Will heroin ever be legal in the US?

I googled 'legalize heroin' the other day and was surprised how many results I got and what certain people have said about this in the past. I think it should be legal OTC to anyone over 21 yrs old.

I think eventually there will be a big push to get it legalized in a decade or so, look at whats happening with pot now around the country...back when I was in school and went thru the DARE program, to even suggest one day recreational pot would be legal in some states would have been crazy, no one would have believed this, but its happening!

Whatever happens, I think its long overdue to end the 'war on drugs' it is a miserable failure. It is pretty bad when LE likes to talk about the high tech things they have to detect and stop drug distribution, but at the same time, the US is going thru a heroin epidemic, meaning more dope than ever before is hitting the streets, so something is not working!

I find it strange that when alcohol prohibition was in effect, it did not take long for them to realize it was not working and it was stopped, why is it taking them so long to recognize the same thing about drug prohibition? Doesnt make sense to me? I mean, the literal definition of the word insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, this is exactly what drug laws are doing...yet those in power dont see this...???
 
i think weed will be legal within time. heroin? no, never.

There's not enough ppl doing it (like with weed scale).

the best idea would be; government make ALL drugs legal, and have strict Good manufacturing processes and standard operating procedures in place to make the drugs, then do what u gota do to make them (more) safer. then let doctors (or pharmacist equivalent) sell to drug-users so we can get high without the massive dangers associated with using product that has been dangerously made in someone's kitchen or super-lab with no quality control what-so-ever.


But this will be talked about in 150 years more time when more persons are doing heroin. not big enough of deal yet.

we scream and cry out drugs like we used to scream and cry out witch-craft.
 
I am from the UK but I will chime in with a response. A while back the UK de-criminalised Cannabis be fore the semi legalisation all you could get on the streets was mediocre hash what we generally refer to as soap bar from Morocco. After it became de-criminalised all sorts of new and potent strains were hitting the streets. Young people were using the stuff which I thought was great by the way and some were complaining that Cannabis was making them schizophrenic and causing them all sorts of problems.

Because we live in such a small country people took note of this and soon the weed was demonized in the press and that was it a small few who could not handle there weed had ruined it for the rest of us.

Cannabis was a class C drug the lowest in terms of what the law would do if you were caught using once decriminalised if you were caught using it would be confiscated end of story. But now because of the new strains I.E skunk and its derivatives are now class B under the misuse of drugs act and harsher penalties go figure.

What I am saying is if Heroin were made legal some Idiot would OD and that would be the end of it. No one had died from a shot of whiskey but many have from a shot of Heroin. But on the other hand the Government would make so much money in taxes from it but currently we live in a nanny state just look at the smoking ban in public places. I cant see Heroin being made legal anywhere anytime soon

IDK, alot of people are on Heroin today, I think its kinda similar to all the people smoking pot back in the late 60s, pot was that generations DOC, today though, I think H is the DOC of todays generation, therefore, I think within the next 20-30 years, legalizing it will start being discussed more and more, and likely start on a clinic dispensing type set up, which would be great, cuz Im hoping to try pharma grade H at some point in my life.
 
You mean like heroin maintenance for addicts who have failed all other treatment I'm guessing right? It will never be widely legalized like weed but maybe through a strict program in the distant future.
 
This belongs in Drug Culture if it belongs on this site at all.
 
That is not the definition of insanity first of all. Second of all, there's actual reasons for pot to be legalized, its not all just because people like smoking weed.

I don't see how anyone could, in good conscience, legalize heroin. I could however see it being utilized and monetized by pharm companies just because that's what they do
 
Heroin is considered of not having any medical value.
But why is morphine then?

Heroin is more analgesic and potent, so that makes no sense.
 
Because heroin wasn't properly advertised when it came out and when they realized their original claim for what its use was wrong they schedule 1'd it. Morphine was marketed as an opiate pain killer not the non addictive completely safe drug to get off opiates.
 
What about Meth? Lol when I was using it on a daily basis it beat coffee or any other stimulant out of the park. Got shit DONE on that stuff! They should make Desoxyn legal not only for severe ADHD/ADD patients or obese people but for people that are chronically fatigued all the time like myself! That would be the SHIT!
 
Can we not just be grateful that marijuana is on the verge of legality in the States? Fucking heroin, the universe would not allow it to become legal, opium on the other hand I say legalize that shit ASAP. Heroin is legal in Portugal, no?
 
Marijuana sucks ass.. I prefer Meth anyday to be legalized.. at least pharmaceutical Meth like Desoxyn.. or shit even just plain ole dextroamphetamine like dexedrine!

Besides Dexedrine is way smoother than Adderall without any of the sides and it does the job to give you some pep and make running errands a blast!
 
I don't think that heroin will ever be legal in the United States of America due to epidemics in the 1940;s primarily of white middle class womens legs.

Therefore, the stigma will dissipate into a sort of lightly shaded social tolerance of harm reduction.

No, it's just decriminalized. But it's still not popular, let alone "seen" there that often.
But if you'd have a pound on you there I think they would be after you
 
Chances are there will be at least one legal opiate/oid in the United States eventually. I honestly think that the main push factor will be that it can't afford to continue to spend so much money and have such a bolstered police presence without turning into something that doesn't resemble democracy anymore.
 
^In America we have 2 legal opiods anybody can get: suboxone and methadone. Not too hard to get but you have to stay off other drugs for the most part at least early on when your getting tested.

On top of that in 49 states you can buy kratom which does have opiate-like effects and is used as an opiate substitute quite often.

If the government got rid of one or more of these three legal options for addicts the usage of street opiates increase as well as the number of people arrested for drug-related crimes.

There's also tramadol, which, while a prescription drug, is unscheduled in most states and therefore legal to possess.

To answer this thread's title, I think heroin will have a shot at legalization when you can bring that idea up without giving the majority of society panic attacks. It's nothing special--just another strong opioid--but the drug warriors have spent decades demonizing it. Somewhere in between twenty and thirty percent of users get addicted, but the most fanatical of them would have you believe that number is one hundred percent.

A key factor in this process will be exposure to heroin users who are able to exercise some measure of control over their usage. There are moderate drinkers, somewhat problematic drinkers, and severe alcohol addicts. The same dichotomy holds true for heroin, or any other drug. It will be necessary for the general population to understand that before any great degree of progress can be made.
