The rarity is that this conservative magazine has long been a cheerleader for drug legalization. Conservativism divorced from religiosity isn't so icky at all.

^Perhaps a team of economists could foresee the expenditure/return ratio involved in throwing billions at an unwinnable and unrewarding drug war, contrary to Reagan's stubborn idealism.

I get a week old economist every week & usually read a fair proportion of it. Not every single thing they say makes sense but their drugs angle has been spot on for many years. Some clever people out there do certainly see the economic advantages of legalisation!

^ I agree that it is far preferable when divorced from religiosity, at least...

And this is a really cool thing to know. The Economist, in 1988, arguing to legalize drugs!? During the Reagan and Thacher era? Amazing.

Reagan (Nancy) may have given the USA "Just Say No" but Thatcher, in the one and only good thing she ever did, gave the UK "Harm Reduction" as a policy (due to her advisors warning against the catastrophe that AIDS would wreak if she didn't).

The Economist always makes me bitter that my parents only had Time and Newsweek in the house when I grew up...

You're not missing much, their stance on prohibition notwithstanding.
Theres plenty of pro-war, neo liberal claptrap in the Economist too.

No kidding? That is really surprising. She did a good thing!!! Thatcher did a good thing!!! (Party ensues, with much smoking of herbs and snorting of various chemicals.)
