Nigella barred from US

Never mind being convicted, never mind being arrested, you're barred if you even say you've taken drugs. This has taken my outrage and paranoia to new levels.

Nigella Lawson has been banned from the US because of her court confession that she took cocaine.

Her television career in the US - she is a judge on talent show The Taste - is now in peril.

Although Scotland Yard did not act over her confession, the US authorities are taking a tougher stance.

Miss Lawson arrived alone at Heathrow’s Terminal Five on Sunday morning to catch a direct British Airways flight to LA.

She is thought to have checked in and passed security before being told she could not board her plane. She had to return to the first class check-in to arrange to collect her hold luggage.

Miss Lawson is thought to have tried to enter the US by registering online for permission to travel and confirming she had not been arrested or convicted of offences including taking illegal drugs. But the US can also decide to bar foreigners who have committed drugs offences without ever being charged.

Thats absolute madness...!

You would of thought with the drug problem in America theyd be "oh fuck it, a few thousand more for a couple weeks aint gonna hurt"

Plus, with their failing economy they should be welcoming the extra cash, black market money turns to legal money at some point... They need to rethink this..! ;)

On a more serious note, I can see our medical history eventually being used to decide where we are allowed to travel, we can't be trusted to tell the truth can we, and why would we.... Especially when it all gets loaded up onto that national database, wont be long until its international I guess.

That is hypocrisy and corruption taken to another 2 levels.

They'll probably start giving you a mouth swab at the terminal before long, no druggies allowed on airplanes...! Except to holland.. and Portugal..!

Is your only hope to lie on the visa waiver and hope you get away with it?

Only problem is if you're caught, you're dragged out of the customs line by the hair, thrown in a cell and banned from ever entering the country again for life.

From my experience - you have to lie on all visa's. Chances are that customs / immigration will not check the history of the average Joe Blogs before arrival. If your actually caught, your not really dragged out by the hair etc - your kept to one side (usually in the airport as your not allowed to enter the country) and sent back on the next flight. IF you have already entered the country, then just stay out of trouble for the few weeks your there.

Your 100% correct - when you think about the drug problems and drug users already in the country your travelling to, then if you have a history of substance use / abuse why should that matter?

Just don't disclose the full truth when completing any visa :) You omit information as you didn't think it was relevant.

This is nothing new, Kate Moss was banned from the playboy anniversary celebration last year.

If you are preventing super models from getting naked you know your society is fucked.

Are they next going to read up on all international musicians / actors / other celebrities who have probably taken drugs and ban them too ?

Was it just because she had admitted her heinious offence in a court of law, rather than in an article in some music magazine or blog or autobiography or something ?

Nigella Lawson is clearly a very dangerous person and subliminally promotes drug use through her cookery programs. :\

^

Quite a few musicians don't get to tour the US due to drugs and visa restrictions MDB.

Maybe MaccyD's lobbied Nigella out.

I'm glad I have no overwhelming desire to visit the USA. Do they still really ask about "leftist" affiliations Sandy? Blimey. My gf's family were kicked out for leftism (her dad went over there to help kick start the ACLU) but that was in the times of Nixon FFS.

how does mick jagger and ozzy osbourne still get around?

exactly, it's double standards again. Maybe Nigella was just unfortunate with the high profile nature of her case and that it all happened relatively recently. It all seems very arbiraty the way people like you named get away with it, whilst others don't. She seems to be cursed with more than a bit of bad luck in her life.

Is it only me who's more than a little skeptical about this? I smell a publicity stunt, I really do.

Of course, there's every chance she could be turned away, but I'd usually expect that to occur one she touched down in the US. In fact, she has a team of people working for her, plus the TV production crew presumably... I think at least one of them would have done a bit of research or planning beforehand.

Cynical? Possibly.

"... are you seeking entry to engage in criminal or immoral activities?"

I would love to see if anybody has answered 'yes' to this question.

Yeah there are 'trick questions' in some psychological tests. For example statements such as "There are some people that i do not like. True or False?" If you select 'false' it's meant to indicate that you are not being honest. But obviously "... are you seeking entry to engage in criminal or immoral activities?" is taking things to a ludicrous extreme.
