The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved the first drug treatment for Peyronie's disease, a condition that results in severe and sometimes painful curvature of the penis, officials said.

The action marks a new use for the drug Xiaflex, which is already used to treat Dupuytren's contracture, a disease of the hand that impairs a person's ability to straighten their fingers.

Xiaflex is a bacterial enzyme -- collagenase clostridium histolyticum -- that is believed to reduce the build-up of collagen, the structural protein that makes up scar tissue.

Peyronie's disease is the result of scar tissue forming beneath the skin of the penis and causing it to deform and bend 30 degrees or more during an erection. The condition can cause a painful erection in some men and prevent intercourse, according to doctors.

According to a statement from the drug's maker, Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Chesterbrook, Pa., between 65,000 and 120,000 men are diagnosed with Peyronie's disease each year.

"Today's approval expands the available treatment options for men experiencing Peyronie's disease, and enables them, in consultation with their doctor, to choose the most appropriate treatment option," said Dr. Audrey Gassman, deputy director of the FDA's Division of Bone, Reproductive and Urological Products.

Treatment with Xiaflex involves two injections of the drug into the penile scar tissue and a penile "modeling" procedure that involves manipulation of the penis by a healthcare provider.

I was in rehab many many years back with some crazy black dude that always used to talk about his "hook dick" lol....good news for him! If hes still alive that is.

I don't get it, where's this scar tissue coming from?

Are we talking on the skin itself or deeper in the blood vessels that make the boner hard (sorry don't know the real word for em)

Is this something your born with? Or that naturally happens from years of erections and abuse on a penis?

I'm kinda worried if its the latter... :?

It is actually scar tissue in the tunica albuginea, you are thinking of the corpora cavernosa. Some people are probably more predisposed to forming scar tissue than others, look at the wide variability in wound healing. I bet the conditions correlates a lot with forming keloids, just a guess.

Peyronie's disease is something you are born with, not something that results from circumcision, excessive masturbation, etc.

I wonder if this drug can be used in treatment with people that suffer from lederhosen(sp?) disease. It is very similar to the hand issue, but in the feet. Some of my problems are with my feet. Plantar fasciitus in both feet with 12 - 15 fibromas in each foot. The fibromas vary is size from the size of a pencil eraser to the size of a nickel, and they are spread out across each foot from the heel to the ball of the foot. About 6 - 9 years ago a pain mgmt. doctor I was seeing had me use some new cream that was part of a drug trial that was to inhibit collagen creation/formation, but after two separate 10 week intervals nothing changed. Going to look into this one a bit further.

There's probably a genetic component to it, like with everything, but it also definitely does happen in response to trauma to the penis. Circumcision wouldn't do it but masturbation or sex could. A quick Google search will confirm this.

As a guy, I really think it should be intuitive how it happens...
