Self-proclaimed ‘homeless advocate’ and ‘anarchist’ John Langley had a problem in his place of business Thursday afternoon.

A man had gone into the bathroom of his restaurant, Red & Black Cafe, and overdosed on heroin.

Langley wanted to get help for the man, so he dialed 9-1-1. ”We don’t allow police in here so we can totally accommodate the fire department and other emergency personnel,” Langley told a 911 dispatcher, “Not police, though.”

“I’m required to send everybody,” the dispatcher said.

“OK, well, if the police try and come in here,” Langley replied, “There’s gonna be another problem.”

Langley said that the paramedics arrived and quickly went in to treat the man. The man was hospitalized and released later, with no charges filed.

Had the police actually gone inside we could have witnessed an entirely different scenario.

If you are in the Portland area, go show John Langley some love and buy a cup of coffee from him; unless you are a police officer that is, as Langley made headlines back in 2010 for asking an officer to leave after he bought a cup of coffee.

That's totally righteous. Do they not have, like what do they call them maybe 'good samartian' laws were they don't charge ppl when 911 is called for OD, there?

John Langley, thank you for what you did. I wish more people would act in that manner towards such a situation.

The pigs are definitely not to be trusted IME.

Again, for what it's worth, thank you so much, and please don't stop.

If I didn't live on the other side of the continent, I'd definitely come to buy a coffee and shake your hand.

Thank you sir.

Awesome. Id definitely go have a cup of coffee with this guy except he's half way round the world from me.

Can you refuse to let police into you place of business? What if there is an emergency?
If I kicked out like a bus driver or city worker from my cafe couldn't they sue me the same as if i kicked a guy because he was black? Not that I like cops just wondering. I have always been against those fancy nite clubs with dress codes I kind of think its discrimination. I sort think you should have a good reason to not let someone in or kicking them out, otherwise how soon until you just kick people out based on say race or because they are ugly or fat? There are 10 thousand guys the exact opposite of this guy who discriminate against homeless people in their establishments that use the same sort of "it's my store and I kick out whoever i want" attitude.

I believe you have the right to not serve someone, regardless of the reason.

It's just that.. some reasons may end up backfiring (e.g. racism, homophobia, etc.)

Cops are violent people. It's their job and role in society; to have the monopoly on violence.
Of course you should be able to decide whether or not violent agents of the state are welcome - or allowed - onto the premises of your business.
This guy is inspiring. What a remarkably considerate thing to do; somebody ODing is not a crime to be investigated by the police - it is like making suicide illegal and charging people that survive attempts on their own lives.
It was a medical emergency, not an emergency requiring police attention, as no offence against people or property was committed.

Police exist there to protect and serve, not rule over and bully the community. Not even (or especially not) people on the fringes of society.
However it is because they so often do act beyond -or inappropriately within - their role that it is heartening to see citizens vocalising their desire not to interact with police. It is a fair call - and one I've made enough times myself.
"If you're looking for trouble, call the police."

Any lawyer with half a brain will tell you that the one way to make any situation worse is to bring the cops into the situation. That just doesn't go for drug od's either but rather just about any situation. If you want shit to get fucked up rather quickly just get the cops involved.

Well, you have the right to refuse service to anyone.

You do not have to call the cops if you can handle a situation on your own.

I am surprised that this guy pulled that off in that manner. He probably could have been a bit less confrontational and just said he needed an ambulance.

Still, that guy has balls of steel. I respect that. I avoid the police like the plague, so I probably would have done the same thing.

I am going to have to look into the laws regarding this issue as I would not want even want the police to come into a store I owned.

Thankfully, most states have good Samaritan laws, but not mine as of yet. I know the law is going to be passed soon though.

The government cannot regulate private businesses that do not receive government funding legally. It's why there's an odd college or moose lodge here or there that bans a certain race or people of certain creeds. It's rare because beyond being completely ignorant, it tends to look bad in today's society to be discriminatory.

In this instance, however, I'm pretty cool with the guy doing what he did, since his reasoning was not based on something the officer has no control over, such as race or sexual preference.

Yup, BC if you've been in that situation before the cops almost always show up before the EMT and if it deep nodding or oding that's prob cause to open ur car or shit prob even break a window. They just want to save you so they can find ur drugs AMD charge you with them. I don't know about other places but if u report an of cops are there in a heart neat like oooo drugs!!!! Let's go thru their pockets AMD block the medics til we find something incriminating. Don't mind me, happened to me once and they cops were actually physically blocking the EMT guys while they searched me AMD the truck I was in

Luckily I had another bl er with me and he's yelling at the cops to move plus he his all the shit. Practically saved my life that night

I think the United States needs federal "Good Samaritan" laws as well as the legalization/decriminalization of drugs.

How many of us would help a stranger in need who has OD'd on heroin? How many of us would rather risk whatever the worst case scenario could be in order to help save a stranger's life? I'm not trying to act in a holier-than-thou manner, but I know I wouldn't think twice about calling for help.

I respect people like this man so much for being so selfless. And I sincerely hope that his actions will be rewarded in some meaningful way.

Wish there were more people like him around.
