Dolphins ‘deliberately get high’ on puffer fish nerve toxins by carefully chewing and passing them around

Dolphins are thought of as one of the most intelligent species in the animal kingdom – and experts believe they have put their ingenuity to use in the pursuit of getting “high”.

In extraordinary scenes filmed for a new documentary, young dolphins were seen carefully manipulating a certain kind of puffer fish which, if provoked, releases a nerve toxin.

Though large doses of the toxin can be deadly, in small amounts it is known to produce a narcotic effect, and the dolphins appeared to have worked out how to make the fish release just the right amount.

Carefully chewing on the puffer and passing it between one another, the marine mammals then enter what seems to be a trance-like state.

The behaviour was captured on camera by the makers of Dolphins: Spy in the Pod, a series produced for BBC One by the award-winning wildlife documentary producer John Downer.

Rob Pilley, a zoologist who also worked as a producer on the series, told the Sunday Times: “This was a case of young dolphins purposely experimenting with something we know to be intoxicating.

“After chewing the puffer gently and passing it round, they began acting most peculiarly, hanging around with their noses at the surface as if fascinated by their own reflection.

“It reminded us of that craze a few years ago when people started licking toads to get a buzz, especially the way they hung there in a daze afterwards. It was the most extraordinary thing to see.”

I don't mind if they're getting high; I just don't want them swimming while high.

This actually happened?
 
Dried toad skin of a specific species is meant to be smoked so that the heat destroys the poison and the psychedelic remains. It was 5meo-DMT or something. I'd like to know what positive psychoactive effects tetrodotoxin has though, people always spew the negatives but it's like the only legal way to get buzzed in Japan without booze or smokes.
 
I love sushi, would love to try fugu even though the risk and its crazy expensive. Ive heard when its prepared just right it makes your lips and mouth tingle kinda go numb.
 
dolphins have also developed a language, intelligent creatures definitely.
 
Other animal species also use drugs.
People, and animals, simply use drugs. End of story.
Making drugs illegal has got to be one of the stupidest things people have done in centuries.

I have had fugu several times. It was good, but didn't make my mouth go numb or tingle, so maybe not poisonous enough?
I have also had it dried. Not bad, either.

My dad got me a GoPro camera for christmas, and showed me a video this guy recorded while fishing. He would drag the camera in a tube behind his boat to see if there were fish in the area - and ended up capturing a group of dolphins swimming behind the camera almost purposefully switching back and forth taking turns on film. Really amazing video, ill see if I can find it and post.

Dolphins are amazing.

to be fair you can eat any food you want off a willing naked chick it doesn't have to specifically be sushi... for instance i might allow you to eat fried chicken or carrot off my naked body should you take me on at least 3 lovely dates first

carrot is just not sexy.
Fried chicken is a bit better.
But creme sauces, or peanut butter, seem like they would be much more enjoyable to me :)
