Colorado resorts brace for marijuana tourism

"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Colorado's ski resorts and mountain towns are bracing for an influx of tourists seeking a now-legal Rocky Mountain high.

Last year, the state legalized the possession and use of small amounts of recreational marijuana, and on Jan. 1 special stores will be allowed to sell pot to anyone 21 and over. Voters had previously approved a medical marijuana system, but last fall's vote threw the doors wide open by requiring state officials to regulate pot like alcohol.

With several companies offering marijuana tours — sightseeing tours of the state's high country, with marijuana supplied — police and ski area operators worry that tourists who don't understand the rules will be sparking up on the slopes.

"We're delving into truly uncharted territory here," said Summit County Sheriff John Minor, whose jurisdiction covers the Arapahoe Basin, Keystone and Breckenridge ski areas. "We do have this misperception in Summit County where people have smoked in public, been charged, and were under the perception that it's a free-for-all."

Under the law, marijuana may be smoked by adults but only in private. But exactly what "private" means is still the subject of debate. Minor says a private vehicle on a public road, for example, is considered "in public."

Marijuana tour operator Timothy Vee of Colorado High Life Tours says to get around those rules, his drivers sometimes pull into a parking lot, allowing tour guests to partake of the pot he offers. Under current law, it's legal to give another adult marijuana as long as there's no direct payment for it. Vee and other operators charge people to rent the limo and driver and say the pot, snacks and soda are free.

For $1,200 a day, tourists can rent a chauffeured minibus from Vee to pick them up at their hotel and drive them to the slopes while they use marijuana during the ride. Vee said concerns about impaired skiers and riders are overblown. After all, he says, every ski area has a bar at the bottom of the slope. And for decades, skiers and snowboarders in Colorado have been ducking into the trees for a mid-run toke. Many ski areas are home to illicitly built "smoke shacks" tucked between the slopes, and locals often refer to gondola ski lifts as "ganja-las."

Yeah I was waiting for somebody to capitalize on this... :\
Ha, why the face? People will capitalize on anything even slightly profitable even if its the sort of thing that really isn't best to expolit. Besides people go to Cali/etc. for wine tasting and such. Personally I wouldn't go on vacation somewhere simply for legal MJ, but it would be pretty cool to go to a nice ski resort and be able to pick up some headies/hash to bring back to the hotel after hitting up the slopes all day! Though if I lived in a big city of a MJ legal state i'd probably make that face as well....!

People have been going to Amsterdam for cannabis holidays for along time and Cannabis isn't even legal there.

All good for Colorado I rekon, good on them. This is what we need more and more of all over the world now.

Pretty annoying.

My problem with it is that it will result in tightening of the now currently liberal state regulation of legal cannabis.

Denver already has passed specific legislation tightening the sale, possession, and usage of cannabis in Denver County, Douglas County opted out of legal marijuana altogether, and Summit County is contemplating additional regulations on marijuana and has been since the law passed for the very reason in this thread - marijuana tourism and people not knowing what they can and can not do with marijuana in Colorado.

Under the law, you can not use it in any public venue (this includes private clubs - there won't ever be any cannabis cafes like they have in Amsterdam), a public or private vehicle (this includes public transportation and the use of edibles, and I believe national parks as well.

Denver has restricted it further to include all city and county parks and even tried (but luckily failed) to regulate it so that you couldn't even smoke it on your own property if it was able to be viewed by someone not on your property.

There are a lot of other hidden restrictions I'm sure.

You can not even grow your own marijuana legally in Douglas County. You can possess it and use it yourself but they opted out of cultivation and sale. I imagine that the free exchange of up to one ounce between individuals 21 or over is probably illegal there as well.

There's another problem too. You can't sell marijuana anywhere in the state unless you were already a licensed medical marijuana dispensary and you applied for and were approved for a retail marijuana license. Basically, if you grow your own weed, you can only give it away and can not receive any monetary compensation for it.

How long do you all think it will be before the loopholes in the law that they are using are closed? All they really need to do in order to shut this down is ban open containers like they do alcohol, forcing all marijuana to be stored in the trunk.

Yes. The servers are overloaded. It seems to happen during peak times. There's a thread about it in the support forum.

Thanks, I should probably go and have a whinge there.

And the word gaper just took on a whole new deeper meaning..

1. gaper
A gaper is a skier or snowboarder who is completely clueless. Usually distinguished by their bright colored clothes and a gaper gap, the gap between goggles and a helmet/hat. Gapers also do the "Gaper Tuck" which is an attempt at being a ski racer by tucking, however, it is done incorrectly with the poles sticking straight up like thunderbolts and lighting, very very frightening! Gapers also sit at the bottom of jumps and try and go big off table tops in the park.
1. My eyes are burning from that gapers bright colored clothes.
2. I fell off the chair laughing at that gaper tuck.
3. Did you just see that gaper getting landed on because he was sitting like a dumbass at the landing of a jump.

NEW addition.. Did you see that gaper try and talk after that three gram fire at "million dollar hide away".. sure did.. couldn't even find his board let alone put it on.. finally just said fuck it and rolled down the hill.. we finally caught up with him by following a trail of rented ski equipment and Doritos. Poor basted was green in more ways than one.. but he was grinning for sure =D

Wait a second... How is he getting away with this? Even in a parking lot, its still illegal to smoke in a vehicle.

Nice points I hadn't really thought of, especially individual counties being able to enforce their own regulations, though it makes sense. I had only really thought of it from the view of a bunch of out of towners cramming the streets/etc and being annoying. Still better than living in a state that barely ever even votes on medical MJ though..oh well at least it's extremely decriminalized though!;)

Mang what an idiot! Way to paint a target on your back! I would hazard a guess he simply hasn't been spotted doing that yet, lucky for him!

Most hotels are non smoking too, where are the pot tourists going to go? Anyway you guys can have our ski slope mountie (must be best job ever) they won't admit his sole purpose is busting stoners on slope, at least in CO they can admit their true purpose.

I would love to go snowboarding and smoke some of americas finest.

Hopefully if this is enough of a boost to the econmy we will see more states follow the lead.

Just thinking about all those times I snuck away from an event with a small group of people to smoke a joint, and then we snuck back in without anyone noticing. Most pot smokers have learned the art of the stealth. The restrictions suck but it's not going to stop people. Law or no law, I've smoked pot for years in "prohibited" places. Nothing's going to stop me.

What the authorities aren't understanding is that drugs will happen anywhere and everywhere, regardless of their wishes. I'm glad people won't go to jail for it in CO though.

I feel bad for anyone can't score pot. Fuckin amateurs.

Also, to hell with going skiing stoned, I've been doing it since I was five and no way would I go in any way altered!

I was pretty much going to say this. It is pretty hard getting busted having a smoke if you are careful. Hell we are talking about huge mountain parks here, I doubt anyone would be aware someone just had a toke. You are more likely getting busted by police searching you, which hopefully these new laws will prevent.

They won't. Probably cause is probable cause. As long as they can justify it in court, its going to happen.

Colorado has been extremely lax on pot in some places for a long time though. I remember walking on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder smoking a cigarette and an officer telling me to put it out and then watching him greet a guy smoking a joint as he walked off... this was back in like 2008 too!
