Heroin Did you feel physical pain whilst on heroin?

Hello :)

I was wondering how people feel about heroin being the ultimate painkiller? As in physical pain-wise.

If you are wondering, I am NOT about to start taking heroin for my chronic pain condition. I am not even contemplating it as my pain is relatively well managed for now.

It's just a burning question in my mind, being interested in drugs of all kinds (mainly psychedelics though) and having known quite a few people who use heroin over the years.

I am wondering - aside from the psychological effects of heroin, does it kill all physical pains as well? For example if you were on heroin would you feel the pain of say a broken leg? Is it a case of just the higher your tolerance the more you would need to take to achieve complete pain relief from an injury or chronic pain condition?

I mean quite severe pains. I know it is given in end of life care, although having worked in nursing homes I believe the dying are not given enough pain relief - some I saw are in severe pain and the docs will hold off until the final few days to even start oramorph!

I saw a documentary recently and a lady was walking around with a massive gaping hole in her neck , a wound / unhealed surgery of some sort. She was on heroin, she seemed to have a pretty large habit, and didn't seem to be in any pain whatsoever. The interviewer asked and she said no pain really. In my mind that was 8o . This started my interest in this.

Many thanks if you can answer, I tried googling but didn't get very far. I hope this is the correct section for this question and also I hope I can contribute to the site x

^^^^Yes, Heroin does kill pain.

IMO, it should be legalized for pain in the US.

opioids do work as analegsics but in general they don't numb you entirely... if you walk around with a fucked up leg or whatever it will still hurt you just won't care

I mean, yeah.. like any strong opiate, they will help numb the pain.. but don't get the wrong idea and think heroin is just this almighty pain killer where you can break your legs and not feel a thing. Hah. It'll keep you from screaming in agony.. but you're not just going to be right as rain. You still feel pain.. just not as intensely.

Some people think heroin or opioids are 100% effective as painkillers... they're often not the best choice for some sorts of pain in some people, especially when used alone. Strong opioids are often combined with other painkillers (acetaminophen, NSAIDs, dissociatives, certain stimulants, other anesthetics) for that reason. This is also why multi-action painkillers like tramadol/tapentadol were developed.

If you have to deal with serious, intense pain (childbirth, messy amputations, crush injuries etc - or emotional pain, funnily enough), even huge doses of fentanyl won't stop you from wailing in agony.

Also, food for thought: Just because someone says they're not hurting, doesn't mean they're not.

Well I know it still leaves pain signals but its definitely a very effective pain reliever out of all the opiates I find anyways. Me I always said whenever I shot a half g of dope that I could get hit by a bus right now and I wouldn't care but that may be an exaggeration.

Hmmmmm.....last summer I hopped off a chair and landed on the iron claw foot of a plant holder (the arch/heel of my right side.) I don't recall it hurting and if it did I probably just did another shot. However? I had done some real damage clear up into the ankle and so if I did feel pain I didn't give a crap. I was in a walking cast til September. I do not recall pain meds either. I do remember not wanting to go to the ER cause I may have been notable as an IV user and then if something really bad happened, here, if they know of usage, you're often denied any pain treatment unless it's surgical and such. Went to my family MD and she gave me morphine 30 irs. I had those forever and actually think the tinglies are a lot more fun than H....but then again, I like Ritalin, so what do I know anyway? :D

Ha yeah I'm pretty sure you'd still care as they were scraping you off the pavement. Often times, sudden painful injuries like that, are like an adrenaline shot.. they snap you right out of reality and whatever you are feeling. I've been high on dope before, and gotten bad broken bones, shit like that, and as soon as it happens, the overwhelming pain cuts through the dope high like a knife. Hah. It's like taking a shot of narcan minus the withdrawals.. after you chill out a bit and the initial shock and pain subsides, the opiates can kinda kick back in and you'll feel them again, helping in the pain.. but in the beginning.. you might as well not even be on them. So they definitely aren't these magic "feel no pain" drugs.

Opiates do block pain signals so in minor/moderate pain you may not feel much pain.
However in severe pain opiates like any other drug can only do so much.
Psychological effects of opiates mean that in effect your ability to tolerate pain is increased, rather then your ability to feel pain being removed.

I do believe it's a good pain killer, I've only used it once but my best friend is addicted to it and I've heard a lot from her about it and have a story (pretty stupid but I'll share it anyway).. the night I snorted heroin with her we decided to try and pierce her lip and never succeeded for whatever reason (I've pierced mine on both sides) but we spent about an hour jabbing needles into her lip and trying to get rings in there and whatnot and she was bleeding everywhere, her lip was swollen, and it's just the type of thing that would've been painful if she wasn't on heroin haha, she said she didn't really feel anything.
I also gave her a few of my vicodin once (vicodin are painkillers for those who might not know) and she said it felt a lot like heroin to her.

Thats strange because I know for a fact vicodin would not do shit for me, since ive been on H, vic are generally pretty weak despite the media always calling them powerful prescription pain meds! LOL

My ex-Gf got ahold of a bunch of vic ES a few years back and I was excited because she did not want them, said they bothered her stomach so she gave me the bottle to use, (about 60 pills), but after taking a few, I quickly realized they werent going to do me any good, I barely felt them and I took 5 right off the bat, I dont think anyone even sells them around here anymore, since H is so big around here now, no one is interested in vics anymore.

That's just what she told me.. I can't agree/disagree with her because I haven't even taken any yet. :P But it's actually vicoprofen (vicodin/ibuprofen) so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. Lol

Well Yes it is Morphine but Quicker although Shorting-Acting because of that.

I suffer nerve pain and heroin is not effective at all for that. I can eliminate most of my pain with other drugs though so I have some kind of shitty baseline of pain but it always hurts and sometimes I get breakthrough pain and everything will hurt almost as bad as if I had taken no drugs at all.

I don't think there is any painkiller that removes all pain for longer periods of time. You always get tolerance.

^
tolerance is the constant enemy of chronic pain patients!lol.

I also get nerve pain (trigeminal mainly) and paracetamol is more effective then dihydrocodeine at eliminating that pain.
Dihydrocodeine and pregabalin (high dose) is effective but i dont know if thats because it makes me high enough that im not bothered.

The problem with severe chronic pain is that you get so used to a constant background level of pain that its hard to tell when your not in pain.

There are different kinds of pain, and different doses of heroin are required to kill all pain. Some pain, such as headaches won't go away even if you OD on the stuff, well actually, that probably would take away the pain but you'd be left with an even bigger problem of being unable to breath.

Actually, for me anyway, H will get rid of a headache, if I have one before I use, and then use, I can feel the headache sort of fade away...its a great feeling!!

Thanks for all the responses :)

I am getting some idea of what you are all meaning. I also have been reading about chronic pain patients turning to heroin after being taken off their prescribed painkillers. Food for thought.

I can currently manage most of my pain using other methods, however the thought of it getting worse, or my body getting tolerant to painkillers , or even just the fact I'll probably be in pain for the rest of my life, I can understand why some people do begin using heroin for the pain.

I would be interested in any other or more opinions.
