“Rape Drug” Cases Against Former Pro Football Star May Be Collapsing

Walter Armstrong | 5/16/14 said:
Today Darren Sharper, the former NFL star who played for the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints, will appear in an LA courtroom on charges of rape. He has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer has said that the sex between him and his accusers was consensual. She is demanding that the court force the DA to hand over what she claims is exculpatory evidence that the DA has hidden from the defense.

Nine women in five states have accused Sharper of drugging them with Ambien and alcohol and then sexually assaulting them. The incidents took place between fall 2012 and January, when he was arrested.

Yesterday, the DA in Miami announced that he was declining to press rape charges, a development suggesting that the evidence in the Florida case has more holes in it than previously thought. How this might impact the rape charges in California and Nevada is not yet known.

As an alleged serial rapist, Sharper is charged with carrying out the crimes in exactly the same way. In each assault, Sharper has been accused of knocking out his victims with a “cocktail” of alcohol and Ambien (zolpidem), the popular sleeping pill that Sharper has long been prescribed to treat insomnia related to head injuries he sustained on the football field. He reportedly took the drug on a nightly basis. He had 20 Ambien pills on him when police arrested him.

In recent years Ambien has replaced Rohypnol and GHB as the go-to “rape drug” because it is easy to get a prescription (with refills) and it is a cheap generic. An unfortunate irony is that the characteristics that made Ambien a breakthrough sleep aid when it hit the market also make it especially conducive to getting away with sexual assault. The drug is fast acting and its effects can be sudden, almost like a light switch being turned off. Because it leaves the body quickly, toxicology tests can identify it only if conducted within 24 or, at most, 48 hours—and rape victims often do not report assaults that fast. Ambien can also induce amnesia. Alcohol, a depressant, increases the sedative potency of the drug.

Ambien has gained notoriety for occasionally causing people under its influence not only to sleepwalk but also to exhibit bizarre behavior. The “Ambien defense” has been used successfully in cases of murder, assault, drunk driving and other crimes. This could further complicate building a solid case against Sharper.

As someone who's long been prescribed Zolpidem and, frankly, enjoys using it to get a nice little benzo like buzz without having to worry about failing a drug test once in a while, I can honestly say I have never even begun to think about how I could or simply how it could be used, like GHB and Rohypnol, especially in combo with alcohol to increase it's sedative and hypnotic effects, as well as make any amnesia it's use causes more severe.

I don't know, but I find that kinda of strange that I've never given any thought to such idea, considering my ex and I regularly enjoyed over indulging in zolpidem when we wanted to get loose - she actually really enjoyed the recreational effects of z-drugs. Our zolpidem sessions would always culminate in her breaking one of my nice glass pipes or me breaking an expensive old Chinese tea pot, us then having crazy sex, I think because of our generally low inhibitions together being completely and utter erased by the drug, and finally our out together/on top of each other, of course.

Iono, well, I guess it reassures me a bit of my humanity considering I never made the connection that, given our experience with the drug, especially the crazy inhibited sex, I never even began to thought about how zolpidem resembled GHB and Rohypnol. [/pointless_discussionofmine]

These articles trouble me 10 000 people will read it and say how horrible it is. Then one evil guy with Ambien with read it it will give him ideas. They could have just said "sleep aid" instead of naming it. When these articles started appearing about GHB it caused idiots to try it, its very chicken and egg as to what came 1st, the hysterical articles or rape attempts.

" recent years Ambien has replaced Rohypnol and GHB as the go-to “rape drug”"

False^ The go to date rape drug is alcohol. I like how they make these statements and don't back them up with any data. The date rape drug thing has been mostly hysteria with very few actual confirmed cases of it happening. Ambien may be different, but if it is easy to kill victims when mixed with alcohol, like GHB and most sleeping pills, it won't take off. And there will be lots of dead bodies to confirm it is happening which never happened with GHB or roofies.
Make pills that won't dissolve, or give them a strong taste. Add another chemical to the pill that is detectable a week later. I hate to see medicine get banned for legit users who just want to sleep.

I am really getting sick of this pathetic myth of the date rape drug. All of those skanks were just drunk according to the police drug tests they took after reporting it. It was consistent in Canada, Britain and the US. It was a moral panic designed to destroy the a drug that naturally occurs in all our bodies that could replace the alcohol industry and save millions of lives, GHB.

Not only did it discredit the safest sedative known to man but now people can absolve themselves of responsibility for binge drinking by pretending they were drugged.

It is literally thousands of times safer than alcohol. No liver damage, cancer risk or digestive tract damage. The withdrawal isn't fatal like all other GABA-ergic drugs either. It isn't even noxious to taste in your mouth like booze. The list of benefits over alcohol is endless.

It doesn't interrupt the phases of sleep. It is a miracle sleep aid. There is no hangover or dehydration etc. it is cheap to make as well.

Nice post poledriver. I enjoyed reading that :)

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up there. W/d from GHB can very well be fatal. And the fact it doesn't have any kind of strong taste, unlike ethanol, can actually make it more dangerous because the dose response curve is so incredibly steep, also unlike ethanol. Since you can't taste the difference between 2mL and 6mL, the latter causing a terrible coma and the former causing a nice inebriation, you can see my point. I'm not saying it's more dangerous or nasty than booze - I don't think it is - but frankly I don't think it's all that much safer (although yes I would argue it's technically safer, but like I said not really by much).

p.s. I loooooove women from oz =D 8)

^i agree with this. w/d can be fatal and MUCH easier to overdose on. personally i would have a very difficult time overdosing on alcohol, i've drank as much as fifth (750ml) in one sitting and while it was not a good experience i didn't have to go to the ER unless i fell or something. GHB would be a breeze to OD on.

the way GHB is safer is if you get it pure and accurately measure each dose and use it long term the long term effects of alcohol would be far more brutal and damaging.

If it was legal and regulated metered, watered down doses with distinctive colouring would be available. Grain alcohol is fairly easy to overdose on as well if you can keep it down.

I would like to see a source for GHB reliably causing fatal seizures etc. in withdrawal because I have never heard this.

Toothpastedog, Did you mean mL of a saturated solution of it in water? It is a solid substance.

It is still thousands of times safer when long term use along with relative side effects are considered. No one would ever drink again outside of Christian ceremonies and millions of lives would be saved if people actually compared the 2 drugs. It is propaganda to try and say it isn't much safer. For a drug with equivalent intoxicating effects it is hard to get any safer.

^the dose response curve is NOT irrelevent no matter what form it's in, because we've all known those who like to push it a little (i'm one) and you could end up passed out in a shopping mall or something from just a tiny bit more.

Not overdosing. Dying. This is not easy with grain alcohol.
Edit: I thought it would be easy as well when I first started researching these kinds of things.

^no it's not. easy to end up in handcuffs, injured (or injured and killed) or otherwise stupid shit, but dying from an alcohol OD? na. sure it's possible but that would require drinking after you're throwing up, passing out, etc. IMO

[edit: this was quite unnecessary]

I obviously meant OD with a chance of death. The overwhelming majority of GHB "overdoses" involve someone simply becoming non-responsive for a few hours in a coma-like (it is not technically a coma btw) state that goes away on its own. Neither drug is particularly easy to actually die from in overdose. I have, like you treezy, surprised myself with the amount of booze I could drink at one time (although do not remember finishing it all) without dangerous complications, other than the piss/stumble/blackout.

GHB is more likely to knock you out for a few hours rather than have you get in trouble/ piss everywhere without remembering what you did the entire night when you overdo it a bit. Assuming no one is robbing/raping you when you are knocked out I would argue that this makes it safer than booze because you are not doing anything.

I've never had GHB or any of the similar versions, but I thought it was supposed to taste horrible?

Anyway I just read this in the news and it makes me a bit mad, what a scumbag, he doesnt get jail time (suspended) and that guy in the other article that sold cannabis cookies and oil or whatever in texas might get a huge jail sentence, so not right, here's the story -

Judge Kurt Eisgruber tells Mandy Broadman to forgive her rapist husband David Wise and move on

A WOMAN was left stunned as a judge gave her husband a suspended sentence for drugging and raping her and advised her to forgive him and get over it.
Mandy Broadman, of Indianapolis, testified that she found three videos on her now ex-husband David Wise’s phone of the pair having sex which she did not remember participating in. She also said she woke up once with a pill dissolving in her mouth.
Broadman, who was married to Wise for 12 years and with whom she has two children, said she made copies of the videos but didn’t take them to police until 2011 because he was sending threatening texts to her after their divorce.
A jury convicted Wise last month of one count of rape and five counts of criminal deviate conduct.

However despite the crimes punishable by six to 20 years in prison Marion Superior Judge Kurt Eisgruber gave Wise a suspended prison sentence and eight years home detention.
Broadman told the IndyStar that it was what the judge said while handing down the sentence that made her feel like she had been “sucker punched in the gut.”
“The judge looked at me before he gave the final decision,” she said. “I was told that I needed to forgive my attacker and move on. I received zero justice on Friday”

Marion County Deputy Prosecutor Courtney Curtis said the fact that Broadman was married to Wise should not discount the fact that he raped her.
“There is no difference when a woman knows her attacker and when she doesn’t,” Ms Curtis said. “I think it is important to remember that this crime is one that was committed in the home and so serving a home sentence in the home is not something this office would ever ask for.”

Wise is fighting for shared custody of the couple’s two children.
“He will continue to harass me and cause me as much pain in my life as he can,” said Boardman, who has since remarried.
