A teenage boy has died after it is thought he took ecstasy at a rave.

Sixteen-year-old Daniel Spargo-Mabbs was taken to hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning, after going to a party at an industrial site in Hayes, west London.

Police were called to the rave in Pump Lane, Silverdale Road, by paramedics treating the unconscious teenager at around 4am.

He was initially taken to a hospital in west London, then moved to another in central London, but died yesterday.

Scotland Yard said two men, aged 18 and 19 and from Croydon, south London, were arrested for supplying controlled drugs and are being questioned.

Daniel was a pupil at Archbishop Tenison's Church of England High School in Croydon, where headteacher Richard Parrish paid tribute to him as a bright, articulate boy with "huge potential"

Mr Parrish said: "He was going to go far.

"We are still stunned. We're just beginning to emerge from that."

The teenager, who was in the first year of studying for his A-levels, was "just beginning to find his niche" and was interested in "a whole range" of things, the teacher said.

He wrote a letter to parents to express the school's grief.

It said: "Sometimes you hope that the worst thing won't happen. Sometimes it does happen anyway. And yesterday it did.

"We began Monday knowing that Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, one of our Year 12 students, who has been with us in the school since Year Seven, was in a critical condition on a life support machine. At lunch time he died. In the afternoon we spoke to each year group in turn, starting with his own, to tell them the terrible news.

"Today we begin again, knowing that our school and the world is the poorer without him. Today is too soon to do anything more than react to the brutal fact that we have lost Daniel.

"Tomorrow we will begin the process of remembering, of paying tributes, of collecting our thoughts and of coming together as a community to remember him together.

"Our heart goes out to Daniel's family, to his parents, to his brother Jacob (who did his A Levels here last summer) and to his closest friends."

Mr Parrish added: "It is not normal that a bright, articulate, talented 16-year-old should be taken from us in this way. It is not normal that his school and, above all, his family should be grieving today for his loss to us.

"It is not normal that his year group and his friends should have to learn so soon in life how short that life can be."

Not this again. Mdma did not kill this young man, the war on drugs did.
The government is supporting it in every way possible.
When will this world see that clean accessible drugs are the only way we will ever preventt these tragic and completely unnecessary loses of life.

you can have one off negative reactions to mdma. it has a good safety profile statistically but it really does fuck some people up and that can be people who are poor metabolisers or just those who are super sensitive to mdma and i've met a few of those who cannot see straight and vomit repeatedly off one pill that isn't doing much to the rest of the group. i quote from one guy on a reasonable low dose "i just feel like my head is about to explode". so yes there are risks but here fuck knows what was in that pill.

but if he died of alcohol overdose it would not be in the news unless there was a huge moral panic element to the story. mdma is in itself a moral panic and so are raves. hence newsworthy

the story is sad

This seems to be another sad case of a young person dying in largely unknown circumstances being jumped on by the media so they can report "yet another...(whatever)" in order to generate more hysteria for whatever band-wagon they happen to be on at the time.

The only information that seems to be factual is that this lad and two others bought 2.5g of a powder and consumed some or all of it between them, leading to one of them suffering elevated body temperature and subsequent heart attacks before passing away a day later.

No post-mortem has been carried out yet AFAIK and no mention of any analysis of any substance they took is forthcoming. Even as and when that information is made public, it won't make a lot of difference as this has now become yet another "ecstacy-related death" because the media have reported it as such. Facts don't matter any more.

As long as the general population continue to consume this sort of lazy and mis-informed reporting they will remain ignorant on the subject. Parents will continue to try and frighten their offspring into "saying no" and their kids will continue to hide what they're doing and get their drugs from dodgy sources without knowing what they're buying and how much of it to take.

All very sad, but avoidable if the Government and media would wise-up.

^ Yeah I agree, where did you get the part about the 2.5 grams from? I just re-read the article and didn't notice it, it is early here, maybe I skimmed over it. Or did you read that from another source?

^This

MDMA does kill the odd person here and there....It doesn't have the safety profile of LSD or Cannabis....but you're right, people die all the time from alcohol and other drugs, but when it's "ecstasy" it's always a news story! However, I don't think you can just blindly say every case of "ecstasy" overdose is due to drugs being illegal and other dodgy substances being sold as "ecstasy"...That's a bit ridiculous!

Sometimes the drugs just hit you in a certain way and your body can't handle it at that time...It happens with cocaine...It happens with many prescription drugs, it's nobody's fault really...Thousands of people die every year from prescription drugs that aren't even controlled substances, but the media never mentions that! Those medications that lower cholesterol, "Lipitor" and shit, that stuff can be fucking dangerous....read the info packets attached to some of those drugs!

I think most papers have only one agenda and thats to sell newspapers so they sensationalize everything. Half the people on staff probably get high and if cheap alcohol in the form of methanol kills somebody they'll call for a war on bootleggers.

If it was molly, then he could have used way too much at once. If it wasn't... well... that makes sense too.

There's always a chance that he was unknowingly ill with an illness or disease in which the use of a drug such as MDMA would be completely (no exceptions) contraindicated.

What about poly drug use or a Rx medication which when mixed with MDMA may be fatal? Or perhaps water intoxication? Dehydration?

I'm sorry but I have a hard time believing that what appears to have been a healthy 16 year-old male dropped dead from the sole use of an average recreational dosage of MDMA.

Doubtful that his loved ones will be reading his, but my utmost sincere condolences nonetheless.

I saw it in one report, which at least had quoted someone directly involved with the case instead of re-quoting the Daily Mirror or looking at Twitter...

Let's just see what the PM reveals and then we can try and work out what went wrong. I heard the parents being interviewed on the radio today and they had already been told what went wrong by the media. That's not how it should be IMO.

His friends took the same substance, believed to be MDMA and were all fine.

As already said, it can happen that people have a bad reaction to a chemical the first time taking it and sadly you do not really know if you are until you have consumed it. I dont think its fair to say that MDMA alone does not kill people, because its been documented in the past that people do have bad reactions, but I read that the odds are very very very low. If they come out with further tox reports and its confirmed that it was not MDMA then thats another story, but its not out of the question.

^Exactly...and how many "raves" and other large events occur where MDMA is taken by thousands of people happen virtually every day around the globe?....And that doesn't even take into consideration the tens of thousands of people who take this drug in private in small groups every single day....And yet, when one person dies, it's a huge deal!

Not to say that this isn't a tragedy, but I wouldn't exactly call MDMA a "dangerous drug" either....I understand people's frustration of it being characterized as such, but to say that pure MDMA is "completely harmless" would be far from the truth as well...It's a powerful drug that does come with risks, and should be treated with respect.

We had another case in the UK recently where a kid had sourced 2g of AMT online and taken almost half of it in one go. Not unsurprisingly, almost 1g of AMT had a bad effect on his body and he ended up dying.

Daniel Spargo-Mabbs may have died as a result of consuming too much of whatever was in the bag or a bad reaction to a 'normal' dose either on its own or in combination with other substances he may have consumed that night. We won't know until the toxicology report.

Whatever the cause of death in these and other "legal high"/"party drug" related cases, it seems clear to me that there isn't enough awareness, particularly with first-time users with regard to recommended dosages and the prevalence of contaminated or mis-labelled drugs.

Whatever the drug consumed, we should always remember that the only difference between a drug and a poison is the dose. It's an old saying, but still holds true.

As more bulk powders come onto the market, it seems more likely we'll have more problems like this because inexperienced users have no concept of how much of a particular substance they should be taking. I can see how someone who hasn't done their research could buy a small bag of AMT, MDMA or whatever and not realise that such a seemingly small amount of something could be dangerous to them.

At least with pills and pellets first time users are probably going to limit their consumption to one or two, because that's what we're programmed to think is a safe dose of most medicines. With powders, 1g doesn't look much, but could be many, many times a normal dose.

I can't see the drug vendors putting instructions on their products, so we need to do it some other way. Websites such as Bluelight are invaluable in this respect and I am sure lives have been saved as a result of people finding information on here and other forums so they can make an informed decision about what they put into their bodies.

If the media and Government were actually bothered about these deaths, they would put together a harm-reduction campaign to educate users rather than demonise them and use them to further their political and commercial motives. But I don't see that happening, so we just have do the best we can and hope it has a positive effect.

I bet it was PMA and NOT unadulterated MDMA

I'd bet a good amount of money on that being the case!

From another article "His reaction to the drug had sent his temperature soaring to 42C – and then caused him to have a heart attack."

From various media sources:

"A post-mortem examination has failed to establish what caused the death of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, the Croydon schoolboy who died on Monday after taking ecstasy. Police are awaiting the results of further tests after the examination at Uxbridge mortuary yesterday proved inconclusive."
