A Taste of Tea
this movie is good stuff. its runtime is pretty long, and it takes full advantage. their world is so nice. no reason not to take time in it. the really cheap special effects are there on occasion, but it almost goes with the weird aesthetic -- like House, only not campy. i teared up for a second when the little girl finds the flip book made for her. that's one of the movie's better scenes. one of the best sequences is the go game, resulting walk, and revised reprise. great characters. my least favorite was the the uncle, ayano. his off putting, slightly above it personality might be intentional, but it's not enjoyable. the father's lack of presented depth had me confused at first. his character is is just dealt with differently; he's more difficult to see and that's cool. the little girl is of course my favorite. everything about her. how she's always sleeping, almost nodding outside on the hard surface of whatever that japanese version of a deck is called. how she's selective and silent in her attachments. so introverted and determined in her actions, yet elaborate in her thought. plus she's' a little girl with big eyes, pigtails, and cute outfits. pink chopsticks. even though the film is one of those that focuses on the structure of several main characters, i doubt many would question that she's the little star. best movie i've seen in a while.
Road, Movie
this might be the first indian movie i've seen. it's awesome. reminds me of a wes anderson film. nailed a lot of what i look for in a movie. it's really nice. and pretty goofy. had a bit of that silly feel that often keeps me away from netflix's array of independent-y foreign cinema. it is not excessive and works well. fun without being stupid. the girls who wander for water are so beautiful in those bright colors. whatever about the end. it is along the lines of how [spoil]Lost in Translation[/spoil] wraps up, but does not work as well for several reasons.
definitely wanna see another dev benegal movie. but he doesn't have many, and doesn't make them too frequently. i will soon find out if netflix has the other two on dvd.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
this is entertaining, but does not delve as deep as i'd have liked. too much of a manipulated gleam, where there is clearly more. the absence of women in the film and only skirting on the subject when talking about heritage says something in itself, but not enough. that's one of many areas that felt thin or missing. like the film crew lost a lot in trying to identify, develop, and maintain their angle.
Robot & Frank
i saw this too long ago and have drank too much since to comment intelligently. the movie is fine. something to watch with your family. on the surface it's a plastic examination of trodden, complex question. that said, it leaves room to be projected onto. intentionally or not. almost has to given, given the subject.
The Giant Mechanical Man
terrible movie. about battling against disconnect in the 21st century. so many better examples. this movie adds nothing.
