Tragic news to report out of Switzerland, as a fan has died from injuries sustained in a stage dive at a concert headlined by Suicidal Tendencies. The Jan. 22 show was part of the Persistence Tour that also featured Terror, Strife and Evergreen Terrace.

The newspaper Solothurner Zeitung reports that the 28-year-old fan apparently landed on the ground when he dove off the stage, according to a representative of the Kulturfabrik Kofmehl venue in Solothurn, Switzerland. “Unfortunately, crowd members failed to properly catch him and he fell to the ground,” says Pipo Kofmehl [translation via Blabbermouth].

He adds, “A security guard responded immediately, helped the young man and our emergency unit reacted as well.” The fan apparently did get up and walk around after the stage dive, but the venue insisted he be taken to the hospital. Sadly, the concertgoer had an epileptic seizure and died two days later (Jan. 24) at the Bern University Hospital.

While the fan’s death is thought to be a tragic accident, police have launched an investigation in following standard procedure.

Sadly, the stage dive death brings to mind the entire Randy Blythe incident in which a fan died from injuries he sustained at a Lamb of God concert in 2010. Blythe was detained and tried on manslaughter charges but was ultimately found not guilty of any wrongdoing in 2013.

That sucks. I've moshed but never had the chance to stage dive. I'm too old for that shit now, but if I did I would try to make damn sure that the people were going to catch me.

I don't know how some of these guys didn't badly injure or kill themselves. Especially the last one...

I know right? I feel sorry for those people's wrists/arms and potentially other body parts. lol

I'm not saying it's funny that anyone died, but if you're familiar with Scott Vogel (vocals for Terror, band playing when this happened) and his obsession with stagedive/mosh calls this is kind of hilarious. The amount of times he'll yell "STAGEDIVES! EVERYONE STAGEDIVE! LEFT AND RIGHT" during a show will probably go down to say the least. So sick of this band though, should have broken up 5 years ago

Stage diving is fucking stupid
Crowd surfing? go right ahead, but if you're gonna jump from something and expect me to catch you... well have a fun trip to the hospital or worse

If your not in the band I dont think the fans have any obligation to catch you.

They don't have an "obligation" to catch a member of the band either, but most people that go to a metal show want to have fun and not see anyone get seriously injured or worse. I think part of the problem now is some people lack the etiquette that used to exist in shows... Like if someone goes down in the pit you help them up, you don't throw punches and kicks in the pit, if someone stage dives that's not being a total douchebag you catch them.

I think another problem is the death rail they have at pretty much any concert that isn't a smaller local one. People used to be able to get right up and literally touch the stage, but now in larger concerts they insist on putting up railings to keep the fans away from the stage and give an unfortunate stage diver something to impale themselves on.

If you've ever watched the Psycho Holiday video from Pantera you know what I'm talking about...

Or even Mouth For War at 3:10...

But sadly I fear the days of moshing on the actual stage and being chucked back into the crowd are pretty much over, mostly due to lawsuits.
