Navy warship HMAS Melbourne makes second African drug bust - Over 2 Tonnes

Australian Navy sailors patrolling the coast of Africa have seized more than 1 tonne of heroin on a suspicious sailing boat.

The Navy estimates the street value of the heroin at $290 million.

Crew from HMAS Darwin boarded the wooden boat east of Kenya and discovered 46 sacks of heroin hidden among bags of cement.

The Navy says the drugs from the dhow were taken aboard HMAS Darwin.

The ship's commander Terry Morrison says the heroin seizure will put a dent in terrorist funding networks.

"These drugs have now been seized and are about to be destroyed," he said.

"It's well known that these drugs assist terrorist organisations through funding so that they can conduct violent acts.

"Today [HMAS] Darwin is proud to be able to remove these drugs from that funding stream."

The Navy ship is currently deployed on Operation Slipper.

It is part of the Australian Defence Force's contribution to the international campaign against terrorism, smuggling and piracy in the Middle East maritime security environment.

This area of operation encompasses an area of more than 2 million square miles including the Indian Ocean.

The drugs have been destroyed and will be destroyed...until someone big time criminal nius a bunch of it back lol. A vw bug weighs like a ton. Can u imagine a be made of Afghani smack lol? Reminds of the cjeech and chong movie when they drive the truck made of weed. I wonder what the purity was and if it was base or not. Sucks, that's a big ass load.

Isn't there a world shortage of narcotic analgesics? Couldn't they put the diacetylmorphine to better use, like using the stuff to make pharmaceutical grade morphine out of it? I agree, it's an enormous waste of "heroic medicine."

Or, what if they purified it, and sold it to nations which use diacetylmorphine as a prescription painkiller, or, for Heroin Assisted Treatment (e.g. Switzerland)? What a waste.

Although I'd probably shit myself in fear of being blown to bits of flesh by their artillery, I'd probably die before I'd allow a Navy warship to steal thousands of pounds of smack from me. Of course, they call it seizing or confiscating, even if they're out of their jurisdiction and in another nation's waters while doing it.

This is a war! Logic does not come into it!
Especially when the political leadership of the nation leading said Navy does all it can to prove how macho they are in battle (and all other areas).
Waste is the Western World's official addiction. The 'drug' thing just gets swept under the rug/sea unless some kind of point can be made in attacking the poor fuckers that need to be involved (on either end) of the drug trade to survive.

Not that I'm necessarily condoning heroin smugglers, but it's the basic economics of supply and demand (with black market profits thrown in to sweeten the deal).
Just say it's linked to Al-Qaida and nobody bats an eyelid.
 
If I was on board a boat with that much heroin, knowing I was going to be boarded by a heavily armed warship. I know exactly what I'd be doing, and it wouldn't be giving a fuck. They wouldn't be taking me alive, that's for sure.
