixed with 500 mg Paracetamol / APAP, 8 mg Codeine phosphate tablets, 10 mg Codeine only tablets, 30 mg Codeine only tablets).
  • DiHydroCodeine (Co-drydamol 7.46 mg / 10 mg / 20 mg / 30 mg DiHydroCodeine mixed with 500 mg Paracetamol / APAP and 30 / 40 / 60 / 90 / 120 mg DihydroCodeine only tablets).

Common / strong opiates:
  • Morphine (MS-Contin 15 mg / 30 mg / 100 mg Morphine sulfate, Oramorph SR 30 mg / 60 mg / 100 mg Sustained Release tablets, Oramorph 10 ml/mg (10 mg) / Oramorph 5ml/mg (20 mg) oral lozenges).
  • HydroCodone (often found in combination with Paracetamol / APAP or Ibuprofen, not available in most European countries).
  • OxyCodone (available in original OxyContin formulation outside the US, also available in generic 10 mg tablets or 10 mg / 20 mg OxyNorm capsules. In the Netherlands, dosage forms of OxyContin are 5 mg (blue tablets) / 10 mg (white tablets) / 20 mg (pink tablets) / 40 mg (yellow tablets) / 80 mg (green tablets) / 120 mg (unknown color). These are all original OxyCodone ER tablets AFAIK, being scripted both 10 mg and 20 mg tablets (140 mg daily dosage). There may be OxyCodone with Paracetamol / APAP or Ibuprofen / Naproxen available outside the US but I have not encountered them IME.
  • OxyMorphone (Opana Immediate Release, Opana Extended Release, Numorphan (suppository and injectable solution).
    [*HydroMorphone (1 mg / 2 mg / 3 mg / 4 mg / 8 mg tablets).

There are other strong opiates / opioids available like Fentanyl, Methadone or Suboxone but you will be less likely to be scripted them for (severe) pain. Also, there are non-opioid analgesics available like Aspirin / Paracetamol / Diclofenac / Ibuprofen / Ketoprofen / Meloxicam / Piroxicam etc. A quick search on Wikipedia will help you out here,

Hope to have helped with this list, send me a PM if you want to know more about the OxyCodone formulations available where I live (the Netherlands). :)

Yeah but he didn't say how much, and oxycodone is prescribed in the UK, not just for cancer and terminal illness.

^^ Hydrocodone is actually not licensed for prescription in the UK so is not available here even on private prescription afaik. Never heard of oxymorphone being prescribed either but is the kinda thing that would be so incredibly restricted I doubt I'd know anybody who would come close to qualifying. It was like pulling teeth to get a morphine script for terminal cancer - multiple organ, horribly painful terminal cancer (as if there's another form - was pretty frikkin vicious though) - for somebody rather close to me. Even then only right at the very end. Had to get by on co-codamol and pregabalin up until the last couple of months. Never underestimate the callousness of British doctors - or rather their political overlords - when it comes to pain meds :|

Exactly. As said above, I've been prescribed Oxycodone for back pain...

If the reason is legitimate with proof thereof, then there wont be a problem. Simply walking into a GP's office and saying 'I need some Oxycodone because I've been in a lot of pain with my <body part> instant release capsules would be great, thanks' is obviously not going to wash... Legitimate reasons for legitimate medications, will.

I used to buy 20mg oxynorms off this girl with sickle cell anaemia for for £2 a pop. Was like winning the lottery!

Lucky lucky, tbh I think I used to pay slightly less than £2. IIRC I think I used to pay £50 for a box of 28 so she could get a gram of charlie, can't remember exactly for shit though, it was something like that.

£60 for a box of 100 - you can more or less name a price when it's given for free by the bucketload. Why the hell they are so all or nothing about it I have no idea. This is the ex-husband of the person mentioned above who wasn't even given morphine for cancer until the bitter end. Different county, different local health practice, different prescribing views. The NHS is a fine thing but really could do with a bit of consistency :\

My prescription is oxycontin 60 mg b.d. I have a case history of 5 years, I have legitimate prescriptions, DR contact and specialist contacts, I am not waltzing into a DR with no prescription stamped box or documentation saying 'Hi im a tourist and in lots of pain can I have some medication". Also Rybee, the reason I cant get the full amount from my Dr is the prescribing restrictions in this country on quantity and a severe fuckup on my DR's behalf on the amount he calculated that I needed, it is shy of four and a half weeks. My Dr is also 'away on holiday' till a weekend before I leave - he is only in once a week - and wont be able to fill a script that large. The only way possible is to have him write out something, and prescribe me the one box of each he is allowed to. He was relying on my old DR to supply half of whats required, wrote a letter and everything, literally their practice is accross the road but the old dr refuses to prescribe to anyone anymore apparently. So I'm fucked. I feel like cancelling this fucking holiday or putting a bullet in my head. The way that legitimate patients are treated is disgusting in Australia and it seems like its going to be the same in England, with the Dr saying 'but why didnt you sort this out before'.... maybe due to other people's mistakes and not mine! but it seems like they wouldnt believe a word I say. Being a pain patient and travelling more than two weeks seems like a big fucking no no in this experience. And this was suppose to help me with my mental state, reinthuse myself about life and trying to get better and live with my illness. Ha more trouble than its worth it seems. The reason I see a Dr who is only there one day a week and always late? because virtually none prescribe to pain patients in this country and those that do usually kick you out after a few months of taking your case on when they get frustrated with not being able to 'fix you'.

Thanks, unfortunately I wont be visiting there, been on oxycontin since a bad spinal and hip injury a few years back. Thank you though.

This response was suppose to be for you, in refrence to all of the messages you wrote above in this forum (not just the quoted one) and not Owen-owen-MK2.

My prescription is oxycontin 60 mg b.d. I have a case history of 5 years I shall print out relevant docs, I have legitimate prescribed boxes of my two strengths with my prescription sticker on the front, my DR contact I will get a note from, I am not waltzing into a DR with no prescription stamped box or documentation saying 'Hi im a tourist and in lots of pain can I have some medication". Even with all that will they drop me down to some other medicine?

If they drop me down a medicine notch for a half month presciption requirement I dont know what do do but cancel my holiday rather than risk severe pain, withdrawal, anxiety, and depression not to mention a ruined holiday.

This has only just occurred to me but if you're only away for a week and a half why are you not just taking your meds with you?

This has only just occurred to me but if you're only away for a week and a half why are you not just taking your meds with you?

Im not away for a week and a half, I'm away for just over two months, this is due to my Dr's miscalculation, and my trip coinciding right with the oc/op change, I got so ill on op that my Dr said to stay on oc till I get back, though that means having to go to different chemists to try and find the last stock, which has been difficult and is why a regulation script cant be written = no pharmacy has more than one box, where regs. only provide two boxes, this and other issues mentioned above mean I am out of medication for four and a half weeks, or maybe to two depending on how things are with my next appointment (four days before I leave) and what he can do = due to restrictions writing scripts in this country and the shortage of medicine the most I will be able to get is half of whats needed, leaving me the week to two weeks and a half out of medicine, like I said depends on my appointment as to how much I will be short but I will be short as its impossible for him to write that much when from now till I leave he is only in the surgery one day, the appointment day, it was his miscalculation not mine and his unannounced holiday right before mine when I need to be planning this stuff that has caused the problems.... I have gone to different Drs and explained this over here but I have not had luck, despite a letter from him explaining things and my flight invoice to prove dates.

Get a cheap flight to holland from the uk and pick up a script?

Is it any easier in France? I heard natropaths can write scripts? I will be going to france, but due to tight planning im not sure if I can get to holland, is it much easier in holland? like I said, i will have documentation of my proof of being on them, and being a legitimate pain patient.
