Hi,
Doctor has prescribed me the following Ritalin: Ritalin (methylphenidate hydrochloride ) 10mg by Novartis 15 Tablets / Strip.

It says that it expires in 3 months but based on some search i did they usually last for at least a year. Why this one expires so fast?
I would like to ask you on weather i can use it after this is expired or not.
The reason is that i am not going to use all this medication immediately and i am going to save some for later use.

Thank you in advance.

You can use it after its expired. As long as you store it away from extreme heat and cold and moisture, it will retain its potency for years.

This.

The reason to put such short expiration dates on things like stims, benzos and opiates is an attempt to reduce stockpiling/finding "old" stashes of abuseable drugs, expecting the user to go nah they are expired we can't use them.

Fuck planned obsolescence, take them! Only insulin and food really expires assuming normal cool&dry conditions.

^This.^

I was prescribed it and I would take it only before and during school, and I know I took the medication long after it had expired since I never took it on weekends or during breaks when school was not in session like during holidays or the summer, and the medication was still just as effective.

I have one more question regarding the guidelines they give for the dosage of ritalin 10mg. Take a look at the following:

*For adults, the usual dose is 20 to 30 mg (2-3 tablets) each day but some people may need more or less than that. The maximum dose is 60 mg (6 tablets) each day.*

Does that mean 1 tablet of 10mg 2-3/up to 6 times a day, or can someone take 2 tablets at once 3 times a day for ex. given that you need 60mg?
I appreciate your help.

You could do either it doesn't matter but if you dose too late you will lose sleep so take most in the morning. Also keep in mind that the average person could take many times this amount without it being dangerous.

When it comes to determining whether or not you should take an expired drug, ask yourself "what's the worst case scenario if it doesn't work?" Im going to use sunscreen as an example as something you probably shouldn't use after its expired, because who wants skin cancer? Other than sunscreen and dxm i can't think of many other medications that actually decay after their expiration date. Worst case scenario an expired drug becomes inactive and no longer works properly, it doesn't turn into poison. Most often the reason drugs have expiration dates is because they haven't been tested after being around for considerable lengths of time. Hope this helps.
