Harm Reduction How much Acetaminophen/Paracetamol is too much?

First off, I am rather new to this website and do not know what prefix to put this under, so I just picked misc.


Anyways, a person weighs 215 lbs and this other person weighs 150. How much Acetaminophen could either of these people consume in one sitting without needing immediate medical attention.


I would understand your concern, I am aware of the damage it can and will do to a persons liver, though would highly appreciate not getting a lecture as a response. Thanks

It really varies from person to person. A 200lb individual may survive 7 grams while another will die from 7 grams
 
So if I, hypothetically, weighed 215 lbs and consumed 1300 mg with a moderate history of drinking (smashing one to two twelve packs of beer a week), would my liver be fine and not need immediate attention?

Btw thanks for the intimidate response, i used to go threw Ask.com and they always took for ever and and never gave good answers.

The max was changed in 2011 or 12 to 3 grams because there were sufficient case reports of hepatotoxicity in patients taking less than 4 grams. I would also lay off the booze as this makes it even lower.
 
Thank you, if not for that i could have easily gone over and had some serious issues, though honestly i will probibly get closer to the limit then I should. Could have been allot worse though. Probably will start laying off the booze too, already violated probation once and am hoping to get off next month. Thanks for the info and advice.

One more quick question, does DXM stay in your system and for how long? just curios, im assuming you relized what i was planning anyways
 
I think Erowid says DXM possibly could give false positives for PCP but is unsubstantiated. Regular screens wouldnt test for it.
 
I think the 3/4 grams is for daily use, one time only it's higher, 10g I think. Not that I'd recommend going close to either.
If you're going to anyway, take lots of N-acetylcysteine, it counters it's toxicity*.


*paracetamol is basically metabolized by two pathways, first is safe but becomes saturated with high doses. The second one (via P450) produces a toxic metabolite that is neutralized by glutathione. As your livers glutathione is depleted shit hits the fan. N-acetylcysteine replenishes liver glutathione.
 
a gram every 4-6 (usually 975) but honestly i know people and myself thats taken way more.. like dude said up top its really just your body and how hydrated you are. the better hydrated you are the better it will be cleansed out.
 
I seriously doubt that exceedign even 4000mg once would cause a need for rescue personnel to be called, unless it was mixed with other drugs. Im not saying this is safe by any means, but I know of one individual who consumed 45,000mg of tylenol over a 2 day period (he ate 90 5/500 vicodin) and needed no medical help.

Personally, I think any acetaminophen is too much, unless you are running a fever. The shit is worthless except as a fever reducer. I avoid all formulations that contain acetaminophen. There is a definite toxicity to it tho - down a bottle of tylenol and your liver will probably fail. It's a pretty horrible slow death.

eta: keep in mind most opiates mixed with tylenol are on the weak end of the spectrum - chances are very likely you'll reach max recommended amounts of tylenol LONG before you get a buzz from whatever it is you plan on taking. Percoset 10/325 are probably the strongest for the amount of tylenol they have - you could eat a dozen and still be safe on the tylenol side, tho 120mg of oxy could very well kill a non -tolerant person, esoecialy if mixed with alcohol and or benzos.

if you are taking dxm why not buy a dxm only product?
if you are taking codeine or other opiate why not make a cold water extraction?
like some one said why take any paracetamol at all ?
 
The only reason I dont take just straight up Dxm is because i already got four bottles of cough medicine containing 650 mg Acetaminophan, 30 mg Dxm, and 12.5 Doxylamine. Of course i do not plan on drinking all four at once but i do want to take a large quantity at once and want to do it safe enough, and i plan on doing it with a buddy who is also going to do some, but he only want to take enough to get high. I just want to trip hard. I have only tripped on it once on accident but I have tripped on Diphenhydramine (I know, not very many people like it but it is one of my personal favorits, love the feeling it gives me) many, many times.

Anyways, how many bottles in one sitting could I consume without needing immediate medical attention?

This is Nyquil yes? Each 30ml contains those amounts of ingredients if so. Lets say you want 240mg of DXM, you would need 8 oz (240ml) of product. This also equates to 5.2 grams of acetaminophen. Not safe. As others said you may be safe, as toxicty usually occurs in the 7 to 12 gram range, but with the alcohol you say you've consumed recently and not knowing your history/genetics and a million other things you could be dangerously close to hurting yourself (if not there already)
 
Thank you again for this new information, very well needed. Me and my buddy are going to be doing this tomorrow night, I will let you know how it goes.

Btw it isnt nyquil, but it basically is. It has the exact same formula as Nyquil, its just some brand of cough medicine i found at a gas station. I plan on doing just one bottle and taking to gel capsules of actual nyguil night formula, im judging that my liver will be able to handle this based off of that i havent drank in two weeks nor done any drugs.

For full info on my drinking history i will tell you this. When I drink, I go on binges that last usually around three weeks to four, and usually consume one to two six packs a week. I go on these binges probably every other month. During the summer for about the whole summer I consumed at least a fifth of hard liquor and a forty of old english every day.

This is my plan, I would like your thoughts on this, though im guessing you will tell me I have a bad liver.
 
If you aren't too old I would think your liver is most likely ok. I know you said you are going to do it with what you have because it is there, but can you not run to a pharmacy and get the liquidgel caps? Each bottle has 300mg of DXM per as opposed to the 240 in the 8 ounces of the generic nyquil you have. (If it is the 12 ounce bottle please do not take the whole thing.) The capsule cost like 8 bucks.

This is true. There were alarming amounts of cases of hepatoxicity in emergency rooms which led to the lowering of the max dose down to 3000mg a day from the previous maximum dose of 4000mg a day.

It's better to play it safe, and even though some people may be fine to take higher than recommended doses in the short run others aren't, and I personally know someone who didn't know the recommended max dosage and since his headache didn't go away he kept taking more and more and ended up in the hospital with horrible pains in his side that was a result of hepatoxicity which he needed to be treated for.

You can easily go out and buy products with just DXM in them. Just because you have other products lying around doesn't mean you need to consume them. If you don't want them to go to complete waste you can always take mostly the DXM product and then take the other DXM product to get you to the total dosage you want to achieve.
