Student at Madrid University comatose after eating birthday cake laced with pot

A UNI student in Spain went into a brief coma after eating a birthday cake baked with marijuana.

A further 10 others became seriously ill, officials said.

Javier Chivite, a spokesman for Madrid’s emergency services, said two youths were hospitalised early on Sunday. He said one of them was comatose and not responding to stimulus when admitted, but later recovered.

Jose Dominguez de Posada, dean of Madrid’s Alfonso X University, said the students were all male and aged between 18 and 22 and the most affected was studying veterinary sciences.

Chivite say the others were found to be suffering from euphoria, red eyes and irregular heartbeat.

Dominguez de Posada said the university campus houses about 12,000 students.

I guess these people knew they were eating cake with weed in it? It doesn't really say if they knew or not. ?

Cookies/cake/edibles can be incredibly strong, I've had some cookies in the past that absolutely hammered me, I could hardly move or talk to people and when people came over the first thing they would say is 'wow you look so smashed' etc.

I love the fact that grass is so damn safe compared to other drugs.. if this were another drug we were talking about where 11 people OD we would be reading about some dead people. Nor sure but coma feels a littel strong here.. after all people pass out from alcohol all the time.

EDIT: That being said the highest I have ever been was off edibles.. and that's really saying something.. we buttered two zips of kief, two ounces of cough, and almost 3/4 of a pound of just the trim from the leaf of the buds and made two pans of brownies. I ate two brownies and was nodded fro two days. Woke up and i had a hockey game.. half way through the game i noticed that our team way way off.. we either had to many or to few people on the ice and we were getting killed by our rival who we almost always beat.. I looked down the bench and everyone looked blasted. i asked one of my boys what the fuck was going down. he smiled and pointed to my roommate.. He smiled and held up two empty pans of brownies.. Ha we got killed but it was fun.

coma from pot is new to me...but edibles shouldn't be trifled with since you ingest the weed directly through digestion...vaping is probably the safest method, but edibles are safe if respected.

Only one of which is anything to be concerned about.

"suffering from euphoria" Isn't that an oxymoron?

These disgusting retards are abusing technical terms with wild abandon for sensationalist purposes. Coma has a specific meaning, he was obviously just temporarily unrousable. Weed cannot put you in a coma.

Suffering from euphoria is absolutely not an oxymoron. It is a complete contradiction.

oxymoron
ˌɒksɪˈmɔːrɒn/

noun: oxymoron; plural noun: oxymorons

1.
a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g. faith unfaithful kept him falsely true ).

That definition implies that it would not be a contradiction in the context it is used, it only being apparently so.
Ex: jumbo shrimp, something can't be shrimp-like and jumbo at the same time but there are jumbo shrimp relative to other sized shrimp.

Weed can render you practically incapacitated for days if you eat too much.
Is this a "coma"? I'd like to see a medical examination to determine such a thing.
Bullshit headline IMO.

In medicine, a coma (from the Greek κῶμα koma, meaning "deep sleep") is a state of unconsciousness lasting more than six hours, in which a person: cannot be awakened; fails to respond normally to painful stimuli, light, or sound; lacks a normal sleep-wake cycle; and, does not initiate voluntary actions.

Doesn't sound unreasonable. I've heard of people becoming unresponsive after eating unknown doses.

Doesn't say if they knew the cake had pot in it or not. I'm assuming not, given how much they ingested? If so... whoever made that cake without telling them is a total asshole. I'm a big fan of consent when it comes to getting so stoned you can't move.

Being too high from eating pot has to be one of the most awful experiences I've ever had.

And something tells me that if the person was also on - say heroin and Xanax - it might be no laughing matter at all.

It sure feels fucking serious when you really overdo the edibles.
Having done it enough times, I don't find it a laughing matter so much these days!

Edibles can rock you pretty hard. I made a big batch of salted caramels with some dank i grew and lots of crystally trim. I was tasting while cooking then ate probably 5 of them and it looked like i had double pink eye. On top of my mmt i was done. Locked on the couch for 12 hrs.

Did you suffer euphoria?

Eh, use whatever term you want. They amount to the same thing.
