Italy's constitutional court has overturned a law that tripled sentences for selling, cultivating and possessing cannabis, declaring it "illegitimate".

Prison rights group Antigone say the law has caused prison overcrowding, with 40% of all inmates serving sentences for drug crimes.

It could affect some 10,000 people who may be released from jail as a result.

The law went into effect in 2006 under the conservative government led by the then-Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

Italian jails are considered to be the most crowded in the European Union.

According to official data, cited by Reuters news agency, around 62,000 detainees are held in cells built for fewer than 48,000.

In January 2013, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that overcrowding in Italy's jails violates the basic rights of inmates. The Italian authorities were fined 100,000 euros ($135,700, £81,934) and ordered to solve the overcrowding issue within a year.

It does seem most countries look to us for their drug policy, though.

I'm really not sure why we are such a leader.

Maybe it's because I'm here and have this view from here, but it seems like U.S. politics are prominent around the world. They are a domino, that it doesn't hurt to have fall, in regard to these things.

Also, I think Obama is commuting sentences of certain non-violent drug offenders... But nothing like they're talking about here, which needs to happen.

I don't care who takes "credit" :) It just needs to happen. Sooner or later we're going to look to this age and shake our heads, I hope.

Even America is not talking about releasing anybody during the legalization process. By the way I hope the US government doesn't take credit for the legalization of drugs around the world one day....

I can already see them doing such a thing. But we will probably be the last to change our drug policies. Its already taking too long for the government to get its head out of its ass. The head has grown INTO the ass.

ehe good news! hopefully one day we'll go as far as legalizing it.. actually i think that day ain't too far..
also, i find quite ironic that berlusconi approved such a law in 2006, as he's famous for his drugs-fueled parties featuring sex with foreign minors, lol
