Hi,
I've been taking valium (not prescribed) every night for about 7 months. Usually just 2.5mg, but occasionally more. Can I stop cold turkey with this? Will it be very uncomfortable? I've heard horror stories, but then my dose is much lower than most of them, so...
any advice appreciated

My experience today made me realise I'm not gonna be able to quit cold turkey - or not without losing my job, anyway. Had really bad anxiety and felt completely out of it. Took my normal dose just then and I'm back to normal. So, my question now is, what's the best way to go about cutting down/ and how long will it take? I know there information about tapering on google, but nothing really about low dose - my situation is pretty different from people on 60mg a day etc. I cannot get the 2mg tables since I don't have a prescription. Would it be best to basically halve my current dose (quarter a 5 mg tablet, so then taking 1.25 a day), or keep my current dose but take it every second day (I think i could handle that). I want to get off it asap but, I have no idea how long the side effects will last/will they get worse/what's the best way to do it

I should add that, although I didn't take the valium for anxiety, I do have something of an anxiety problem in general (I suspect caused by past stimulant abuse, although I haven't used any uppers for months). So I don't want to make that a lot worse.

Just cut the dose in half every 2 weeks till you're down to nothing IMO.

You say you want off it asap and the dose you take isn't large so the taper will be short.

Diazepam has a long half-life, so you're not going to feel the withdrawals if you are in fact dependent, after just one day of not taking it. It takes a few days at least to get sick from long acting benzos.

If you've been taking it everyday for 7 months.. I'd say theres a very good chance you are dependent. While it is a low dose and therefore not a serious a dependency, benzo withdrawal can still be very dangerous and you should not just discontinue taking them without tapering or talking to a doctor.

Benzo withdrawal is bad very bad and dangerous. I've been through it once and never want to again. For me it was worse than a major opiate withdrawal. If your withdrawal symptoms get really bad maybe a touch of alcohol would ease them. Other than that best of luck to you.

I've dropped from 2.5mg long term with no issues, maybe a little uncomfortableness, but nothing serious.

I would say try and get some sleepers like zoppiclone or something and try calms or something its such a low dose anyway just try taking one every two days im down from 8mgs of clonazepam a day to 15mgs of diazepam and 7.5mgs of zoppiclone still not pleasant just got to deal with it in a way
