New server/upgrade issues and comments

had to log in twice and then it only showed that i was logged in when i went to view a thread.

Is anyone else still having trouble receiving email updates regarding new posts in subscribed threads?

Have you checked to be sure you're subscribed? And have you checked your spam folder? I'm regularly receiving email about posts to this thread.

I think this is related to the "login" problems that some members have reported.

I have noticed an issue with redirects that will be causing people using the old url (whether from bookmarks, browser history or page links on the web generally) to be unauthenticated, despite having logged in and having the necessary cookies. Well, foreigner noticed it but I've been trying to work out what's going on.

There is a redirect in place so if people access "http://www.bluelight.ru" (the "old" front page url), they will be sent automatically to "http://www.bluelight.org", the new front page url.

There seems to a be a separate redirect in place so if people access non-front page material, like "http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/content/75" (the old url for the Research Portal) they are forwarded to "http://bluelight.org/vb/content/75". Notice the missing www.

After such a redirect, I am not logged in. If I try to log in, then it says Thank you for logging in, returns me to the page I was looking at, yet I am still not logged in.

If I put the "www." in manually, then I am logged.

So it looks like these "non-front-page" redirects should be redirecting to "www.bluelight.org" and not "bluelight.org".

Alternatively whatever it is that is not letting us authenticate for "bluelight.org" could be fixed.

The same applies for non-front-page material accessed using the domain name bluelight.org.

Aby there is more chat about this in the staff forums, not sure if you're active in there, which is why I'm posting this here.

Now obviously this is not a problem for people who are accessing the site as www.bluelight.org. I have updated my bookmarks so it's not a problem for me, but it appears you are, quite rightly, intending to cater for people using bluelight.ru, www.bluelight.ru and bluelight.org, and it seems that's not working smoothly.

edit: I've just noticed that the behaviour is different between Firefox and Chrome :! I've been doing the testing under Chrome so I'll need to check out Firefox, maybe it's adding in the www. automatically or something.

further edit: OK I've just tested and the problem exists in firefox too. It exists for all HTML page links, and it exists for directly entered URLs too, sometimes firefox will add in the "www." automatically itself, before it even sends a request to the server, just checked with the network sniffer, it seems to be something to do with whether it's in history/bookmarks or not. So I don't think this changes anything.

Just as a "real world" example, we have sort of directory in EADD which links to a bunch of threads (nsfw'd for size, no nudity):

All these links work, but I'm unauthenticated.

I will just do a search/replace to fix that specific post, but I'm sure there are many other links and lists of links floating about BL.

Are any other registered members encountering a problem where threads won't load unless they are logged out? It has been occurring since the "upgrade" last night for me.

I pulled it into here and attached his account to it. Thanks bob!

SirTophamHat has posted since this was put in anon though, so I'm assuming the issue has resolved.

login issue since change to org

Don't know if anyone else's experienced this but since we've changed to .org when I log in seems to work, I get the redirect screen but then it just shows me the unlogged in page I was on - no Blue Druid profile, etc along the top right, no subscribed threads on quicklinks, etc.
When I click onto another page then it recognises me as logged in and shows all this stuff but I have to navigate to another page to get this.

I use a recently-invented set of gender-neutral pronouns to avoid offending anyone. Instead of "he", say "zhe". Instead of "her", use "zhe". His/hers? "Zher"! Even plurally, you can talk about "zhem". Zhou're welcome.

We have rewrite rules all over the place to make sure everybody gets to .org. I located one that was redirecting from bluelight.ru to bluelight.org, and have updated that to point to www.bluelight.org.

knock, thanks for your sleuthing :)

Hello, I'd like to PM an admin but I can't access my PM box and I'm only allowed to post in Support, all other subforums are closed too.

edit: nevermind, prob solved ;)

Just wanted to say that the server issues were quite annoying and I was about to ditch BL, but lately BL has been running smooth, got the quote feature back and the menu bar for posting images and whatnot. From a basic user perspective, things seem to be much better. Nice job and thanks for the upgrade.

Email notifications are still out of order. I can't get any PM or subscribed thread notifications.
Don't bother asking if u have my CP set up correctly, I understand the interface after 6 years.

I know this was reported very early in the thread, but in case it has been forgotten, we still have an outstanding issue with the links to the various sub-forum posting guidelines/FAQs missing at the top of each forum index. Is that being looked at?

I confirmed from the server logs that notifications are being sent to your email address. Check your spam folder.

I see sub-forums listed on a number of forums. Do you know how the posting guidelines/FAQs are set up? As announcements, stickies, something else? I need to know where to look for them in the CP.

I'm getting the thread notifications, but the PM ones are getting flagged as spam via outlook. More or less if you adjust your spam settings the issue should resolve, or at least it did for me.
