Chef Jordan Guise laughed himself to death after overdosing on nitrous oxide

A YOUNG British chef died of a laughing gas overdose soon after learning he was going to become a father for the first time, it has been revealed.

Jordan Guise was found dead by his boss — former England 7s rugby international Johnny Howard — at his French apartment on February 6.

It later emerged that Mr Guise has been experimenting with nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, just before he died.

The 21-year-old had been working as head chef at La Charnière in Beziers in the south of France. He had just told his mother, Leesa Malpas, the news that his girlfriend was expecting in September.

“We were laughing and joking with him,” she told The Kidderminster Shuttle. “He phoned and told us on the Tuesday and died on the Thursday. We do know that he died painlessly. He was very relaxed.”

The talented cook had cut his teeth at The Granary Hotel in Shenstone, Worcestershire, before Mr Howard offered him a job at La Charnière. He was promoted to head chef within a fortnight of arriving last August.

“(Jordan) lived his dream — to be a head chef in France,” Ms Malpas said.

“He was passionate about his work and was very proud of himself, as were his family, friends and work colleagues.”

A French coroner returned a verdict of accidental death caused by an overdose of nitrous oxide but an inquest in England has since been opened and adjourned.

The mother of Mr Guise’s unborn baby has reportedly returned to Britain.

What a BS headline. I thought it was going to be the Daily Fail at first but, now that the Fail has launched in Australia, it's going to be a race to the bottom for the online tabloids - news.com.au has to push to compete for the clicks. Sad times, indeed :|

He died of a nitrous overdose - which is anything but funny - and the editors decided to play a tragic death against the 'laughing gas' nickname for nitrous. It's as bad as the 'junkie dad' headline in the Daily Tele.

Is it possible to overdose on Nitrous? I thought the main danger of inhaling too much was suffocation due to lack of Oxygen?

^ I just read an account the other day of a guy who did thousands of cartridges of nitrous over a decade, and he ended up with permanent neurological damage...but this was a cumulative effect after all the years of nitrous. I'd have to assume that asphyxiation was more likely the direct cause of death...if it's not lack of oxygen, then there would almost have to be other drugs involved here, I think.

also, I've had friends who abused the SHIT out of nitrous and they're fine, but it's whatever I guess...

Yea I used to do it a LOT way back, million to one odds he did something boneheaded and asphyxiated himself... like those kids who hook up a mask to nitrous and pass out with no way to get any oxygen. Sad, but boneheaded. I'm strongly thinking less nitrous overdose and more oxygen underdose.

Sure, it's possible to get neurological damage from truly extreme levels of excessiveness, but it's a far cry from huffing glue or something.

I used to work at Starbucks and got myself a cracker. I would take a box or two of 20 cartridges about every other day. I would drive home all the time cracking one cartridge after another for the whole 30min drive( I know stupid but I was a pretty reckless 19yr old). I would imagine I have done close to a 1000 cartridges. This was about 12yrs ago. Oh, to be young and stupid.

How do you overdose on nitrous? After several thousands of cartridges, nearly always combined with a plethora of other drugs, I had started to believe it was impossible. It seems I was wrong and maybe should take more care in the future.

I would really like to know what caused this guy to just suddenly drop dead as I do a lot of nitrous and have never heard of anything like this before. So far the only damage nitrous has caused me are a few bruises from blacking out.

Could be looked at as the same thing.. overdosing on Nitrous limits the amount of oxygen.. when people die from an overdose of opiates they almost always die due to lack of oxygen.. Im pretty sure that you can put a person ODing on massive amounts of opiates, provided they hadn't had much oxygen deprivation, on a ventilator and they should fair pretty good.. though im no doctor and I have no idea why people kidney seem to crash as well.. if its primarily due to Aspiration pneumonia, oxygen deprivation, shock?

Anyway this story is sad. An early death and a baby left behind. Hope those that love him can find some amount of peace at some point.

So I guess here is a song for the poor guy..

Wouldn't it be almost impossible to die of oxygen deprivation from nitrous use though? I mean the only way I see it happening is if you pass out with a bag over your head. Otherwise you'll just drop your cartridge and continue to inhale air. It's not like it stops you from breathing.

And the high is so short I don't really see aspiration pneumonia as a cause of death either, you would wake up long before that happens.

I think there must have been some other catalyst here. Either another drug or some medical condition.

^ I would be really surprised if it was just a cartridge worth.. it was likely many cartridges or off a tank.. also I dont know how the laws are in europe but you can get tanks of the automotive nitrous with out a script here all over. The automotive is not pure and it continues sulfur dioxide to because its so nauseous and is really bad for people to inhale it will supposedly deter people from huffing it... but people still rig up filters and huff away... in a serious harm reduction topic I have no idea how good the filter techniques are out there so if someone wants to do this i would make damn sure you got all your P's and Q's down no matter how simple it may seem.

Emergency Overview: Colourless gas. Suffocating odour. COMPRESSED GAS. Contains gas under pressure. May explode if heated. Will not burn. VERY TOXIC. Fatal if inhaled. Corrosive to the respiratory tract. A severe, short-term exposure may cause long-term respiratory effects (e.g., Reactive Airways Dysfunction (RADS)). CORROSIVE. Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. May cause frostbite. SUSPECT MUTAGEN. Suspected of causing genetic defects.

It should be pointed out that in the dentist's office one never receives 100% nitrous. Instead you breath a mix of nitrous and oxygen -- generally 70% N2O to 30% oxygen. This is equivalent to the amount of oxygen in room air -- but the nitrogen has been replaced by nitrous oxide.

With the big blue medical tanks its really pretty common to see someone phish out on just a really big birthday balloon. And with a punching Balloon its all but guaranteed.

Oh and the aspiration phenomania was sated in relation to the question i had about what causes the kidney to shut down so often when a opait OD is on respiration.. i think every time I have seen someone post about being on a respirator and having their kidney begin to shut down it was always a aspiration case.. this was just a guess and maybe someone knows the real answer.

I would agree that since this seems to happen so infrequently there was likely some thing that mitigated the terrible outcome.

EDIT: I think the biggest danger from high grade NO2 is falling.. touring around with different bands over the years I have seen quite a few people fall from heights and crack themselves good including one guy who phished limp off the top of a micro bus and split his skull wide open, not his scalp his skull and another who fell from the top of a school bus and broke his neck.. on a side note as I happened to not be tripping and the two people I was with were flying when they saw the guys head split it was really quite the process to try and jangle them back on track.. and they were no spring chicken either.
