Do all drugs eventually lose their magic?

I've noticed that every drug I have tried (and continued to take recreationally) was great and euphoric the first few highs. After a while, no matter how long my breaks were, each and every drug I have tried has lost the magic that was there the first few times I had it. For example:

1) Weed- at first the highs were very pronounced, psychedelic and intense. After 3 months or so, I just felt a fraction of that feeling
2)Opiates-my DOC. AMAZING first few highs on just 15mgs of hydrocodone. Bliss, euphoria, and zero problems. Now I pop 60mg and only feel sedation, no euphoria
3)Benzos- I actually felt a noticable benzo high the first few times I took xanax or kpin but that quickly went away after a few weeks
4)Adderall-Great for the first 6 months and then lost that super focused, euphoric feeling that it used to give me.

There are more but you get what I am trying to say. Each drug was great in the beginning and then each eventually lost the magic that lured me in when I first took them. Although I have tried bigger doses but they don't help much and have more side effects. Has this been your experience as well? Does the good feeling EVER come back or is it unattainable now that my brain has gotten used to the drugs actions.

I tend to agree with you. Taking breaks certainly helps, however, even after years of abstinence I never experienced the same high as those first few times. For me, this especially applies to opiates and weed. I'm sure you've heard the expression chasing the high. Call it the law of diminishing returns. It would be cool if they were like choc chip cookies, they never lose their efficacy (for me at least).

Yes you can pretty much build a tolerance to anything. When people say "you can't experience that first high again" it's more of an expression now. The first time you try something and feel enjoyment out of it, your body starts thinking about it and your mind hypes it up like it was the best experience of your life. Because of course the first time you feel that euphoria is the best, just like anything in life. A baseball players first home-run will most likely be his most enjoyed home-run. When you've experienced something a few times, your mind gets used to it and it's not as enjoyable. That's the mental part. From a medical standpoint, you can get pretty high off most things after a long break, but your tolerance builds up way too quick. You may not get quite as high, but I've been 90-95% as high as I got in my earlier days after a 2month break from opiates, and I used to have a heavy addiction.

yep, i never used to believe it..... i always thought it was a dose related tolerance thing only. I've been on opioids for 6 straight yrs with another 4 of on and off use beffore, I don't nod anymore, I've turned blue and went unconscious tho, almost like theres no inbetween anymore.... im either just high, or im unconscious.... no nod.
I still get warm and calm from opioids but it isn't what it used to be.

I mean u can def bring back euphoria but it's gonna cost you, I worked my way from 100 - 200 -300 etc... Clear up to 900 Mgs hydrocodone just the other day, but even that only lasts as a one time high.. Iv tried every way to get the euphoria back, even bl owning close to half a grand in a night try n catch anything similar to the first time.. I guess best advice for us both is a long time break !

IMO, yes.. and when the magic's gone it best to leave them alone for the most part because once the magic is gone and people continue to chase it is when allot of problems can begin. Also a drug can do more than lose it magic it can down right turn on a person a be an awful experience. I also feel it pretty rare for a hard drug to ever flip back once she has turned.. esp for the stimulants.

The last 5-10% Bman referred is from the initial novelty of the drug. It is so beautiful the first times because it is not only pleasure but novel pleasure. This is why repetition in daily life tends to make people depressed. It is why we have trippy coloured tents for hiking in the mountains, endless shades of grey eventually can lead to melancholy. Once the drug is no longer a new thing it can only cause the pleasure inherent to it. I'm sure there are other mechanisms that are relevant to extreme abuse that cause a more pronounced effect but that is the most reliable. Cannabis also seems to have such a more complex and nuanced spectrum of effects initially that last so much longer so I'm sure the novelty has a physical effect the your receptors in the brain. The must run wild when exposed to a brand new substance they have never reacted to before.

I've built up a type of permanent tolerance, whether it's just simply getting used to the effects or something physiological, to all drugs I've used semi regularly.
Weed, cocaine, marijuana, ketamine, psychedelics, etc.
This has led me to believe that one can get used to the effects of all drugs.
The one exception I can think of may be salvia but I don't know anyone who has used it regularly

WTF?I think this is very narrow minded.
All drugs? if the case then how come cigs never loose's it's taste. INFACT it keeps getting better and doesn't really matter.
Say DMT , would you say will loose it's magik if done in ecxess? if so you just don't deserve it.

Putting one drug down for a few months and perhaps using another in the off-period can be beneficial. ALTHOUGH you could just stop using everything for a few months but in my experience I would be kidding myself if I said I was going to do that. I found during my high school years MDMA lost its fun and felt a bit empty...Then I found LSD and well, I used that for 6 months then moved onto heavy amphetamine use. I then came back to MDMA after about 18months and I was blown away in the difference effects due to abstinence from it for a prolonged duration. Although the depression I experienced I days afterwards was out of this world and nothing like I remember...

if i take a long tolerance break like a year or more the magic comes back but doesn't last long but if i keep my tolerance low opiates are still fucking awsome but i wanna kick anyway it's not worth the wds

i think all drugs do to a degree, i used to love pot got so high and positive effects, one month it made me dysphoric and hated it, and cant get so high anymore, amphetamines used to give me a 15hr hiigh, im lucky to feel it for 4 hrs with half the positive effects it used to give. opiates i never nod..so yes it loses magic over time but not all of the magic

Do you get headrushes the same way you did when you started smoking? Nope, and even a really long break isn't going to give you headrushes as powerful as before you became accustomed to them.
And ask many of the people who have used dmt regularly, it is indeed possible for it too lose some of it's luster, although it is powerful enough that this isn't always the case

The buzz is gone after the first cigarette and that lasting stimulation takes progressively larger bouts of chain smoking to attain. This is unless you just smoke once a day or something. It's also ironic you say "taste" because the smoke causes olfactory overload, effectively numbing your sense of taste and smell to a large degree.

My main two drugs of choice are weed and Adderall/amphetamines...with me, at least, weed does regain its magic if you lay off it for a couple of weeks/months. The effect of starting to smoke weed again is extremely pronounced after a long break - off of just a few hits, you can be high for 5 hours, when if you smoke a bowl (which is 10-20 hits) a day, you'll be lucky to be high for half that time.

However, I definitely agree with you on my second DOC, amphetamines. I took a 6 month break once and tried to do them again for recreational purposes, but the 'magic' was completely gone - yes, I got very stimulated and did a lot of pertinent work that I needed to do, but there was hardly any euphoria like I used to get from it. Due to these bad experiences of not feeling euphoric off of my precious Adderall again, I have since entirely quit amphetamines, although I used to enjoy doing them in 20-40 mg doses very much...

Something about pharmaceuticals/man-made drugs in general makes me think that there isn't much to gain from them after a protracted period - what high can you scrape out of a pill that's the exact fucking same every time????? But, with weed, with me, it's a 180 from that, and a short or long break from smoking does wonders to the highs that you can reach again...peace...

I figured that was the case. I guess it's a good reason for me to take a long break from everything. I understand why people move on to 'harder' drugs because they are trying to get that feeling back again, but that's just a trap. Thanks

opiates most definitely lose their magic over time but will still provide a very dulled out contentment even after years of use..

adderal and other uppers lose their magic really quickly ime and end up turning on you pretty quick, ie they backfire and turn you into an anxious, irritable, sluggish wreck.

Benzos were never magical in the first place so lol

the only drug that has seemed to be able to still pack a punch after a long time of use is ghb or Bdo..if you can keep it to once a day or every few days it still packs a whallop..its not mind blowing euphoria like in the beginning but still does the trick :)

Personally in my 7 years using drugs, the only drug that completely lost it's "magic" for me is DXM. I can take 600-800mgs & I get is double vision, feels real dirty etc. All my other favorite drugs like Opiates & Amphetamines still work effectively aside from a skyrocketed tolerance to both.
