Anyone else had a codeine addiction?

Can quite believe it. Long-acting opies are a complete nightmare to come off for the most part. Subutex I consider a bit of an exception to the rule but have seen plenty horror stories about extended w/d from the stuff so perhaps I just got lucky there too. Compared to heroin or methadone it's an absolute doddle though. Unfortunately, I can't see many docs/DSPs being knowledgeable enough about pod use for there to be much chance of a subbies script and they're bastard expensive online :\

If I did go the DSP/legit route I'd probably just give my dosages in terms of Morphine, rather than have them guessing a dose or just not doing anything. 'This source states there is between 2mg and 500mg of Morphine in a Kg of plant matter, therefore I shall prescribe assuming it is a 2mg habit'...

Ha! Quite. That is a helluva variation, mind. One of many reasons I've never really gone the poppy route. Although Knock always claimed consistency with pods (apparently far worse variability with seeds). Gave it a go with a few he left for me when came to visit. Did seem to have a rather pleasing effect but works out expensive if you have any kinda tolerance. Also, managed to leave a pan of water an pods on the hob to the point the water boiled off (think I was somewhat holed on 3-MeO-PCP (another prezzie)). As such, I still have a pan that's absolutely black with opigunk. Been meaning to use it to make a stew or summat cos should have quite the kick :D

Codeine was expensive. I was buy 60 mg tabs off online pharmacies because the 12.8 were too weak for me. I became too impatient to do CWE so I ended up using linctus and the pure codeine tabs 900 mg a day. On the suboxone mega thread they don't seem to think that was a bad habit at all. Hmmm yes when you're on benefit with a young child warped due to addiction yes it is.... but yea lol

900mg is bad enough. Works out to ~90mg of morphine/day, I think. Maybe not major compared to actual morphine (or similar) habits but quite nasty enough.

When I first signed up for BL I was still IVing 1g of codeine 3-4x a day. Had no idea of quite how risky it is IVing pills nor codeine in general. One of many situations I suspect BL saved life and/or limb.

I was gna say it's quite dangerous to IV codeine then lol.

It's extremely dangerous, yes. Above and beyond just shooting pills which is pretty damn dangerous in and of itself. I developed quite the nasty habit though and was the only way I could get enough in me at a time to keep the clucks at bay and still get a decent effect each time. I once posted a picture of my calf muscle ~5-10mins after injecting - with all the scratchmarks you'd expect (and then some) from IVing summat with such intense histamine release in such quantities. I also had no clue about antihistamines. It's really quite amazing how terribly ill-informed I was before joining BL. Quite gobsmacking I survived at all given how incredibly reckless some of the stuff I used to do was :\

Fucking Hell Shammy, that alone speaks for volumes for how necessary BL is!

Quite. Without the internet accurate drug info is very thin on the ground. Did potter a bit around other druggy sites early on but they were all shite so settled on BL pretty quickly and never left. Has definitely taught me a thing or two along the way. Especially given my actual drug knowledge was all but non-existent initially. Plenty experience but - as the codeine thing demonstrates rather nicely - just cos you get away with something for a goodly while does not make it safe or sensible practice.

Stuff is so mentally addictive even more so then vals for me, i been doign alot of DHC lately paramol extractions. So nice : )

Hi, I have been taking codeine in an attempt to prevent attacks of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. an attack is knocked on the head by pethidine that I have to go to A and E to get. I find that when I run out of codeine, it is hard to sleep. I use Zopiclone (a GABA inhibiting hypnotic) to sleep unless I can lay my hands on Temazepam (The UK medical community seem very reluctant to give it out- I wonder if a lot of them have Zopiclone mugs, laser pointers.....) Diazepam helps to lessen any anxiety you may feel when not on codeine but isn't great for sleep. The more busy you can stay when withdrawing from codeine, the better. You really can think yourself sick! I would say " take the codeine when your body reminds you strongly and you can't stop thinking about it. Also remember that as the anti motility action of codeine wears off, this can cause discomfort. keep meals small and ideally liquid. If you can get Buscopan (Hyoscine Butyl-bromide) It can really help with any cramping pains. Obviously best if you can avoid replacing one habit with another, but be miserable for no man! You only liveonce and it's damned hard to enjoy a life in pain! :) All the best. James

[Rant Of Fury Caution]

After the bad day I had I was low on my meds. I eeked them out as long as poss but yesterday had only 2mg diaz n 30mg codeine. Went down to the chemists, saw the head ph explained n she was lovely n saw I was in a state. Obviously we both knew a gp would just have to OK it so I said I'd ring explain emergency etc n come back after a walk in a few. Gp receptionist rang me n told me to get up there. I had to fuckin blast up there after an already long walk of shame n pain. Had a call while waitin from Phrm that she'd been told the random gp understood n would sort it out there - Other chem closed at 6pm - Finaly went in n she said...
"So... What can I do for you...?"

I felt like shoutin "are you fuckin kiddin me?!?!" but no. Explained, told her that the now offwork Phrm jus needed her to say - literally "Oh Kay" - n that she was told all was known.
She wanted to send me to hospital ( I showed her the superficial cuttin on arm) n again felt like screaming "do.. you... think... i... could handle a fuckin busy AE?????"

Codeine WD are very physical compaired to H......

I've managed to get dependent on this stuff. Really struggling to knock it on the head. 3rd day into withdrawl and cant get off the toilet.

If you're on Day 3, keep it up, you are at the peak, or even past it. As surprisingly physical as Codeine WD, it is over quickly. By Friday/Saturday, you should be improving massively, from then on: it will be mostly mental. I say 'mostly' as the RLS can outstay its welcome.
Good luck, Badger!

As has been mentioned, Day 3 is generally the peak of w/d and if you can get past today you should be on the home stretch. I'd recommend loperemide for the GI issues if you can get hold of it (OTC from any pharmacy and most supermarkets). It really does help a lot with cramping and general unpleasantness. I find codeine w/d is mostly physical and really is hard on the gut and if you can avoid the worst of that with loperamide you'll probably feel a lot better. Other than that just stick with it cos you've just done the hardest part and it will get easier from here on in. 4-5 days is all it is really with the third being the worst usually - nearly there now :)

You should offer a "Shambles Rehab" service to us Bluelighters. For £400 one could stay at Shambles towers for a week to see out their withdrawals in the company of (well, one of) EADD's most knowledgeable opiate experts. You just provide a bed, a toilet and lots of help and reassurance.

I'd jump at the chance.
