------------

A Sydney woman facing a marijuana possession charge in Bali has pleaded for her freedom, saying she has already told police the truth about drugs found during a raid this year.

Leeza Ormsby, 37, has been kept in a Bali police cell since February 12, when she was arrested at the scene of a drug bust.

She was finally charged on Tuesday, as police neared the time limit they could hold her without pressing charges.

The New Zealander cried and shielded her face from cameras as she was led from the prosecutor's office to a cell on Tuesday morning.

"I want to go home," she told reporters. "I've already told the truth. I've already said the truth."

Ormsby was charged with possessing a marijuana joint she allegedly admitted to having in her handbag when arrested at the scene of a drug bust at a villa on the resort island.

She has not been charged with possessing the MDMA and hashish found in the villa.

According to her lawyer, Ari Soenardi, the case has been prolonged because police have been trying to get Ormsby to admit to owning the other drugs.

She denies they are hers, saying she was only at the raided villa to pick up her laptop and towel.

Soenardi says she has admitted to owning the joint, which she bought from a person on the beach.

He told reporters on Tuesday his client was well but stressed about the media attention.

"The story has affected her family image," he said. "I hope the verdict will be the best and reasonable."

The charge carries a term of between four and 12 years in jail, prosecutor Ni Luh Putu Oka Ariani said.

"We have 20 days before handing over to the court and that could be extended for another 30 days," she said.

Once the case is handed over to the courts a trial date will be set the following day.

Ormsby’s arrest in February came two days after Schapelle Corby was released on parole for drugs charges.

It's expected she will be taken to Kerobokan Prison, where Corby served more than nine years, later on Tuesday.

During the drugs raid Ormsby told police there had been a party at the villa but that her five friends had already left Bali.

Sydney musician Azaria Byrne has since come forward to say he was the one who booked the villa and that he believes Ormsby, whom he only met once, is innocent.

I think it is sad seeing ridiculous laws like this being enforced, even if it is stupid to do drugs in such a shithole (sorry if I offend anyone by saying that). I know I know, don't do the crime if you can't do the time, however this time the time does not fit the crime, at all. Anyway, it's sad and I hope she has a good lawyer and comes out ok in the end.

So silly...Do drugs in Indo and you take the risk.

Depriving anyone of their freedom (especially when they are non-violent and cooperative) for a FUCKING PLANT is a paramount example of humanity at its worst. What a fucking disgrace to logic.

This is beyond barbaric. A joint??? I bet it wasn't even a full gram ffs.

And I thought the UAE had severe punishments for marijuana possession. A relative of mine who sometimes travels to Dubai for business told me of a story where a tourist was caught with a little over 1g of weed, and the prosecution allegedly recommend he be sentenced to a minimum of 4 years in prison.

Meanwhile, you've got fruit-flavored tobacco being consumed on every other corner of that city by as much as 75% of the ethnic population.

It's obvious that propaganda can be extremely effective at conditioning society into viewing certain drugs as inherently evil. But do these people - especially the tobacco plant consumers - not realize that they are condemning a minority group of individuals to a long time behind bars solely because of their preference to consume another type of plant (cannabis sativa)?

I work with a lot of pot heads, and they are nice individuals. They don't seem work less diligently than those who don't smoke weed, and they are just as punctual. So what - they wanna smoke some weed after work to take the edge off of a hard day? Do they really deserve to go to prison for that? Good lord, what in the world happened back in the late 60's which caused Nixon to end up declaring war on drugs? Was it 'Nam? Was it all the smack-addicted soldiers coming back home with a habit?

How can you blame any soldier for using a mind-altering substance after the shit they've been through half way around the world from home? Worse yet - how can you put these American heroes prison after they risked their lives for their country? The American Dream has come and gone for them. In its place, the dream has manifested itself into a nightmare. How did I end up going off topic like that? Damn, that's my cue to stfu, my bad.

I have to agree that the sentences for drug obsession in that country are ridiculous. It's outrageous that you could be imprisoned for so long for a single joint, that's insane.

That being said however I think the tourist has been immensely stupid. If you know the country you're in has such severe punishments for drugs, why for fuck's sake would you risk it and buy some weed? More so a SINGLE joint, if you're going to risk it buy a truckload. What was she thinking? I'm not saying she deserves it, but if you go to such a country you would be an idiot to get involved with drugs and you should be prepared to accept the consequences. Again, I am not saying these consequences are just and correct, they are insane, but when you travel over there and do something like this you should also be prepared for the consequences.

I love my beer, but if I ever travel to Dubai you will not find me drinking alcohol there as I know the punishments for doing so are retarded over there and while I do not approve of that, I do respect it...

I doubt she will have to do that amount of time that it states, unless they get her for the rest of the drugs. You guys do realise she had the keys and walked into a room where there was 100 + grams of MDMA and more hash and scales in there. I'd like to know if she had MDMA in her system.

You go and visit Indo and you follow their rules or you face the consequences if caught. I was offered so many drugs there, it's hard to keep saying no all the time, they really pressure you to buy.

Hopefully she is out soon, unless they pin her with all the MDMA and hash and scales, then she is REALLY fucked.

All her DJ buddies swiftly left Bali and went back to Aus.

In Bali you do all the shrooms and alcohol you wont, but dont touch weed or other drugs. It's pretty simple. She took the risk and is paying the price, sadly.

Holy crap! This is why I'm scared to to go to other countries for vacation! Are the laws the same in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines?

This is the country where an 8-year old can spend his milk money on a few cigarettes at a corner shop every day and no one will bat an eye.

Gotta make that money

Indeed. Tobacco = taxes. And as long as they can make money on it they do not care one bit if it is unhealthy or even straight up deadly for the population. That's why they are so severe with drugs, as of now they can't tax them and anything that the population enjoys that doesn't bring in taxes is a no-no in the eyes of the governement. They're bastards but unfortunately that's the way it works...

There are homeless 4 year-olds in Jakarta and elsewhere who are smoking 1-2 packs a day.

A pack of cigarettes in Indonesia is about a dollar.

“Our cigarette prices are so low that even children can afford to buy them. That’s why the smoking epidemic is so massive.” - Tubagus Haryo Karbyanto, chief campaigner for the National Commission on Tobacco Control

^ And now in Australia I think a pack is about $22 and smoking rates are declining (I think). Quite a few people I know have given up smoking here because it is just so expensive now.

Alcohol seems to be going to the same way here too. A case of beer is no less than $40 where I am at, sometime $50-60 depending on the brand.

I've really got no sympathy. Australian's treat Bali like a brothel. If you can't respect their laws, don't go there. Simple. As barbaric as the drug laws are it's no secret that they have very harsh penalties. That being said, there is no way she'll do 4-12 years - that's just hyperbole.

I don't respect immoral laws anywhere, including in my home country.
Does that mean I simply shouldn't go to any country with immoral laws?

Not if you plan to break them, no. If you're a guest then you should respect your host. If you plan to go to another country to use it like a brothel and spit in the face of your hosts you deserve what you get.

Do you respect all the laws of your country? Does anyone?
(Serious questions.)

It's MY country. That's the difference.

wow.. is that for 24 beers? How much of all this is taxes on the products?
