In a lot of discussions people seem to assume that masturbating implies consuming pornography: you only masturbate while watching porn, or a statement will be put like this: "[a person] doesn't want their partner to masturbate, because the idea of their partner watching porn makes them uncomfortable". If the assumption is loosened at all, it's like this: men masturbate while viewing porn.

I don't really get this. I look at porn, probably, less than one in five times when I jerk off. I occasionally go for more than a week without porn, not by whit of avoiding it, but simply because I don't feel like it, even if I'm getting myself off every day.

Is anyone else like this? It seems to be a social expectation, one I'm clearly not close to meeting, but which doesn't really carry any benefits.

[obligatory personal info: I'm a guy, and in a stable, happy relationship with a girl who unfortunately lives in a different city, so I'm alone pretty often]

I´m sure that a lot of people is like this too, I´m somewhere in between my self.
I do watch porn but not everytime I masturbate at all and lately I must say that I have been feeling kind of bored with watching porn in general.
Funny story actually - I often, and lately very often, find my self in a situation where I get horny and start watching porn only to find my self unsatisfied with it and ending up jerking off to some pictures of my girlfriend and/or using my imagination to rewind stuff that we did in the past. Afterwards I´m all like, "why the fuck did I watch porn to begin with?"

I´m actually considering quitting porn for a few months to see if it gets interesting again and I also believe that porn ain´t good for the mind, partially due to over-stimulation of the dopamine receptors (might only happen with severe porn addiction, I´m not really an expert on the subject) but I find it rather logical that it can´t be good. I mean, our minds have not had the time to evolve/adjust to this highly stimulating stuff. Before porn, most men would only get to see a relatively low amount of naked chicks in their life. Suddenly, in a matter of a few years, it is now possible for anyone with a computer + internet connection to watch thousands upon thousands of naked chicks, getting fucked in the most extreme ways imaginable. Something is telling me that this just can´t be good but this is only conjecture on my part.

well porn is lazy and it makes you fantasize about being in a new situation.

recently i was in the shower and i was like- fuck it, so i thought about all the dirtiest sex i have had and it was a big ego boost to relive 20 different sexual experiences in two minutes. kind of cleansing for the brain

I mean a lot of porn is two or more people having sex. Watching is alone and masturbating seems much more lazy than the porn itself, wouldn't you agree?
Fantasizing about the past is lazier than fantasizing about something you haven't experienced, too (imo)
 
because you dont have use your brain. you just go- "oh there's two dudes stuffing each other, wooo i've jizzed. job done"

Yeah, I was just thinking about this the other day actually, and I completely agree with you, I have no idea why people always make that assumption. I'm a straight female in a happy and stable relationship and I only ever masturbate without porn...that goes for when I was single as well, in fact I probably haven't watched porn in about two years frankly, because I simply don't need it.
I've always wondered if I was an exception as most of my friends do seem to use porn. I'd really be interested to know what the ratio is, I'll make a poll :)

porn makes you feel like you're missing out cos other people are getting sum and your just watching. remembering stuff reminds you of all the good sex you have had for real. makes you feel much better but for that 5th wank of the day you're gonna need porn...
 
Most of the time I masturbate without porn, but not without a visual aid. It is often suggestive erotic material but not qualified as porn.
 
Just can't be bothered without porn tbh. My tabs loaded with hundreds of images, so all I need to do is pick the thing up. Saying that, I'm kinda spoilt for choice though; too many images and vids to really get into one, cause I know there's an even sexier one next to it. The stuff that turns me on most is 3d CGI animated porn, some of it pretty extreme.

Yeah, some of that vintage porn is way better than the low-quality shit they're churning out now. 70's porn was the "golden age"- the actors actually had some acting talent, and it wasn't as fake IMO- I don't think the sex is overdone tbh, it's just too fake, the "orgasms" are too blatantly faked.
 
Even when using porn I still often develop fantasies and stop watching the actual porn or am not so focused on it, maybe just he audio from it. I do however fall into the category of occasionally not using, I guess I find it invigorates the mind, it really ruins your imagination.
 
I think the issue with extensive use of pornography is that it warps your brain to judge sexual experiences simply by the physical characteristics of who you are attracted to, but part of a sexual experience is being in the moment with someone else and feeling the intimacy of that situation.
