Navy warship HMAS Melbourne makes second African drug bust - Over 2 Tonnes

Those good ol' $50,000 keys of hash - I mean, really - even street price-wise, $50 for a gram of hash? Yeah maybe back before the hydroponics revolution but nowadays I don't know anyone that'd pay that price 8)

Were you smoking before the hydroponics revolution? In the 1980's Afghan hash was much cheaper than it is now, better too. Its twice as much in Canada now if you can get it at all. Hydroponics replaced hash for alot of people, but it didn't make hash cheaper. Ship's most likely destination was Europe which has cheapest imported hash of any place not in the 3rd world. So yes the value was exgerated.

The hashish in Canada comes from East Africa. The "exaggerated" value must be the total of the hash as sold, proportional to each final destination.

The $1.8 billion is the total cost of Operation Slipper. "Around 1,550 ADF personnel are based within Afghanistan as part of Operation SLIPPER, while about 800 personnel are deployed across the broader Middle East Area of Operations." https://www.navy.gov.au/operations-and-exercises/slipper

HMS Melbourne is not even mentioned at any point in the Wikipedia article. It is just one ship, which is responsible for more than drug interdictions.

Yeah, back in Sydney in the very early 90's there was loads of top quality hash, big amounts with stamps and coloured cellophane wrapped around them or whatever. Some of that stuff was so nice, it was more common to be sold hash in my circles for a while back then than it was to get anything green. Now days we hardly ever see it, which sux. Loved the smell and the stone.

Well, the cusp anyway - I first started smoking in 1993, just when hydro was becoming a big thing in Australia. I remember back in those days buying a $50 of hash at a festival (my memory is foggy but in retrospect I think a $50 was 2g anyway, I've bought hash since but so infrequently I couldn't tell you how much I paid - I know it was never $50 a g anyway, lol)

Let me draw you another map.

No.

RCMP analysts estimate that at least 100 tonnes of hashish enter Canada every year. Montreal-based organized crime groups have specialized in the large-scale importation of hashish and exercise a monopoly over its wholesale distribution. The hashish market in central and eastern Canada is known world-wide. US criminals are among the international traffickers who orchestrate multi-tonne shipments of this drug from Pakistan directly to Montreal by mothership or container.
