I have recently been prescribed methadone by my local substance misuse service and was told at the initial assessment that it was my responsibility to inform the DVLA who it seems imposes an automatic ban for 12 months followed by a medical examination to assess your fitness to drive. Im now about to start my 4th week of treatment and so far seem to be tolerating it well - I know the right thing to do is to tell the DVLA but if I dont would they ever be more the wiser? The same advice applies if you use heroin and Ive been using heroin for 10 years without informing the DVLA. Yes I know Im going to get a serious bollocking for driving while using drugs but whether it be smack, methadone, weed, speed, pills or coke Ive been driving for 17 years with no incident (and ill grant anyone that this is more luck than judgement). I know if i get stopped and they find a bottle of meth in my glove box with my name on it (or any other drug for that matter, not that I label all my drugs as belonging to me) then im rightly fucked but If I keep this quiet and try to avoid killing anyone is there any chance of my treatment getting back to the DVLA unless I tell them?
On a completely different note I find that my driving improves while smoking weed - i know it probably lowers my reaction times but I find it makes me drive more slowly, more courteously, that it improves my observations which in my fucked up reasoning offsets whatever effect it has on my reaction to an emergency stop. I know if I ever have an accident and get blood tested ill end up in jail but as I smoke weed at least 2 or 3 days a week I dont believe Ive ever driven with it not in my system which is what they go by regardless of whether or not you're actually stoned
I know drug driving is reckless but as I have lived in a village since getting a driving license Ive never known any different. Its only been 5 or 6 years that Ive stopped driving pissed up.
