EADD seeks hot new mod action [THREAD SHOT ITS LOAD]

While we're lamenting members who've left us, MurphyClox was a great poster. He's part of Hammilton's ninja group that, unfortunately, I'm not savvy enough to really participate in.

Kenny, I don't see why you don't go for the roll either. You may have some pretty strong opinions, but you don't get into much beef, and you're not pro censorship (which should be dictated by HR primarily imo) and you take tons of drugs, and your HR knowledge seems decent.

It's pretty much a patriarchally run site too, so you'll be in your element ;p

[edit]

Murphy Clox is a GREAT name. Never heard it before.

I wouldn't be a good mod as I would be way too permissive, personally the only things I wouldn't tolerate would be sourcing and spam, as in actually advertising external site, would never dream of handling out infractions for the little bitch fights some posters get involved in.

^ yeah, I see that as a good thing, as long as it doesn't get in the way of info or HR. That's why I would recommend you

yeah the having to be responsible thing puts me off too. It would make me too self conscious and stifled with every post.
I've been a Mod at other places. I'm also big on transparency, not always a welcome trait to Admins.

Responsibility I can handle in spades, it's being an opinionated, self-righteous cunt that gets in the way. It doesn't have to, but eh. If I've tried the designated channels 10 times and they don't work, and can't evolve, I'll always default to taking the shortcut I know will get the job done. That doesn't gel too well with Mod protocol either.

Moderating isn't just handing out infractions and merging threads, that's the dull donkey work. It's about knowing the forum well, so you can help people navigate and access the information they need. It's about being a reasonable and imposing and respected figure in the forum. It's about contributing in a positive way that leads the forum forward. Every forum is different; I'd be surprised if EADD mods hand out infractions very often, if at all. It's about having a vision for the forum, and finding ways to make EADD and BL better, for every stakeholder. You are the architect for our shared virtual space, the leader of our community. It can be challenging, and rewarding, and demanding, and ultimately fulfilling. You can instigate change and progress that remains as a legacy long after you leave the post. You aren't the police, you're the government. Yes, this means you have to bite your tongue sometimes, you have to behave and act in a certain way, but there's a lot to be said for being on staff.

I agree with all that except that 'imposing' possibly has connotations with 'intimidating' which non of the EADD mods are.

I accrued my temp ban on the OD sub forum, maybe that one regretabble post where i savagely lashed out at someone who had deliberately baited and provoked me wouldnt have cost me a ban if id made it in EADD, where people are more familliar with me. I agree and also think it's important that the mods know something about the members and their history or their 'issues'. I felt quite agreived as up until then it was the only time i had put a foot wrong and was immediately temp banned for it. Water under the bridge now, just making the point about perceived different levels of tolerance in the different sub forums, and that some people seem to get away with things here that they wouldnt on the other sub forums.

For example i wasnt banned when i made that ridiculous post lashing out at Cornishman who had done nothing but offer me sound advice. I did get tons of stick for it though. Getting 'stick' and facing the consequences of unacceptable posts is better than banning. It's treating people as responsible adults, even if they are not acting as such.

I'm sure this comes from a good place but damn it no I am not a leader of any community. stakeholders, architects, this makes me want to vomit :D

You're right about the navigating thing though, maybe we are not police but we are special constables on push bikes.

^Pretty sure EADD mods have more powers than PCSOs.

I'm English, you're Scottish. Let's stick to our key competencies- I'll use big words to express pompous concepts, you vomit ;)

Moderators are leaders almost by definition. I know you are all about equality and unity, but you guys as moderators are a higher status as you have more power than members. I know you dont think, or dont like to think in that way but you cannot rid BL of its' hierarchy, as much as you may want to.
