I’m an unrepentant hard drug user with an otherwise normal life

Loved the article. Loved the fact that she's not sorry about her habits. And I wish her the best - you go girl. Fuck the DEA, and the government and their double-standard bullshit. This was a good read.

I dont see the point to this article other than the author anonymously justifying her "hard drug use" that makes her sound hard.. cus shes like a minority or something. 8)

i like the content of the piece and think it sends a positive message but i dont consider that hard drug use certainly not on my scale

I agree. It's great if it helps break the stigma, but at the same time I wouldn't call her a hard drug user. Coke is totally socially acceptable as far as I know, and Vicodin is too. If she were doing meth or crack or heroin on weekends that would be another story. But I would bet that if she were doing one of those drugs, eventually it would catch up to her and she'd end up an addict.

Yes, many hard drug users lead secret double lives and hide their addiction from the world (I've successfully done this myself) but this person is not one of them. Honestly, I kind of think the author just wanted to show off how hardcore she is by writing this article.

For a year I was doing H without anyone knowing, not even my roommates. And yet when they found out, it was like this huge ordeal and they insisted I needed to get help or leave immediately. My roommate who needed to drink a 6 pack of tall boys every day after work though? Oh, yeah that's fine. It's just alcohol, no biggie.

Whatever her motives, at least she's (somewhat) publicly outing herself as a drug user. Look how much homosexual rights have improved in the past half-century. That wouldn't have happened if gays weren't willing to talk about being gay. With the absence of people like this, the average citizen only sees the worst of the worst of drug use, since that is all the media tends to show. Even if this woman isn't idyllic, she's still moving people's perceptions in the right direction.

"Coke is totally socially acceptable as far as i know"

what!?!?!where is cocaine completely socially acceptable?u must live in studio 54 from 20 years ago..alcohol is socially acceptable and cocaine isnt, not even close..how many house parties do you see someone just dump out a few lines on the table and snort them like nothing?only at certain types of parties with certain types of people, the harder drug users..

My hometown, small town in northern alberta, it's pretty much socially acceptable at least in the 18-25 age group, and even lots of people older.
When we are at a party and someone says that they don't do blow it's actually a shock.

Fort McMurray?

I'm sorry you don't have to answer that - I don't mean to stalk. It's just that a few buddies of mine moved there because of the job market.

At least IME, if you brought coke to a party in college no one would bat an eyelash. And if you hang out with young people (18-30) who like to party, chances are they will do coke (at least occasionally) or have friends who do.

I've had friends who weren't interested in coke, but none who really looked down on it. There's a big difference between doing a line of coke at a party/club/etc. and whipping out a needle and a spoon or a crack pipe. When I go out, I always see groups of girls coming out of a bathroom stall to do coke and no one shames them for it. If someone got caught shooting up in a bathroom, they'd probably get kicked out.

Coke has this image of being a party drug that is used recreationally. It's "fun" and okay. The other drugs I mentioned (heroin, crack, meth) are considered more addictive and people who use them are considered junkies regardless of whether or not they are daily users or not. At least that's my experience...

I'm not saying they are equally addictive, just that from an outsiders perspective, someone with little drug experience, those drugs have a certain reputation. A reputation for being addictive and their users being junkies, crackwhores, tweakers, etc. The scum of society. And I really don't think that the image coke has is synonymous with H, meth, or crack. Calling someone a cokehead, to me, just isn't as derogatory.

It's a party drug! Not a begging on the street, selling yr body, shoplifting laundry detergent drug!! (Not my opinion, btw, just how I feel the media portrays drugs and how "normal" people view them.)

You are fortunate. I've been to far too many parties where people were drunk to the point that they were choking on their vomit, or so baked that they couldn't sit up. Even so, if someone would start bustin' lines, all the boozehounds and potheads that could still manage to bla bla bla would begin preaching incessantly, like blow is so much worse. This one brilliant girl even called the cops on the coke users. It's okay though, as she got only herself arrested.

Damn. I guess it really depends on the types of people you surround yourself with.. Did you find that the potheads preached the sort of pseudo-hippie "all natural" thing? That happened to me once in middle school when some friends and I asked some older kids where we could find mescaline. Ha. They told us to stick to weed and mushrooms because they are natural.

I relate to this article a lot. It's not Pulitzer Prize winning journalism to make a hipster swoon, but it's raw and honest, and I like it because I'm a lot like the author. No one who knows me from work or graduate school has the faintest clue I'm a complete stoner, and use other "harder" drugs on special occasions. There are times I feel a certain tension in leading a double life, and wish I could share freely about the things I put in my brain. The place of drugs in my life would definitely be a missing piece that would explain a lot about me to my coworkers and trainers that doesn't entirely make sense. But I accept that not being able to share everything with everyone is unfortunately a fact of life. It could be worse. I could be a member of an ethnic or religious minority, or have threatening political beliefs or sexual proclivities, in a highly intolerant society, and have to hide huge chunks of my identity every day in order to survive. Many in the world live this way every day, and never complain.

I think the term "hard drugs" should be banished from the English language. At the very least it should be discouraged on BL.

So you think that its a common thing for people that use drugs recreationally and are functioning to be open about what they do. I didnt get that vibe at all that she was making this thread to sound hard. I believe we are very much a minority. at least in america we are. Very negative things can happen to someone if they are open about almost any kind of drug use. Stereotypes are still are very large part of how people think and they dictate how someone is gonna act towards you.

Like i said before, i think their should be more posts like this so we can breakdown the stereotype that everyone that uses drugs is a low life, stealing, lying junkie. It has to start somewhere and i think it starts by showing people examples. its the proof. This person goes to work, pays bills, has relationships with people, and is a productive member of society but does drugs at the same time. What can someone say if the only difference between them and this person is the drug use.

Hell yes, they wouldn't shut up about it, and there were some memorable comments, like this pearl of wisdom:

this one female pothead at a house party said:
Weed is natural, coke isn't. That shit is all chemicals, it'll mess you up. Even if you smoke some weed or drink booze to cancel out the effects, those man-made chemicals you're snorting up your nose will fuck you up. You're bad!
